Actors Courtly Matters

BollyCurry brings to you some Bollywood actors and actresses and the court cases they are currently involved in.

While Bollywood stars may seem untouchable in most cases, even they are not above the law. Just like numerous other human beings, some of them have also had run-ins with the law! Today BollyCurry brings to you some of these Bollywood actors and actresses and the cases they are involved in, in no particular order.

When we're talking about court cases against actors, one actor that comes into mind is King Khan himself, who recently got into trouble after appearing to act in a drunken manner with IPL security guards during the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Shah Rukh Khan claimed that he may have overreacted, but only because his children were manhandled. However, he was found guilty and was banned from entering the MCA Stadium for 5 years. Just goes to show that sometimes it doesn't matter how big of a star you are, you just cannot get away with some things.

A recent case that has managed to shock everyone was the sentencing of Sanjay Dutt in relation to the 1993 attacks in Mumbai, which were said to have been planned and executed by Dawood Ibrahim. While many people felt that Dutt had faced his punishment already in the 20 long years awaiting a verdict, the judge thought otherwise and sentenced him under the TADA act to 5 years in prison. He had already spent 18 months in prison while awaiting the judgment, but now will spend the remaining time in prison. That does prove the statement wrong that justice delayed is justice denied, because in this case justice might have been delayed a few decades, but it was definitely served, and that too with a vengeance!

Who said that love doesn't punish you? This next case is bound to prove that wrong. The story about Monica Bedi and Abu Salem is known by one and all. When both fell in love, they decided to get away, but were eventually caught with forged documents while trying to enter Portugal. This began a long series of imprisonments for both. Until 2005, both were imprisoned in Portugal and then they were deported to India to be sentenced for their criminal involvements in the bomb blast case of 1993. Because she had already undergone a long punishment in Portugal, the Supreme Court reduced her sentence and now she is out of jail and back in the field of acting.

What follows now is a group of actors who were working together in Hum Saath-Saath Hain and were found guilty of killing two black bucks in 1998. The first of these is Neelam Kothari. While shooting for Hum Saath Saath Hain, Neelam and her co-workers decided to roam the city of Jodhpur and it was during this time that they hunted two black bucks and killed them. Given that black bucks are an endangered species, charges were filed against her and she escaped by not appearing before the jury.

Another actress also charged like Kothari was Sonali Bendre. Bendre played Salman Khan's love interest in the movie and she too joined her co-stars when they went out to view the sights of Jodhpur. Then she joined them when they decided to hunt the black bucks. When it came time to be charged she didn't appear before the jury and thus was let off.

The third actress on this list was Tabu. However, unlike Bendre and Kothari, Tabu not only accepted the charges, but also appeared before the jury. Thus she was unable to avoid getting charged and was booked under the charges 9/51 and 9/52 of the Wildlife Preservation Act and 149 of IPC. In December 2012, the Jodhpur court summoned her to begin the trial of the revised charges on 4th February 2013.

Next up is Saif Ali Khan, the first actor to be charged in the black buck poaching case. But unfortunately, that is just the start of his run-ins with the law. Saif has often been in the news due to his short-tempered nature. Not only was he charged for the black buck poaching case, but he was also found guilty for assaulting a NRI businessman at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai at one point. Saif was acquitted from the black buck poaching case as he did not appear before the jury when it came time for the case.

And the final person on our list is the bad boy of Bollywood, Salman Khan. Along with being the main perpetrator of the Jodhpur poaching case, he has also been charged with first degree murder of a 28-year-old man and the assault of many others when he drove his car onto a footpath outside a bakery on 28th September 2002. On April 10th, 2006, Salman was arrested and given a 5 year jail term for hunting black bucks, but was granted bail on 13th April and left the Jodhpur Jail. At the moment, Salman awaits judgment on both the cases against him.

As one can see from the Dutt trial, when a big actor goes to jail it affects many people: fans, producers, directors, other actors, and definitely the family. However as is proven time and time again, justice is above everyone. So while these actors await their judgments on their case, this writer is off to find a new topic to write about.
