DJ Bolli Speaks: The Hindi Serial Song Sequence Edition

There is a limit to the number of song sequences one can handle and a limit to the number of times you can hear the same song on every show.

Every serial goes through a phase where the lead couple, or even the side couple, have moments - and then, dishum, dishum, zoom in, slow-motion close up at various camera angles and - song sequence!

Har serial mein hota hai yaar, kya karein, hume chutkara hi nahin milta.

DJ Bolli, that's DJ B for you, meaning me, loves music. Obviously. I am a DJ after all. But there is a limit to the number of song sequences one can handle and a limit to the number of times you can hear the same song on every show. And I mean every show. Sometimes things go beyond control and you begin to get irked by the very song that you once direly loved.

Recently the fad has been Aashiqui 2's, "Tum Hi Ho". I will admit, I love the song. I am sure everybody loves the song. It is slow, romantic and the lyrics are passionate. It is a joy to listen to where everyone can sing along because it is simple as well. Until, of course, you hear it every time you turn on the radio. But when you switch the radio off to watch some television - it is playing there too! From Zee TV to Sony to every Star channel ever - from Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke (Roopal Tyagi and Ankit Gera) to Pavitra Rishta (Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Negi) to Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai (Krystle Dsouza and Karan Tacker; Kushal Tandon and Nia Sharma), har taraf dekho toh "Tum Hi Ho". Arre, hadd ho gayi yaar! There is only so much anyone can take.

On one hand the overplayed romantic song. On the other? The overused dance number.

Just how many times has "Teri Meri" from Bodyguard been used in a serial? Be it a dream dance sequence or an actual dance sequence in front of a stunned audience, the song has been used at least once on every channel. Arnav (Barun Sobti) and Khushi (Sanaya Irani) might have looked really good during Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon's sangeet episodes, and the song might have fit RK (Vivian Dsena) and Madhubala's (Drashti Dhami) situation in Madhubala, as well as in Parichay (Sameer Soni and Keerti Nagpure) and even Qubool Hai (Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti)! Yeh kahaani toh mushkil hogi hi, na? DJ B is not at all a fan of overused songs, and I am sure that you aren't either!

There are so many Bollywood songs to choose from. Why do these serials always go for the same ones, over and over? Someone needs to write a list of songs that they are not allowed to use. Ever again. I volunteer myself if necessary. Only 'cause DJ B is the best. Best at everything. Oh yes, I am.

So which songs are you fed up of hearing when you are watching your favourite serials? Or do you not mind the same songs on every channel, with every couple? Think and give your answer as DJ B awaits to read your precious feedback on my very first edition!
