I agree that a teacher's enthusiasm for a subject especially english goes a long way towards motivating a student's perception. I had a wonderful english literature teacher who introduced me to a classic novel that to this day some ten years later is still my favourite book of all time.

I've generally read classics for leisure, becasue I do believe that you do get alot more out them and they tend to stay with you longer than most other contemporary novels. Here's a question: Do you remember a classic novel years after to read it? Do you remember an average contemporry novel years after to read it/

I think the classics stay with us longer because the stories are that much greater, than the contemporary books of today, which by the way tend to "borrow" a lot of themes from the classics. Tell me who can tell about love, hate, honour, greed, betrayal better than Shakespere and who can tell about relationships and soceity's perceptions better than Jane Austen?
