Comedy is a tough task
Sunday, January 11, 2009 19:41Mona Singh's tried her hand at dancing, after the popular Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, and now she's doing a comedy reality
Mona Singh show.
Flattered by the response she has received from her admirers after her first performance in Arre Deewano Mujhe Pehchano, Mona says, "I have received loads of messages from my fans. They are all very impressed with my efforts. I'm enjoying every bit of the attention." Despite having already participated in more than a couple of reality shows, Mona admits that she had apprehensions before she gave her final nod to this offer. "People who judge reality shows are rude to the contestants. And I, as a celebrity participant, didn't want to experience that humiliation on national television. I agreed to be a part of the show only when I was assured that the show didn't have any politics," she says.
She believes comedy is not easy and even the slightest deviation from the topic can make one's act irritating rather than funny. "Comedy is a tough task. I was quite nervous about my first performance. It is pretty normal for one to get jittery. Also, there is the fear of forgetting lines. But then, as a performer, you have to overcome your fears and give your best shot at what has been assigned to you."
Did the presence of more experienced actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Gulshan Grover and Divya Dutta ever worry her? "No. But it sure made the task more challenging. I agree, I don't have decades of acting experience or exposure to stage shows, but then it is all about shedding inhibitions, combating obstacles and emerging as a winner. Before I gave my first performance in this show all I told myself was 'Just go, give it your best shot. You are here to make people laugh. There is no competition.' I'm happy it worked for me."
Sounding upbeat about the character she played in the first episode, Mona says, "I just wanted to look funny in my first show. There was no need for me to go on stage as Mona Singh. It was a conscious decision to dress up like a fat woman. I didn't want to poke fun at anybody and just wanted to make fun of myself to make others laugh."
And has she ever encountered a situation where she became the butt of other people's jokes? "It happened when we had just started shooting for the show. Most of the actors would make fun of me. They just couldn't understand why I didn't opt for a glamourous role. I remember going back home in tears."
She also talks about Harbhajan Singh, her partner on Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. She says, "He's a great buddy. I don't know why he's considered aggressive."
