'Lost' and found

Ian Somerhalder bites into success on 'Vampire Diaries'

Boston Herald Features Reporter
Tenley Woodman is a feature writer for the Boston Herald. She concentrates on teen issues and general entertainment.

It's been a busy couple of weeks for actor Ian Somerhalder.

The Louisiana native taped the season finale for CW's "The Vampire Diaries" (tonight at 8 on WLVI [website], Ch. 56) and scenes for the "Lost" series finale.

That's right, Boone is returning.

"I was gone for a total of 60 hours," Somerhalder said of his crazy commute from the set of "Vampire Diaries" in Atlanta to "Lost's" Hawaiian location.

Somerhalder talked to the Herald this week via telephone from Los Angeles. The 31-year-old offered clues as to what might be in store for Damon Salvatore, his tormented bloodsucker from "Vampire Diaries," and his thoughts on the end of "Lost."

"Make no mistake about it, Damon came to Mystic Falls not caring about anything but himself. He is starting to forge these relationships, and he is starting to care about people and things. It's dangerous for him. It is not where he wants to be," Somerhalder said.

Damon is part of a complex love triangle involving his fellow vampire and brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) and human Elena (Nina Dobrev).

"There is a cool twist that I think adds a real cool layer that will be interesting to see in season two. There are a couple deaths. There are a lot of twists and turns in this episode. It was a lot of fun to shoot. I just hope it doesn't suck," he said, then laughed.

Though he plays a bad boy on TV, Somerhalder spends his free time finding homes for shelter animals through his Twitter account.

"Other than marine biology, if I wasn't doing this (acting), this is what I would be doing," Somerhalder said.

That's a very Boone Carlyle thing to say. Somerhalder's character was killed off during "Lost's" first season.

"I think Boone got a lot of the sympathy card because he just never got a chance to figure out his worth on that island due to an untimely death," the actor said. "It was just a beautiful, life-changing experience being on that show. I am grateful to those guys every day. A show like that gives you so much. When that door closes, two more open."

Boone popped up in this season's premiere in "Lost's" flash-sideways, but Somerhalder could not discuss what his latest - and last - appearance entails.

"It was really cool to do these scenes that I did a couple weeks ago in Hawaii," he said. "It felt good to be a part of it."

The Vampire Diaries" Ian Somerhalder: 'Honestly, my heart is crushed'
In: Interviews
May
13

Ian Somerhalder is no stranger to television. Some of us remember his early performance as Hamilton on The WB's "Dawson's Creek" spin-off "Young Americans" in 2000. More remember his arcs on "Smallville" and the racy "Tell Me You Love Me." With a decade of TV work under his belt, Somerhalder truly hit his stride during the 2009-2010 season. Not only was he asked to reprise his role as Boone on "Lost," but he managed to do it while still appearing in every single episode of "The Vampire Diaries."

When "Diaries" wrapped on Season 1 in Atlanta, Somerhalder, a native of Covington, La., planned to relax. "I was honestly going home to Louisiana to hang out with my family, eat some of mom's cooking, and fish," he says. "Other than publicity work, that was my entire schedule for the break."

That all changed on April 20 when tragedy struck the Deepwater Horizon, a drilling rig positioned on the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast. An explosion destroyed the ship, which sank, triggering an oil spill from a deep-water oil well operated by BP. Weeks later, thousands of barrels of oil continue to gush into the water Somerhalder grew up playing in.

"I never wanted to be one of those actors with a political agenda," Somerhalder says. He's only been in Los Angeles for two hours since returning from Louisiana, where he's been doggedly working to help the cause. "But this has become Obama's Katrina in the way he's dealt with it. It's a massive disaster, on a scale we haven't even begun to fathom, and it could have been stopped by a valve that cost half a million dollars."

He struggles to contain his emotion as he speaks, apologizing several times between expressing his frustration. "I'm not a negative person," he says. "I'm just scared right now. No one really knows what's happening. From what we see on the surface, NOAA and the oceanographers can estimate what's coming out of the rig. But BP has denied scientists access to the footage of the gushing leak below the surface, so there's no way for us to know the actual realistic scale of the damage that's still happening. NOAA is a government administration! Why isn't Obama stepping in and demanding that footage, demanding a live view of what's going on?"

He curses, and then apologizes again. "I never talk about politics, but right now is a time to be angry and sad. There are countless people, children and families, who depend on that Gulf. It's their livelihood. I'm afraid for them."

Last week, Somerhalder shot several PSAs to promote awareness. "There are a lot of people who can't physically get to Louisiana to help," he says. "What's going to happen is, there's going to be a massive wildlife cleanup recovery effort, and that's where most of the help and donations will be needed." He suggests that we visit the Audubon Institute's website to learn more about the cause that's so close to his heart.

