Its an amalgamation of all the factors. Lyrics may not be pivotal, but do play an important role.

me neither. They seemed okay at first but after i saw the film I really liked them.

As for a song's success though lyrics are important, people pay attention to the music and singers more. Dard e disco, chiggy wiggy, mauja hi mauja they were all appreciated chart wise. But the lyrics were nothing to rave about. I personally can't like a song if the lyrics don't touch my heart.

Good music and simple lyrics......

Success of a song mainly depends on the audience. As the audience changes , the type of songs becoming successful also change. Previously, the people did pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, now its basically the tone, something catchy, which gets the most attention, though the song  may be something like love mera hit ghit pit shi* 😆. A different voice, not necessarily surili awaaz,  also can lead to some hit songs (oooooooo huzoor😆). Atif would also be one with a different voice.
