Comedy is a tough task

Sunday, January 11, 2009 19:41

Mona Singh's tried her hand at dancing, after the popular Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, and now she's doing a comedy reality
Mona Singh show.

Flattered by the response she has received from her admirers after her first performance in Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano, Mona says, "I have received loads of messages from my fans. They are all very impressed with my efforts. I'm enjoying every bit of the attention." Despite having already participated in more than a couple of reality shows, Mona admits that she had apprehensions before she gave her final nod to this offer. "People who judge reality shows are rude to the contestants. And I, as a celebrity participant, didn't want to experience that humiliation on national television. I agreed to be a part of the show only when I was assured that the show didn't have any politics," she says.

She believes comedy is not easy and even the slightest deviation from the topic can make one's act irritating rather than funny. "Comedy is a tough task. I was quite nervous about my first performance. It is pretty normal for one to get jittery. Also, there is the fear of forgetting lines. But then, as a performer, you have to overcome your fears and give your best shot at what has been assigned to you."

Did the presence of more experienced actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Gulshan Grover and Divya Dutta ever worry her? "No. But it sure made the task more challenging. I agree, I don't have decades of acting experience or exposure to stage shows, but then it is all about shedding inhibitions, combating obstacles and emerging as a winner. Before I gave my first performance in this show all I told myself was 'Just go, give it your best shot. You are here to make people laugh. There is no competition.' I'm happy it worked for me."

Sounding upbeat about the character she played in the first episode, Mona says, "I just wanted to look funny in my first show. There was no need for me to go on stage as Mona Singh. It was a conscious decision to dress up like a fat woman. I didn't want to poke fun at anybody and just wanted to make fun of myself to make others laugh."

And has she ever encountered a situation where she became the butt of other people's jokes? "It happened when we had just started shooting for the show. Most of the actors would make fun of me. They just couldn't understand why I didn't opt for a glamourous role. I remember going back home in tears."

She also talks about Harbhajan Singh, her partner on Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. She says, "He's a great buddy. I don't know why he's considered aggressive."

No item numbers for Mona Singh

MUMBAI: After setting the stage on fire and bagging two awards from dance reality shows, TV actress Mona Singh is yet to be seen shaking a leg on celluloid. The reason, she says, is the offers that come her way are way too sleazy for her.

'I have received offers for doing item numbers in films but they are vague. I can't dance around with 20 weird men while wearing revealing clothes and pouring alcohol on myself. That's just not me,' Mona said.

'I have never ever had that sort of image and I don't even think I can carry it off well,' she added.

Mona jaisi koi nahin

Mona Singh is back on yet another reality show titled Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano on Star Plus. The actress, who arguably has a good comic timing and an equally good sense of humour, is seen tickling the funny bone of viewers through gags and stand-up comedy.

Not seen in any soap after Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi , Mona is presently doing a cameo in Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch kar Dikhayengi which is produced by the same production house which produced Jassi. There is one more thing common between these two shows – In Radhaa Ki Betiyaan, Mona Singh is once again linked with Apoorva Agnihotri her Armaan Sir of Jassi…

Tellychakkar caught up with the actress on her third stint on the reality show, her upcoming flick Three Idiots and Armaan Sir.

Excerpts:

What prompted you to do Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano?

This show is different from the rest and the USP of the show is Gadhashree (the animated cartoon who passes remarks on the acts), there is no rona-dhona, no elimination and no nasty judges insulting you. I agreed to do the show because it's full of fun and is stand-up comedy. This is something that I have not tried before.

Wouldn't your fans recognise you're so popular?

We will have some make-up changes and then we set up a gag. In my first gag there was this girl who wanted to woo her boyfriend so I went as the guy's mother and asked her if she loves my boy. And we got some superb reactions from the guy. It's hard to recognise us as we put fake noses, chins and cheeks. The task is to pull off the gag.

Doesn't it sound like Champion Chaalbaaz?

