Marriage trouble for Vineet & Mona in Kya Huaa?
Mona Singh and Darshan Pandya

Twists and turns are a part of TV soaps and now in Balaji Telefilms' acclaimed show, Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, relationships are about to go through a change.

Mr Johnson asks Vineet (Darshan Pandya) to take strict action against Pradeep for not performing his responsibilities well. When Mona ( Mona Singh) hears this, she feels bad for Pradeep (Pawan Shankar) and decides to help him by making a business presentation on his behalf. When Vineet sees Mona's concern for Pradeep, Vineet asks Mona to let go of her past and bid adieu to Pradeep for good. Mona even asks Pradeep to meet her for the last time and in his drunken state, he tells her that in spite of hurting her, he still loves Mona. But they say goodbye to each other for the last time as husband and wife.

But here's the twist! Sources inform that Vineet and Mona's wedding will go through its ups and downs and that in spite of being married, they will not be a couple. It remains unconfirmed whether the marriage will be stalled half way or whether in spite of being married officially, circumstances will prevent the duo from being together.

When contacted, Darshan Pandya aka Vineet said, "I don't know who Mona will settle with but I want her to get married and be happy. Even audiences want Mona to settle down. But you'll have to wait and watch to see what happens next. All I can say is that I completely love playing Vineet".

In this khichdi of emotions, will Pradeep and Mona after all this trouble, finally re-unite? With TV shows, one can never really say! Audiences will have to keep playing the guessing game!

Things are taking an extreme turn in Balaji Telefilms' Kya Huaa Tera Vaada on Sony Entertainment Television. With Pradeep being accused of Shaurya's murder, ex wife Mona steps in to rescue him.

In tomorrow's episode (1st November), Mona (Mona Singh) shocks everyone by saying that Pradeep (Pawan Shankar) could not have committed the murder because he was with her the previous night. Vineet (Darshan Pandya), Anu (Mauli Ganguly), the cops and everyone is shocked with Mona's revelation!

In order to cover up, she tells everyone that she wanted to give her marriage a last chance before separating from Pradeep and marrying Vineet. And that's why she spent the night with her ex. Even Pradeep is shocked with this confession. Sources inform that till the case is solved, Mona will stay with Pradeep and their proximity could spark off things between them and rekindle their relationship and could also save Pradeep.

Mouli Ganguly

Mona Singh, the protagonist of daily soap Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, might soon get rid of the biggest problem in her reel life ' the other woman, Anoushka Sarkar, played by Mouli Ganguly.
The latter has decided to quit the show, citing creative dissatisfaction. If sources are to be believed, she has already put in her papers and is serving notice period. Mouli, it seems, was unhappy about the way her role was shaping up. She expected her track to be based on Sushmita Sen's character in popular film Biwi No 1. But Anoushka's character, which started off with grey shades, later turned out to be totally negative. The actress found it impossible to relate to the current track.
When contacted, Mouli said she was giving a shot and would call back later. But she didn't answer our calls later.Mouli became famous as Shaina in Kahin Kissi Roz. She has also done a few other shows produced by Ekta Kapoor. So, will Ekta succeed in convincing Mouli to stay back? Let's wait and watch

Negativity getting popular on small screen

Negativity getting popular on small screen
Varun Badola and Gulki Joshi in Phir Subah Hogi
Negativity is ever popular on television. Good girls turning bad, bad boys, Wicked mothers-in-law and the scheming ex-girlfriends; villains and vamps are always the ones who stay etched in minds even after a show gets over. But so much is the acceptance of these negative characters with the audience that these days, even the actors who started off on a positive note are turning evil on screen.

Whether the demand is of The Script or audiences', there are a number of positive characters who have recently turned khalnayaks and are enthralling audiences with their newly acquired shades of grey. Some such characters who are now playing the baddie's role include Rajini (Shrenu Parikh in Byah Humari Bahu Ka), Jagya (Shashank Vyas in Balika Vadhu), Pradeep (Pawan Shankar in Kya Huaa TeraVaada), Ayesha Kapoor (Chahat Khanna in Bade Achche Laggte Hain), Thakur Vikram Singh(Varun Badola Phir Subah Hogi), Shamsher Malik (Bhupinder Singh in Madhubala — Ek Ishq Ek Junoon).
So is it the popular audience demand that leads to a twist in the storyline and a dramatic change in the character's image? Producer JD Majethia of Byah... says, "From day one people had predicted the story of the show based on its title. But we wanted to have an element that cannot be predicted, some surprise. A curiosity factor, an element of suspense is important. Moreover, a makeover of their favourite characters is loved by people. Rajini's negativity adds spice to her character and a new dimension to the story." Sometimes the flow of the story is such that a character has to swing between positive and negative shades. Actor Mouli Ganguly says, "Anushka is a go-getter; but she is not negative. She put in everything and made an effort to make the relationship work. Pradeep feels that if he has another relationship, it is okay, but he can't see his ex-wife with another man."
An edgy drama with twists and turns keeps viewers hooked to a show, but how do actors react to their image makeover on screen? Shashank Vyas says, "I am really enjoying my work now because there are so many shades that I get to portray in this show. Playing this mean guy with spicy stuff is interesting and challenging." Well, the love-hate relationship existing between characters is what makes these actors swing between positive and negative on screen. But the new baddies are adding a fresh perspective to the story and are grabbing more eyeballs.

