Do Aussies have poor sporting spirit?

Posted: 13 years ago

The relation between India & Oz is taking a nose dive.

If the attack on students resulted in decline of applications from Indian students for Oz university, the upcoming news is even worse.
Indian students' enrolment in the Australian universities is likely to decline by 80 per cent in the 2011, a leading Australian academic has warned, against the backdrop of a slew of attacks on the youths from the community
This news is very disturbing

At the top of the medal tally and the undisputed champions of the Commonwealth Games, the Australian team, sadly didn't show any sporting spirit when their cricket team lost the Test series to India on Wednesday.

Enraged by the humiliating loss, some athletes, according to highly-placed sources in Delhi Police, went berserk, destroying electrical fittings and furniture in their tower in the Games Village on Tuesday and Wednesday

Not just that, policemen posted there say they also shouted slogans against batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who played a pivotal role in ensuring India's victory in the Bangalore match, and flung a washing machine down from the eighth floor of their tower.

In  the CWG itself an oz wrestler lost his silver when he showed obscene gesture to judges after losing to a local .

I think if we also lived in a country that had the highest concentration of venomous creatures (and I'm not referring to Ponting's men) in the world then we would also be edgy. Box Jellyfish, blue bottles, taipans, funnel spiders. Heck that country lost a Prime Minister strolling on the beach.

I'm not too concerned about Australia. I mean their only real claim to fame is deadly creatures. Its mostly desert and a giant fence with random interspersed pockets of civilization. Not a country I'd care to make friends with. I won't upset them though, they might drop box jellyfish in my pool.

Race relations in Australia have a long history and are complicated. Perhaps watching movies like Australia or The Rabbit-Proof Fence will give an insight into the fascinating history and society of Australia. Even The Thorn Birds does a good job at capturing life in the bleak and desolate circumstances and why Australians tend to be socially more aggressive and uncouth compared to the rest of the world. Bill Bryson's 'In a sunburned country' provides a humorous read into the land of Oz.

They are  bad losers and without the true spirit of sportsmanship .
Many players from australia  were said to be either migrants or having refugee status., and not the "true blooded " australian , whatever thats supposed to mean ! The aborigins of Australia anyway didnt participate. So much for the racial discrimination  there !

They will be always agressive specimen from what  I know is that most of the initial western settlers were outlaws and criminals who were banished by various western governments. It is perfect genetic confluence of various aggressive people.

Cant be expecting much from a bunch of criminal descendants ! The way the australian cricket team under Ponting behaved , shoving an Indian Minister from the podium  for their photo shoot is still quite fresh ! Boorish in their win, scoundrels in their defeat thats what these bunch from the land of kangaroos are ! The Indian students ought to think twice before choosing australia as a destination fortheir higher studies. The numbers have shown a steep decline already !

You can't paint the entire nation for acts of few, similarly just because few members of Aus CWG team indulged in shameful acts does not mean bashing other Aus players also. But yes, the guilty players should be punished (which is not being done at the moment). They should be made to apologise and maybe banned from entering India for few years.

Racist scandal in Oz: Cops joke about Indian's electrocution
In a shocking incident, top Australian police officers have been caught in a racist e-mail scandal joking about the electrocution of an Indian train passenger and suggesting that it could be "a way to fix the Indian student problem" in Melbourne.
Its not just ordinary citizens of Australia who indulged in such misbehaviour at some random event but sportsmen competing at an international event. ! They represent their country in such events. When they win medals they win accolades for their country so when they misbehave they bring shame upon the country they represent at that very same event !
If an entire  country gets painted as a winner based on the medals won by a few sportsperson then by the same logic that entire country can also be painted as a country of delinquents for the acts of those very people !

Australian Champ Dani's $20k challenge to Poonia
19 Oct, 2010, 0135 hrs IST, Saibal Bose, TNN
JAIPUR: She pulled out of the Commonwealth Games but now she's seething for a showdown. In a challenge straight out of the Wild West, Australian discus world champ Dani Samuels has demanded a duel with Krishna Poonia, who led a historic Indian 1-2-3 sweep of the event at the Games.

The prize is $20,000, and the winner takes it all. But Samuels is unwilling to face Poonia on her home ground and wants the face-off to be held in Australia.

"A sponsor has offered $20,000 winner-takes-all, making it the biggest cash prize for a discus event in the world. The Diamond League offers $10,000 prize money, well we have doubled that to give Poonia her shot at the champ," Samuels' coach Denis Knowles was quoted as saying by the Australian media.

Poonia is ready to take up any challenge, but only if it is before December. "It has been a gruelling year," Krishna's husband Virender Poonia told TOI on Monday. "She would be resting after December. So, if Dani has any challenges in mind, it had better be before that, and at a neutral venue."

Poonia is ready for the face-off with Samuels but is yet to get any communication from the other side. "We have neither received a phone call nor a mail from anyone associated with Dani regarding this challenge," said Virender, who accompanied his wife to Patiala on Monday for a training camp. "We can only commit after we are told about the date."

He added that Krishna would under no circumstance compromise on her Asian Games participation for this challenge. "We will go for the gold there (Guangzhou)," Virender said. "If Dani wants Krishna to compete with her during the Asian Games, our answer is no."

I would call this another instance of bad sportsmanship ! Whatever prevented Dani from participating in the CWG ? Was she too scared of all the terrorist threats that were doing the rounds in media. The other sportspeople had more trust , courage and faith.  She lost on those counts.
If Dani wanted to so badly proove herself to be the best she ought to have competed in the event. If you have missed an event then you ve missed it girl !!! If every wannabe champion  goes on challenging the winner after the sports event is over then there would be no end to it !

This article does not mention the apparent reason for Dani fuming up. It was reported that Krishna Poonia had commented somewhere that  Dani had pooled out of the games due to her poor form. Dani had come across this comment somewhere and this prompted her to bid for challenge.