Arre Deewano is different from Champion Chaalbaaz in terms of contestants. Here we have all celebrity participants and there are no judges and elimination. People will watch it as a stress-buster.

Do you get involved when the script is written?

They have a creative team and even we come up with our own ideas and suggestions. We tell them if we want to do something in particular. We sit with the creative team and work on it together. Then we work on the looks and make-up which is followed by a couple of rehearsals as one can't predict how the person on whom the prank is to be played will react.

You also appeared on Comedy circus.

Yes and I forgot all my lines.

Did you draw inspiration from the show?

No, infact I was so scared thereafter that I decided never to do comedy again because Shakeel is a fabulous comedian. We didn't do any rehearsals and he said that we will manage it on stage and I too agreed with him thinking that it was not a competition. But we goofed up on the stage as he picked up some other lines and I completely forgot mine.

Have you ever been prey to such pranks?

Oh! I have been victim to a prank on Champion Chaalbaaz. There were these artists in the disguise of cops who started interrogating me. They asked me where I was heading so late at night and asked me to show them my passport and driving license even though I wasn't driving the car. And falling prey to their prank I actually told them that I wasn't carrying one.

You have done almost everything from a serial to dancing to hosting and now stand-up comedy.

Oh! I am really lucky and I need to thank my stars for the same. I have danced and acted in Jassi and now I am learning comedy. Now, I am excitingly looking forward to my movie Three Idiots which is directed by Raju Hirani.

Would you like to tell us about Three Idiots?

My first schedule was in September 2008 in Shimla. I was obviously very nervous about sharing screen space with the likes of Kareena Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Boman Irani. I am playing Kareena's sister and we are Boman Irani's daughters. My first shot was with Boman Irani and we had rehearsed it a couple of times. When we completed the shot everybody started clapping, applauding and cheering. I was so touched with their warm gesture. My character name in the movie is Mona.

How is it getting back with DJ and Apoorva Agnihotri in Radha Ki Betiyaan?

It's a cameo as I don't want to do regular daily soaps. Five years on-screen I have been dating the same man but its great fun. We share a great on-screen chemistry, camaraderie and equation. Deeya and Tony are great friends to work with and I am enjoying playing the character. I think the cameo would run for another two months.

Under guise again?

Mona Singh tells Srabanti Chakrabarti why her new reality show 'Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano' is unique.

It seems the madness surrounding reality shows is going to continue for some more time. Every channel and production house is thinking of a new reality show to hook the viewers on. The latest to join the bandwagon is Star Plus whose new show Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano is coming on air soon.

The programme has eight celebrities including Mona 'Jassi' Singh, Mandira Bedi, Rakhi Sawant, Sweta Keswani, Divya Dutta, Mahesh Manjrekar, Yash Tonk and Gulshan Grover. However, the programme will not have any judges and have an animated character called Gadhashri instead. It will be the connecting point between the participants, audience and host. Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano premieres 2 January every Friday — Saturday at 10 pm on Star Plus.

Excerpts from the interview:

'Jhalak Dikhlaaja', 'EK Khiladi Ek Hasina' and now 'Arre Deewano'. You seem to be the uncrowned queen of reality shows on Indian television. Are you focusing on these shows? What prompted you to sign up for the new show?

I don't think I am focusing on reality shows, but I do enjoy participating in them. However, with the overdose of such shows and lack of unique concepts, I am sure the audience must have got tired of the same faces and events. However, Arre Deewano... is completely different. There is no elimination, singing or dancing, it is unbridled fun and entertainment. I think it is this unique concept that forced me to take up this role.

What is so unique about the concept?

In the show, all eight of us will don a new look and makeup and go out on the streets. We will interact with the common people and perform gags in front of them. If the common man fails to recognise us, we reveal our identities and bring him to the studio and tell him the truth. Even if he does, we bring them to the studio and have a chit chat. Gadhashree plays a very important role in this interaction. For all of us who are well known and whose voices are also famous, it will be a challenge hiding our identity.