TOI: Iconic characters on television are dead
Seema Sinha, TNN | Nov 8, 2012, 12.00AM IST

Iconic characters on television are dead
Smriti Irani

Years may have passed since they last appeared on screen, but some television characters are still fresh in public memory. They have become iconic and we remember them only by their screen names.

Here are some examples: Khopdi (Nukkad), Basesar, Nanhe and Chhutki (Hum Log) and Lajoji (Buniyaad) in the 80s'; Mihir and Tulsi Virani ( Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi), Parvati (Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) and Prerna and Rishabh Bajaj (Kasautii Zindagii Kay) in the recent past. "Even after a decade, people still call me Mihir Virani," says Amar Upadhyay, who played the role. But how many telly characters today have made such an impact? Well, not many.
Samir Soni may be a popular face, particularly after his appearance on Bigg Boss last season, but his character, Kunal, in Parichay Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka, hasn't established an identity even after a year. "These days, we have more drama-driven shows rather than character-driven ones. One fine day, there is a 20-year time leap, but even the clothes do not change. Anything happens. The mother looks younger than the daughter. The audience can't relate to such characters and forget their names," says Samir.
Agrees producer Rajan Shahi, "In most cases, the characters, their looks, acting style and costumes are similar. When you cannot differentiate, there is no recall value. Today, we don't discuss characters." Anas Rashid, who plays Sooraj in Diya Aur Baati Hum, says, "We are killing characters to generate TRPs. Iconic characters on TV are dead."
Producer Ekta Kapoor blames superficial characters for the problem. "My earlier shows like Kyunki... and Kahaani...had a lot of drama, but people still remembered the characters. These days, the characters are usually superficial. Also, the shows don't run very long," she says. "Today, there are many channels and shows. When they see Samir in Parichay..., they identify him with Bigg Boss. After Manav and Archana in Pavitra Rishta, none of Ekta's characters became popular," says Anas.
According to Rajan, characters played by actors who debut in landmark shows become popular as they don't carry any baggage. "Parul Chauhan and Sara Khan became popular as Ragini and Sadhana, respectively, their characters' names in Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai. Mona Singh is identified as Jassi from Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, though she did many shows after that," he says. "It was easy for me to replace Mohnish Behl with Sharad Kelkar in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, because the character of Dr Ashutosh was larger than the actor," he adds.
Larger-than-life characters are more memorable, says actress Sakshi Tanwar, who played Parvati in Kahaani... and currently plays Priya in Bade Achhe Laggte Hain. "The attention an actor got from a single character is divided now — the same actor can be seen in reality shows and various news-based programmes. This makes the audience get to know the actor as a person. This was not possible 10 years ago, when actors had to make public appearances in their screen avatars. Once, when I was playing Parvati, I went out in a T-shirt and jeans and people were shocked. But this time, I visited Lalbaug Ganpati as Sakshi and not Priya Kapoor (her character in Bade...)," says Sakshi.

TOI: High voltage drama ruling at small screen
By Shruti Jambhekar, TNN | Nov 17, 2012, 12.00 AM IST

High voltage drama ruling at small screen

It's daily soaps that add much froth to the small screen. And an element of drama has always been a part of soaps to keep the viewers glued to the screen. But it has gone a notch higher as it's 'high-voltage' drama happening across for General Entertainment Channels (GECs). Spice it up and grab more eyeballs — that's the mantra GECs swear by to survive in a highly competitive TRP battle. And this time it's going to be tough as the spotlight is on December 19, 2012 when the cumulative TRPs for straight eight weeks will be out. And to get the maximum mileage, all the producers and channels are leaving no stone unturned.

