The new No. 2 GEC

A month after the launch of Kaun Banega Crorepati and riding on the back of its aam aadmi wave, Sony Entertainment Television recorded a high of 271 GRPs in week 38 (September 11 to 17, 2011), which was Sony's highest GRPs in many years. Consolidating its no 2 position for the fifth consecutive week, the channel was strikingly close to the numero uno Star Plus with a difference of only 21 GRPs. A month and a half later ' week 45 (October 30 to November 5), Sony hit another high of 287 GRPs, which was again Sony's highest since 2002. But post KBC a different picture was expected to emerge. From an average of 260 GRPs between August 15 to November 17, Sony's GRPs were expected to fall to around 210-220 level. As a result, from a strong no 2 player, the channel was also expected to slide down to no 3 slot.

Sony did fall but it wasn't steep. Against an expected 60 GRP drop, Sony fell by 40 GRPs. The market expected bit of a shock. Even the channel officials were not confident enough of sustaining robust numbers, which was quite evident in their body language, vague posturing and evasive replies to queries on the performance of shows replacing KBC as well as the channel's numbers post KBC. However, Sony has surprised the industry and its analysts with average 240 GRPs in the last eight weeks.

What has helped Sony retain its position as a strong number 2 GEC? "It has capitalised well on the gains from KBC. While most of its shows picked up during KBC, Sony also found reasonably good replacements for the game show," says group accounts director Anil Kumar of media buying agency Starcom. Both Dekha Ek Khwaab and Parvarish are delivering an average of 2 TVRs against 4.5 season average of KBC which, in Kumar's opinion, are decent numbers for new shows against older popular brands that are averaging around 4 TVR.The shortfall has been made up by contribution from Sony's strong weekend band, particularly crime shows like CID, Crime Patrol and Adaalat that have grown by 20 to 25 per cent.

Admits Sony's head of marketing Danish Khan, "A combination of content and aggressive marketing has worked for us. The post KBC drop has been offset by our weekday fiction and weekend shows." According to industry analysts, after KBC, Sony upped the ante both in content and marketing. Though they were anticipating stiff competition from other channels, it turned out to be quite sluggish. That's the reason why Colors is where it was eight weeks ago at 234 GRPs, while Zee is at 169 and Star Plus at 325(all eight-week average GRPs).

While the fall from current levels seems unlikely, industry analysts say that Sony needs to do a lot more to sustain its numbers because the competition will not give it enough room to breathe easily. Sony, on its part, seems to be geared up for challenge. Come January 30 and its prime-time will have two key changes. The popular 10 pm daily Saas Bina Sasural will be moved to 9 pm and its place will be taken by Ekta Kapoor's second fiction show for Sony, Kya Hua Tera Vaada. The idea behind gifting Kapoor the prime fertile is that both the channel and producer feel the show can be a potential star performer at 10 pm, given its theme of infidelity and absence of a clear leader in the slot. Currently, 10 pm shows like Navya, Uttaran, Saas Bina Sasural and Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein are averaging between 2 and 3 TVR.

Next month, Sony will launch another new show, a Hindi remake of Metti Oli at 8 pm by shifting Kuch To Log Kahenge to 11 pm, where it is a slot leader in repeat run. With that for the first time in a couple of years, Sony will have a complete line-up of fiction shows on its weekday band. "Our forthcoming shows have lot of potential and we are hoping that the refreshed weekday fiction band will contribute in our growth in 2012," says Khan. Industry analysts are of the view it is going to be a big challenge for Sony to catch up with Star Plus which is about 80 GRPs ahead. "Dramatic growth is quite unlikely. Hence the top slot is a long, long journey," says Kumar. However, he sees Sony holding on to its current GRPs or may be adding an extra 10 points.

However, the advantage with Sony is its unique positioning. It's not a mass channel like Star Plus and Zee and has not been a clear GEC leader. "It is an alternative GEC that chooses its viewer rather than viewer choosing it," says Sony's ex-fiction head and senior programming analyst Sanjay Upadhyay. In his view, if Star Plus and Zee reach out to Bharat, Sony addresses India' the educated, young, urban viewer. "It is the best alternative in mass entertainment space for a big chunk of viewers who are looking for innovative and progressive content," elaborates Upadhyay. However, having moved closest to the leader last year, there is a possibility for Sony to shake hands with Star Plus in 2012 when it launches the next season of KBC, provided Sony holds on to 250-260 GRPs over next eight months. Kumar doesn't rule out the possibility. Only time will tell if Sony will be able to consolidate its position this year.