"I feel like I could cry right now," he admits sadly. "It's not just because it's my home. Just watching all these very proud, hardworking fishermen, who have never asked for anything in their lives, who support themselves and their families for generations with this one industry. Now it's likely to disappear. If it'll ever recover, we're talking decades and decades. It's beyond tragic."

It's nearly impossible to reconcile him with his callous and calculating "Vampire Diaries" character, Damon Salvatore. "I never saw it coming that by the end of the season, Damon would even give a **** about anything," Somerhalder laughs. "Damon is a character who, from conception, has never had anything to lose. But right now, suddenly, he cares about people. He cares about places. When you care, you stand to lose."

When the series returns for Season 2 in the fall, Somerhalder hopes Damon returns to some of his old ways. "I hope he gets back to biting people and having fun and getting high on blood all the time. He's been so serious lately, forging these relationships, and I think it makes him wildly uncomfortable."

It's no secret that Damon's damage is the result of the beautiful Katherine. "She wrecked him, man," Somerhalder sighs. He considers the inevitable confrontation between Katherine and Damon. "I don't know how that's going to work, but I'm curious. Damon is used to being the strongest guy around. He has no fear. Katherine is stronger than him, she's smarter. She out-foxed him."

"Damon knows he got played. There was this naivete that he had as a 23-year-old boy in 1864, and somehow, he allowed that naivete to stow away with him through 150 years of living and traveling and understanding the world. Now, finally, he's smart enough to understand the irony of that."

Though "The Vampire Diaries" is only on its first season, Somerhalder is already nostalgic for the good old days. His favorite episode to shoot, he says, was "The Lost Girls," their fifth episode and, interestingly, his castmate Nina Dobrev's favorite as well.

"It's the one where Damon turns Vicki," Somerhalder says. "It's still my favorite. I read it, and I called Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec, co-creators] to thank them. Me and Kayla Ewell had so much fun shooting that episode. It was before Kayla was gone. Her leaving really put a damper on the show for me, but when we shot that episode, it was innocent and it was happy. We didn't know anyone was dying. We all thought we were safe. We were just having a blast with the beautiful, tight script."

Along with the fans, Somerhalder has delighted in every new plot twist. "The fact that Damon actually killed Elena's mom and had an affair with her, and now he has the hots for Elena? It's all so twisted and sick and I love it!" he laughs, some of his earlier melancholy shaking off.

"Oh, and when you hear the story about how everything went down between Stefan and Damon? What happened was that Stefan wanted Damon to turn so that he wouldn't lose his brother. He wanted to spend an eternity with his brother." VD120b_0671b

Always up for a challenge, Somerhalder is looking forward to more flashbacks into Damon's past. "There are always decades that interest people," he says. "For me, that's the Roaring Twenties. I'd love to see Damon in the '20s. The '30s, the '40s… oh, God. The '70s! Could you imagine Damon wearing a polyester shirt? Just this huge lapel and really fluffy, long hair? Oh man."

When asked what he thinks Damon was really like back then, Somerhalder pauses for a drawn-out moment, almost as if he's deferring to Damon for an answer. "Of course he had to get a little fun in," he says. "A little action. But she was always there, Katherine was always there. He's fiercely committed to her. What's that Beatles song?" He hums to himself. "'You ought to know that I've been good, as good as I can be.' It's like that."

He's referring to the song "Wait," which is, of course, what Damon has done for the last 150 years. It's also what fans will be doing all summer long after "Founder's Day," tonight's season finale.

"The Vampire Diaries" cast is notoriously hard to break when it comes to spoilers, but one thing he will tell us about the season ender is that it marks a turning point for Damon and Elena. "You see an interesting kind of change happen in the relationship between them," he says. "It was refreshing; something really new. Something different for Nina and I to play with."

When describing his co-stars, Ian jokes, "Well, we'd better love each other, because we're stuck with each other for 185 days a year!"

"I remember right when we finished shooting those beautiful billboard ads that were everywhere last fall, Paul [Wesley] and I went to a restaurant that's a mutual favorite of ours and we got a bottle of wine and we toasted. I said, 'Man, we could have been doing this with anybody else in the world. That would've sucked. But instead, it's us.' We've got such a great understanding of each other. Sometimes you come into people's lives for a reason. There's an attraction there, between the energies. We're lucky. I tell these guys just to remember, we are the luckiest kids in Hollywood."

Somerhalder's own good fortune makes him all the more concerned for those struck by tragedy. "The thing is," he says, "I know I'm not being all bubbly and positive right now. I want everyone to know that I'm excited and ecstatic about the show. I love it. I'm so glad it's doing well. But my heart is back in Louisiana, you know? Honestly, my heart is crushed."

