2013 Flashback: Best & Worst Couples

Here are BollyCurry's top five yay and nay couples of 2013.

They say "every coin has two sides". Similarly, our very own Bollywood industry has it's own two sides; good and bad movies. Sometimes it's the story that sets the cash registers ringing but more often then not, it's the lead couples that make a break a movie. They either make our hearts melt or give us headaches with their non-existent chemistry. In no specific order, here are BollyCurry's top five yay and nay couples of 2013.

Aditya Roy Kapoor - Shraddha Kapoor
Aashiqui 2 needs no introduction. The movie, which has already bagged the most romantic tale of the year - and created sparks with the chemistry of the lead actors - surely deserves the top spot in any list. The film has made Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor household names globally. Whether it's the "Tum Hi Ho" track or "Chahun Main Ya Na", their sizzling hot chemistry cannot be missed. Both fresh faces have proven their worth in just one movie together and with this immense talent, they surely have a long way to go with Bollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan - Deepika Padukone
When SRK and Deeps were paired together for Chennai Express, people's excitement for the movie catapulted. The audience expected the duo to recreate the magic of Om Shanti Om. However, they created history instead with the film resulting in being the highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time. King Khan is known for his romantic avatars, but this time he took it up a notch and Padukone spectacularly matched his every step. The critics shredded the action rom-com to no ends, but the movie survived and the duo of Khan and Padukone did wonders on the audience, thus breaking several records and settling itself of top.

Ranveer Singh - Deepika Padukone
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaption of Shakespeare's tragic tale, Romeo and Juliet. The movie is a typical SLB  production; everything is at a grand scale including the set, the costumes, the strong plot and even the acting from leads to junior artists. The film met people's expectations head on and SLB left no stone unturned in making this his comeback movie. With their electrifying chemistry and intensely cozy acting, Padukone and Singh set the screen on fire, thus making it the latest super hit movie of the year. The film also marked Padukone's blockbuster hat-trick with appreciation from almost every film critic across the globe.

Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, starring ex-flames Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, was a much-anticipated movie, leaving the critics and the audience with their eyes wide open, especially on the leads. And they did not disappoint. The film lived up to everyone's expectations in every aspect when it came to compatibility. The couple had already shown their magic on-screen with Bachna Ae Haseeno, but they took YJHD to a completely new level of love in the 21st century. The duo sizzled on-screen with their fun-loving acting and scorching chemistry. The audience loved the movie from the beginning credits to the end, with the critics agreeing with the major consensus to some point, thus making Kapoor and Padukone among the most desired and loved on-screen couples of 2013.

Dhanush - Sonam Kapoor
Raanjhaana was a movie full of surprises. The unusual couple of the fashionista Sonam Kapoor and southern superstar Dhanush had people intrigued from the very first look. Dhanush, a Hindu character named Pandit, sets eyes on a Muslim girl named Zoya and it's love at first sight. The film tells a tale of an unusual couple who's destiny is to be together, as demonstrated in the movie when they part ways just to meet again. Raanjhaana was Dhanush's debut movie in Bollywood and his acting skills were praised by fans and critics along with Kapoor's natural and real acting. The critics gave the film a thumbs up for the unique story, the perfect execution and of course, the unusual yet interesting chemistry between the leads worked wonders for the film.

Imran Khan - Anushka Sharma
Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola was among the first movies to release in 2013. With a new year's start, expectations from this film were high, however, after rolling the end credits, many left the theaters downhearted with the majority of criticisms being directed at the lack of chemistry between Khan and Sharma. The film saw Sharma as a bubbly and happy-go-lucky girl with Khan as a rebellious villager. Have we not already seen Anushka's bubbly avatar in almost all the movies she has done? Khan, on the other hand, does not blend well with the ruffian character. Hence, the overall result of this horribly bakwaas package was negative comments from the audience and critics alike.

Preity Zinta - Rhean Malik
The beautifully captured Ishkq in Paris was declared an average at the Box office. While some state the cliched plot as the barrier to success, others claim it to be the unimpressive chemistry between the lead couple. Too young, too old? The equation of their chemistry lies somewhere in that saying and despite both actors being immensely talented, they failed to portray a real love-like feeling for their fans. The film was also Zinta's comeback movie to Bollywood and she undoubtedly looked gorgeous in all her outfits, but failed to bring the spark that she once used to possess.

Imran Khan - Sonakshi Sinha
After the major success of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, expectations from the sequel doubled. Moreover, with a fresh cast, the excitement raised the bar just that much higher. Unfortunately, the film disappointed the audience terribly and was subsequently announced a flop. One of the many reasons behind this declaration was the casting; the love triangle between Imran Khan-Sonakshi Sinha-Akshay Kumar had nothing new to offer. The lack of chemistry makes you cringe and you barely survive throughout the film without nodding off at least once. Despite the success of Rawdy Rathore, starring Kumar and Sinha in lead roles, this particular flick failed due to the upper hand given to Khan and Sinha's pairing, which more or less equaled to a visual horror for the poor eyes.

Ajay Devgn - Tamnna Bhatia
After Southern star Dhanush's promising debut in Bollywood, Himmatwala had it all to make it big: Southern beauty Tamannah and one of the finest actors of B-Town, Ajay Devgn. The film looked promising but unfortunately, it ended up a huge disappointment not only at the Box Office but with the fans of both actors as well. The flick received majorly negative reviews from every corner and trap of the world and the chemistry of a mature-looking man with a rather younger looking woman was rejected by the audience with great passion. In the end, it all failed to create the desired magic on-screen.

Sunny Deol - Kristina Aheerav
Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 - another sequel and another disappointment. With ribs still ticking from the first film, the second installment of the Deol family film did not live up to expectation. With no fun element, no chemistry between the family itself and no witty dialogues for a comedy film, critics abused the film highly. The pair of Sunny Deol and Kristina Aheerav looked odd and cold in the film, grounding the romantic factor and chemistry at level zero. Although the film was declared a hit by critic's ratings, fans and the general audience crashed their reviews and declared their huge dislike towards the pairing of Deol and Aheerav. It was indeed something that one would rather forget and flush out of their memories.

The year is still not over and we have had recent on-screen couples who have sizzled, and some that fizzled: Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha in R..Rajkumar, Saif Ali Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in Bullet Raja and of course the much awaited couple, Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif in Dhoom 3. Concluding with the late entries, leave us a comment and let us know who made you drool and who looked like a fool. Until then, BollyCurry wishes you a happy holiday, merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Here's hoping 2014 to be couple-ful!

Note: The above list is our personal compilation and not a direct hit intended at any of the actors mentioned.