In most shows, we have to follow a script, in this show, everything is impromptu — the gags we perform, the audience reaction, our response to their reaction etc. I feel this is the best part of this show.

In the recent past you have been seen as a guest participant (along with Shakeel) in 'Comedy Circus'. Are you planning to specialise in comedy shows?

Not at all. In fact the episode I did for Comedy Circus was close to a disaster! I forgot my dialogues and had it not been for Shakeel who improvised instantly to salvage the situation, I don't think I would have found a place to hide. So there is no way I can do stand-up comedy shows.

You are also doing a show with Deeya and Tony Singh, and Apoorva Agnihotri — 'Radha Ki Betiyaan'. How does it feel to be back with the people who gave you Jassi?

(smiles) Neither am I playing Radha, nor her betiyaan! My role started as a cameo, but due to audience reaction it got extended. It feels great to be back in a show with Deeya and Tony. And with Apoorva — I have been dating him on-screen for the last five years! So naturally, it is a very nice feeling to be able to work with old friends.

Is a sequel to Jassi in the offing?

There is nothing planned. Actually, looking back in hindsight I think I am responsible for this rumour doing rounds. I was attending a party where Rakshanda Khan, Deeya, Tony, and myself were there apart from other friends. As part of a casual conversation, I broached the topic of a sequel to Jassi. There was a reporter in the party who overheard our conversation and printed the news about a sequel to Jassi being planned! I started getting calls and messages from all over the place about this and that is how the rumour spread!

You are also playing a role in Rajkumar Hirani's new film '3 Idiots'. Tell us something about that.

We have already finished our first round of shooting in Shimla in September and awaiting call for the second round. It was an amazing experience and I enjoyed the shooting a lot. I am playing Kareena Kapoor's sister Mona in the film. I still remember the first scene we shot for the film. Apart from Kareena and I, the scene also had Boman Irani and a number of other artistes. It was a long scene where timing of comedy was very important. I was very tense about it. Thankfully it came out well.

What are your new year resolutions?

I am not in favour of making resolutions because I feel they are made to be broken. However, I have listed some priorities for 2009 which I hope to fulfill.

Mona Singh loses 5 kgs in 27 days

Mona Singh was looking super slim and pretty at the Gitaa Calendar Launch earlier this week. So we asked her the secret…

"I have been somewhat of a yo-yo as I keep gaining and losing weight. But I realized I had to be more consistent as I was getting into films. So on the 4th of January I started dieting and exercising and I have already lost 5 kilos," smiles Mona

About her exercise routine, she says, "I go to the gym every single day for 2 hours. I go in the evening or morning, depending on my schedule. I do lots of cardio in the form on high intensity workouts as I want a lean look. I run for 60 minutes, I do cross training, body combats and body flex. I keep changing the routine so it continues to be interesting for me and I don't get bored. I used to be very lazy earlier but I now have become very fitness focused. I love running and steam and sauna sessions."

She also follows a strict diet. Mona tells us, "My diet is no oil, no sweets and no carbohydrates. I eat salads, fruits and veggies along with drinking 4 litres of water everyday. I also like egg white omelettes. I don't have any binge day as yet. But sometime in February I will start giving myself 2 days off when I can eat whatever I want. I miss eating rice the most. But on the flipside, my diet is so healthy that my skin is glowing and I am feeling so happy and energetic. I love the emotional boost I have got from seeing my body responding to all my hard work."

Mona has an important role in Raju Hirani's 3 Idiots and loved her first schedule. "I shot for my first schedule in Shimla. I was nervous because it is such a big banner, director, cast and film. Every cast member except Aamir was there. Everyone started clapping after I gave my first shot and told me, 'Welcome to the big world!' I felt so happy and that's something I will cherish forever. I am looking forward to the February schedule as we are just like a family so I don't feel lost and lonely at all. Everyone is so sweet, warm and helpful and they make me feel at home," signs off the pretty actress.
