Kahani hostel ki
For hostel girls, scheming in-laws and saintly husbands provide ideal succour, says Baisakhi Roy

Mumbai, August 29: ARRE, Jassi lagao," comes an authoritative shriek from the dinner table. And, tamely enough, the measly 10 terrified non-soap watchers switch channels. To prime time's most famous secretary and her achy-breaky love life. Welcome to the hostel—a working women's hostel to be precise, where real-life secretaries are baying for Armaan Sir's (Apurva Agnihotri) blood. ''That c@*% deserves to be lynched. He is duping poor Jassi,'' groans an irate 25-year-old, who has been with the nerdy do-gooder through all her ups and downs. ''Why doesn't she fall for Purab (Samir Soni)? It's beyond me, he's such a nice guy,'' says an ad executive. The day's episode sees Jassi accused of scheming with Purab to bring Armaan down, and her reputation is at stake. So the girls have to hold their breath till tomorrow. Or at least till the switch—''the story of every household'', that is, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.

As Parvati bhabhi protects the shuddering flame of her ghar ka diya, a biker gang has arrived. ''There was a bad man in the house called Deven. He got killed and now his four children and catty second wife have come to claim his share of the Agarwal business,'' informs a 22-year-old banker. Deven who? Aggarwal who? And who's the first wife? ''Umm... that would be Anamika, or is it Ananya. Never mind now, shhh!'' she says loudly, abandoning one to meander through the complex and obviously promiscuous Agarwal parivaar. As the new claimant (that's Kunika in a short crop and with a catty meow as background score) to the family fortunes goes about humiliating the everyone in the household, cuss words are exchanged in the audience too. During an earth-shattering emotional dialogue between Parvati and Anamika (or Ananya, or whatever), a cellphone rings shrilly. ''Arre, if you talk so loudly, kaise sunengey? We will lose the connection, no?'' protests a Parvati bhakt with eyes flashing like her screen idol. The stage is set for a showdown in real life. And only some emergency channel switching—to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi—averts fisticuffs. All the ladies are cursing Tulsi (yup, Ms Iraani, you've got to be careful who you hurt) for throwing step-son Karan (telly's current poster boy) out of the house. Tulsi suspects Karan (Hiten Tejwani) of cuddling up with Nandini (Gauri Pradhan), who is wife to Ansh (Akashdeep Saigal), her other son. Whew! Additional ire is directed against the agonisingly patient Nandini, who just refuses to protest. ''This is the first family I've seen where the women are so dumb and clueless—plain stupid,'' says a 26- year-old junior copywriter incredulously. It's time for the final show before bidding good night. Drool time at 11.00 pm is slotted for Sujal (Rajeev Khandelwal) in Kahi To Hoga. Hearts bleed for this hunk who is intensely hated by the lady he loves: Kashish (Aamna Sharif). Comments fly fast and furious: ''She's quite a chalu cheez. She loves torturing Sujal because she knows she'll get any man she wants... What's with her hair extensions today, man... She's quite hip for a widow, hai na!'' Did we forget to mention that the lovely lass was mourning for Piyush, whom she'd lost in an accident apparently staged by Sujal? And before you ask ''Piyush who?'' pat comes the reply: ''Arre, her husband—he died in March.'' Prime picks
Tulsi
for always getting it wrong
Ansh in Kyunki.. for his wicked smiles
Karan in Kyunki.. for forever losing out on love
Oomphiest ma-in-law Vasu in Kahi To Hoga for her strappy numbers