Ramna Wadhawan to soon enter Parvarrish...

Enter the Indian saas, twists and turns awaited in the Sony TVshow...

Lots more twists and turns await Sweety's (Shweta Tiwari) life in Sony TV's Parvarrish - Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi, as her mother-in-law will soon enter the family.

Ramna Wadhawan, a veteran actor who has done both Bollywood and TV, will enter as Sweety's mother-in-law. It has already been established that Sweety is uncomfortable with her mother-in-law because she doesn't like her. On the other hand, Lucky (Vivek Mushran) is super happy and is stuffing all the things that his mom wants him to eat.

We contacted Ramna who confirmed the news, "Yes I am entering the show as a Punjabi mother-in-law who always wants her son to eat and stay fit. On the other hand, her daughter in law thinks that she doesn't like her. She is not strict but orthodox. I love the character."

Ramna Wadhawan will enter in the coming episodes of the show.

Parvarrish , Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi

We Have a downright winner with this show ! Audiences have been waiting forever now for such a show to be aired. The story of every Parent  , the dilemma of every teenager,  and the complexities of a modern family has been exceptionally potrayed. What better way than to come up with a show such as Parvarrish(KKKM).Taking home each moment , sleeping with every thought as a parent is the USP of this show. The realism in the story is fresh and relatable. Sony Television has hit the jackpot with launching this show and won bonus points  with having flawless actresses like Shweta and Rupali depicting 2 totally contrast mothers. Bring it on Kids , Mothers are here to stay !!

Tellywood's favorite actress on Women's Day

TNN | Mar 8, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Tellywood's favorite actress on Women's Day
Tina Dutta
On W-Day (and Holi), here's taking a look at some TRP-tripping characters from prime time telly who add color to our evenings

Perfect mix As Priya Kapoor in Bade Achche Lagte Hain, Sakshi Tanwar is independent, fun-loving and a caring person. A working woman who's just turned screen-bahu she enjoys exploring places, believes in charity, enjoys cooking and at the same time keeps an eagle eye on her husband's diet. The ultimate fantasy bahu for any urban family!

Funny face Daya (played by Disha Vakani) has become a part of Gujarati households over the years thanks to her flamboyant on screen presence. A caring homemaker, her trademark crackling laughter and her strange dialect have made her a much loved character, getting even children glued to the television to have a dekko of her.

Crusader to fringe bahu Anandi (played by Pratyusha Banerjee) of Balika Vadhu - Kachchi Umar Ke Pakke Rishte had just started off getting our applause as the new face of rural India and symbol of women empowerment when she was voted as the Sarpanch of her village. But the bouquets came too soon, Anandi is currently trying to win her straying hubby back from his second wife. Sic!

Earth mom Sweet and sacrificing sister, dedicated lover, perfect bahu and good mother, Archana of Pavitra Rishta (played by Ankita Lokhande) gives up on her marriage to please her brattish son and bitchy MIL (yes you heard it right!). You can go on and write a novel on her sacrificing acts, but she's also endearingly real and manages to make her presence felt amid the other tearjerking bahus.

Sugar & spice girl A vivacious small town girl who comes to Delhi to eke out a living, Khushi (played by Sanaya Irani) in Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon? gets romantically involved with a rich biz tycoon and even ends up married to him. This Mills& Boonish story could have had a spunkier female character than the mass of emotions that she's been reduced to of late! Get some of your courage back girl and leave the rona-dhona to the other cry babes!

Dream catcher beti A simple girl who dreams of becoming a Block Development Officer, Krishna (played by Mitali Nag) in Afsar Bitiya has a career interest that sets her apart from other small screen betis. She's so focused that she even rejects the love of an eligible man. Quite hatke!

The ultimate doormat princess Docile can be redefined if you think the painfully shy and devoted Gopi Bahu (played by Giaa Manek) of Saath Nibhana Saathiya. A Rajkot girl, Gopi's got a permanent worry mark on her face and has the uncanny ability to cow down to everyone (on the show), has enabled the serial to ride high on the TRP charts. An ideal (by telly definition, not ours), hopefully post this W-Day, she'll acquire some backbone too.

The sacrificial lamb Ichcha of Uttaran (played by Tina Dutta) can arouse varied emotions in you (not necessarily pleasant) as she tries to be the good daughter, friend, DIL, wife, mom. Phew! All that high pitched saccharine sweetness can give you diabetes (pun intended), but has kept the TRPs of the show soaring too! More power to her lachrymose glands.