The Vampire Diaries: Love at First Bite

By Ileane Rudolph January 20, 2010 01:36 PM EST

What's a girl to do after she discovers she looks exactly like her vampire lover's squeeze from 145 years ago? How about run off with her boyfriend's dangerous, equally undead brother? When the CW hit returns, Elena (Nina Dobrev) travels with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to get info on how to release his true love, Katherine, from her tomb. Elena and Damon's surprising new bond, the intensifying existential angst of her beau, Stefan (Paul Wesley), and several mysterious new characters spice up the supernatural romance as it hurtles toward Season 1's explosive finale. "We're leading up to the town's Founder's Day celebration, where all hell breaks loose," says exec producer Kevin Williamson. TV GUIDE MAGAZINE sat down with Vampire Diaries' hot trio in Atlanta, where the pals teased each other mercilessly and shared their experiences on the fangtastic series.

So which of you would make the best vampire in real life?
Somerhalder: Definitely me.
Dobrev: I agree.
Wesley: Ian does have hypnotic eyes. But Nina, I thought you were convinced I'm really a vampire?
Dobrev: Ian has this vampire quality, but Paul has fangs. [Wesley shows off his pointy canines.] And he just appears places and he's very brooding.

Actors always love to play baddies. Are either of you a little jealous Ian gets to play the devilish Damon?
Dobrev: I'm lucky because I get to play two characters: sweet Elena and Katherine, who's a crazy bitch.
Wesley: What's cool about our characters is that they're not one-dimensional. Damon has some good in him and Stefan has some evil in him.

Well, in upcoming flashbacks, you get to play the innocent Stefan and Damon instead of their undead personas.
Somerhalder: It's fun to play Damon and Stefan as friends because you never usually see us that way.
Wesley: Pre-vampire Stefan is so uncomplicated, it's fun. But Stefan 145 years later is really heavy. What 162-year-old wants to hang out with high-school kids? Somebody who's escaping what they are.

It's Team Damon versus Team Stefan! Whom do you think fans want Elena to be with?
Wesley: I'm president of the Team Damon fan club. I have a Facebook page as 13-year-old Ashley, who subtly manipulates people into hating Damon.
Somerhalder: [Laughter] So that's why you yell at me to go away when I knock on your door!
Dobrev: Fans are so split. I get letters like, "Why did you break up with Stefan? You're perfect together." Then, "Why isn't Elena with Damon? They belong together."

Bloodsucking aside, which of these guys would Nina go for in real life?
Dobrev: I would take Defan'the other brother.
Somerhalder: Or Stamon!
Dobrev: Or Stamon, who has qualities of both, who is sweet and nurturing but has an edge, and can be fun and crazy at times.

How much of you is in your onscreen alter egos?
Somerhalder: I love eating and killing people.
Wesley: And I hunt for little animals to eat in the woods. No!
Somerhalder: Damon has a lust for life like I do. But he's also essentially a lonely guy. I know what it's like to be lonely.
Wesley: What Ian and I have in common with each other and our characters is that we both left home so young. I was on my own and working in New York at 16. I just didn't fit into my town.
Somerhalder: I left my house the week after my 16th birthday.
Dobrev: I was barely 17 when I left home. It helps me relate to Elena, who was forced to take care of her brother when her parents died.

You seem like a very close cast. Tell us something fun about yourselves and each other.
Wesley: My real last name is Wasilewski. I lived in Poland when I was younger.
Dobrev: I was born in Bulgaria. We share that, growing up different.
Wesley: I do have a major issue with Nina's obscenely loud gum chewing.
Dobrev: He hides gum from me!
Somerhalder: Paul texts so loud!
Wesley: The clicking would drive Ian insane. Now I have an iPhone.
Dobrev: Ian adopted a cat in Hawaii.
Somerhalder: I found him on the beach on the set of Lost.

Here's what the producers said about each of you. "We'll all be working for Nina someday. She's a smart businesswoman and knows what she wants."
Somerhalder: We already do!
Dobrev: I am a Capricorn—I am stubborn. And driven.

"Paul is a thoughtful, heady guy who really works to get inside his roles."
Wesley: I take ownership of that.

And lastly, "Ian comes vampire ready. He looks you in the eye and makes you do whatever he wants."
Somerhalder: [Laughs] I try.
Wesley: So Ian gets the only cool accolade? Nina's organized but a bossy beeyotch. Paul sits there and sulks, but Ian has a major power. Thanks, guys! Interestingly, I've played far more characters that are similar to Damon than to Stefan.
Somerhalder: None of my previous characters ever had fun. Boone from Lost was such a wimp. He really didn't have much power. That's what drew me to Damon.

How many times have you said, "Our source material predates 'Twilight'"?
Somerhalder: About 479! Paul and I saying over and over again, "We're not Edward Cullen" helps, too.
Wesley: People ask me if I'm in "Twilight," and I'm like, "I don't do this to look like a vampire! I've had this hairstyle for 10 years."