Mom from hell Shweta Tiwari as Sweety Singh Ahluwalia in Parvarish... Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi is small screen's first tiger Mom and quite the showstealer. A strict Punjabi mom to two teenagers, she lives her life by her own rules and expects her family to do the same. Over-protective, intrusive but the ultimate earth mother, this is one woman who everyone loves to hate and love too!

Diva in khakee As the loud and OTT woman cop, Chandramukhi Chautala, Kavita Kaushik in FIR wears her khakee sexily like no one else can or has on telly. Honest, tough, straightforward with a motormouth and dry sense of humour, Chandramukhi's men might have changed in the last five years, but her ability to nab the baddies and keep the show going for five years remains constant.

Double whammy Sandhya (played by starling Deepika Singh) of Diya Aur Bati Hum, nursesdreams to become an IPS officer. Destiny might have temporarily made her a bahu of a rigid, and orthodox family, but Sandhya's trying a fine balance of chasing her dreams and making her in-laws happy.

In Sony TV's popular serial Parvarish, Shweta Tiwari is shown asking the audience what needs to be done in a particular situation that few of the characters in the serial find themselves in. The audience is asked to reply via sms. The concept of getting the audience interact with the channel and the serial characters is slowly gathering momentum.

Shweta Tiwari, who plays Sweety Singh Ahluwalia inParvarish, has asked the audience what they thought about sending her niece Raashi to a boarding school since the little girl is a rebel and misbehaves with her elders. Shweta asks people to send messages and advice them what they should do to take the serialParvarish forward.

The chances are that this move by the channel will get many people talking and sharing their opinion. In fact, the channel is likely to get more TRPs and more revenue since each message will cost a substantial amount!

Previously, in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hain on Star Plus, after Akshara and Natik (the leading protagonists) have a baby boy, Star TV asks the audience to suggest a name for the baby. This not only helped increase their TRP's, but also got the producers a lot of revenue.

Shweta Tiwari loves her part in Sony TV's Parvarrish!

Sometimes back it was in the news everywhere that TV actress Shweta Tiwari, who happens to be the first woman contestant to win Colors' Bigg Boss, wasn't happy with her track in DJ's A Creative Unit's Parvarrish aired on Sony TV.

Not only this, there were even reports about the lady throwing tantrums on the sets and showing off her starry side. However, if the recent developments have to be considered then one can call the above just a rumor created for spice. The show has successfully completed its 100 episodes and the feat was celebrated recently at a city based club.

The entire cast and crew of the show was seen gelling up well and enjoying the party. When sources got in touch with Shweta who plays Sweety in the daily, she expressed her views stating, "The cast and crew of the soap are truly lovable and I love my bacchas. They are very smart and friendly. I have always loved television, be it Bigg Boss and now Parvarrish. I feel humbled as a mother I feel very responsible and I can relate to it. I thoroughly enjoy doing the show".

Meanwhile, it is to be noted that Shweta's co-stars from the show also shunned the reports claiming of the former's starry attitude. Senior actors on the set like Rupali Ganguly, Vishal Singh and Vivek Mushran called her very supportive. In fact, the kids too are very fond of Shweta.

Looks like the gossips seekers need to get their facts checked!

When Ahluwalias and Ahujas meet Chaturvedis
Shweta Tiwari in 'Parvarrish – Kuchh Khatti Kuchh Meethi'

In the crossover (Mahamilaap) episode of the two shows - "Saas Bina Sasuraal" and "Parvarrish - Kuchh Khatti Kuchh Meethi", Lucky and Jeet ("Parvarrish...") decide to take their families to a small getaway in Mumbai.

While the Ahluwalias and Ahujas are busy spending time with their families, the Chaturvedis from "Saas Bina Sarural" are celebrating Toasty's return from the hospital after recovering from a coma.

The Ahujas' holiday is interrupted as their little boy Sunny goes missing and eventually reaches Tej. He takes Sunny home but soon learns what a nuisance he is and asks Ved and Pracheen to take him out for a ride. Coincidentally, Lucky spots Sunny, and Lucky and Ved are mistaken for kidnappers. Finally, Ved is caught by the Ahujas and Ahluwalias after a series of hits and misses. Tune in to Sony Entertainment Television tonight at 9 to catch all the action.