Have you seen "New Moon"? Admit it.
Dobrev: I will. I read the books and thought they were great. I don't feel resentful toward "Twilight."
Somerhalder: We're grateful.
Wesley: Their wild box-office success paved the way for every vampire project in production.

Were you vampire fans before you joined the show?
Somerhalder: I'm from New Orleans, so I grew up with Anne Rice.
Dobrev: "Interview With a Vampire"—Brad Pitt with fangs, what's better than that?
Somerhalder: Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley with fangs!

UK Fans!!!!!!
Ian, Nina And Paul will be at HMV, 150 Oxford Street, London at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 3rd. Because they're only going to be there for an hour, places are limited to 350, and you'll need to obtain a wristband from the Oxford Street store on the day. They'll be available from 9am on a first come first serve basis, so you'll need to get in there quickly.

Ian Somerhalder Hot For The CW

Posted by taylor blue on May 21, 2010
| Comments (1)

When I think of the CW I think of Ian Somerhalder or Jensen Ackles. They are really two of my favorites. I have even went so far to make sure that I order that channel so I can't miss them in either shows. Canadian channels are funny and sometimes don't show the show the same night.

Ian was at the Upfront Presentation at Madison Square Garden in New York last night. I have to admit that he is looking very dapper in that suit. The CW also announced their Fall schedule and when the shows would be on.

Monday: Gossip Girl, Thursday: Vampire Diaries and Friday: Supernatural. I'm not even sure why they made that change to Supernatural. I think it was for the best of the show to stay on Thursday.

Paul Wesley & His Messy Hair Go For A Walk

Posted by taylor blue on May 23, 2010
| Comments (1)

Paul Wesley and his girlfriend, Torrey DeVitto, were spotted taking a walk in New York City yesterday. You can tell that Paul is on hiatus from Vampire Diaries right now. His hair is all messy and all over the place. I wonder if they would ever make Stefan look like that? It's a different look for him that's for sure.

The season finale of Vampire Diaries was explosive. I know I can't wait for season 2!

Kellan Lutz and Paul Wesley redeem Cosmo

Posted by WillowRaine on March 29, 2010
| Comments (1)

Go ahead and stare, take your time I'll wait. *Drumming my fingertips on my desk* Waiting…waiting… okay you good?
You have a little *hands you a napkin* yeah drool, right there.
Now I know I'm a little late on this post – ohhh 28 days to be exact, since this event happened March 1st or so I hear.
Please forgive me, I don't even read Cosmopolitan (I know, I'm a weird excuse for a girl on occasion, most occasions), so I had no idea when their "Fun Fearless Males" convention was. Had I known, better yet, had I known it would involve these two men, I would have been well aware of these pictures before now and brought this to you sooner.
I know what you're thinking "Willow, there are three men in that picture". Yes, you're absolutely right. Kellan Lutz, Stephen Moyer and Paul Wesley.
However, I admittedly had to ask Taylor who Stephen was, (I tell you I just don't watch much television underneath my rock) and honestly the only reason I chose this picture…well hell it's obvious to me…is because Kellan and Paul are both giving damn good face…Kellan especially. I swear some of the expressions that man makes leads my mind to roll in mud and lay in the gutter.
It is for that reason alone that I actually considered reading Cosmopolitan magazine…yes me.
Sexy men can be very persuasive, no?
That being said, I'll leave you with my thoughts for the sexy beasts in the photo.

Dearest Kellan and Paul,

I know it's probably odd addressing the both of you, but I figured that you could read this together, save us all some time.
You should be ashamed of yourselves for being so sexy, it really is a crime. Since I am so selfless, I'll be the one handling your punishment.
As Kellan is already well informed, I do possess handcuffs, and I'm not afraid to show you tough love. I'll try not to make your sentence too awfully unbearable, just one solid week of earth shattering pleasure and not stepping outdoors. I figure since you both play the undead it shouldn't be too much of an issue, method acting and all of that. Maybe after-wards you'll learn not to be so damn enticing…or you'll embrace your sexiness, either way I'm good.
Please report to me, Willow Raine, post haste.
Thank you in advance for your timely response in handling this matter,

Willow.

Paul Wesley Covers DaMan Magazine

Posted by taylor blue on April 1, 2010
| Comments (1)

It seems like anything vampires is hot right now, Vampire Diaries, Twilight, or True Blood. I am loving this new pop culture phenomenon and I am embracing it with everything I have. When I saw that Paul Wesley was on the April/May 2010 issue of the 3rd Anniversary of DaMan I squealed. I am an Ian Somerhalder girl but I am still a fan of Paul too. (Willow Raine loves Paul!) Remember that Vampire Diaries is on tonight!