Talk of any show, be it Diya Aur Baati Hum where the main track of Suraj supporting Sandhya's career interest is being worked out, Balika Vadhu's Anandi and Shiv's wedding spinning out twist and turns, Madhubala where RK's ex-flame will try to woo him, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? where Khushi gets to know Aarav is Arnav's son, Pavitra Rishta's Manav and Archana's conflict with her sister to have their son back, or Mona and Pradeep's divorce issue in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada and lots more. All the shows are in a mad rush to make it more racy, spicy and gripping.

Ask the soap makers about the need for adding so much of drama? Producer Rajan Shahi shares, "Drama is important for any daily soap. And in any daily soap, there's a high point after every few weeks for the ongoing track — also, there is a lot of excitement in the air during the festive season, hence high drama. Drama, conflicts, and problems in protagonists' lives are the obvious things to be portrayed in any story."

Agrees producer Saurabh Tewari. "Currently, it is the last quarter of the year — so the performance will decide on the survival and future of any show. New shows will be taken up by channels after this quarter end. Moreover, during festive season, one needs strong storylines to hold people's interest."

So, is by any chance the cumulative TRPs of eight weeks the reason to this dramatic situation in daily soaps? Producer Sudhir Sharma says, "I don't think cumulative TRPs is the only reason. Viewers love their share of drama in soaps and new tracks are introduced from time to time. It enhances the pace of storyline and since no TRPs are coming, most producers are now experimenting. TRPs will indicate what audiences loved and what they ignored. Since weekly TRPs are not coming now, tracks are being worked out on a longer term basis."

Shahi shares, "Collective TRPs are not a reason for high drama because our stories are planned out a couple of months in advance, so this was all of a sudden decision from TAM India and that doesn't bring in any change in content for us."

Though it is clearly visible that cumulative TRPs are the anxiety factor for channels and producers (hence the drama effect). The TRPs will surely tell on December 19 who's winning the battle in the end.

TOI: Mona & Vineet call off engagement in Kya Huaa!
By Purva Desai, TNN | Nov 19, 2012, 12.27 PM IST

Tonight on Balaji Telefilms' Kya Huaa Tera Vaada on Sony Entertainment Television, Mona and Anushka register for the annual cake baking competition. Anushka who lost the competition the previous year determines to win it this time, in order to win over Bulbul's affection.

Meanwhile, Vineet's (Darshan Pandya) mother tries to poison his mind against Mona ( Mona Singh) but does not succeed. Vineet realizes he has been unfair to Mona and decides to apologize to her by cheering her up at the cake baking competition.

Mallika (Ekta Saraiya) who is Mona's arch enemy helps Anu (Mauli Ganguly) by sneaking in a cake from outside. But this attempt fails too as the judges notice the cake shop sticker on Anu's cake. Mona is declared the winner and both Pradeep (Pawan Shankar) and Vineet clap enthusiastically for her.

In the coming episodes, Anu will accuse the judges for their faulty scoring but is taken aback when the judges reveal that she's bought the cake from Roshan cake shop. On the other hand, Mona and Pradeep meet the lawyer who quotes a whopping amount of 5 lacs per court appearance. Pradeep looks worried while Mona says she is ready to pay the fees.

While things are going rough for the two, Taani (Priya Chauhan) is happy as Tarun proposes to her in front of everyone. Mona is prodded by Jha to cut off from Vineet till the case reaches its conclusion! Both Mona and Pradeep are shocked. Mona finally confronts Vineet and tells him Jha's decision and to her surprise he agrees by telling Mona they should call off the engagement.

But Vineet is only trying to buy time and fool the world so that the prosecution guys will not get suspicious. He further tells her that she can work as a normal employee in his office. When contacted, Darshan Pandya aka Vineet confirmed the track. "Yes it's true. This is a temporary adjustment to save Pradeep. There is a feeling of insecurity that is going on in Vineet's mind as eh realizes that Mona is going towards Pradeep. But Vineet also knows that this has to be done in order to support Mona".

In a turn of events, Anushka poisons the mind of the society by calling Pradeep a criminal. When Mona and Pradeep finally appear in court for their hearing, Anushka accuses Pradeep and says he was present in the room when Shaurya (Chetan Hansraj) was murdered. Mona comes to Pradeep's defence by saying he was with her the whole night!

The judge embarrasses Mona by questioning Pradeep's integrity and adjourns the session by declaring a future day for the next hearing. Tarun is eagerly awaiting his mother's arrival who is none other than Debashree (Nandini Sen), Anu's mom!

In a dramatic sequence of events, will Tarun turn out to be Anu sibling and will this affect Tanni's marriage?

TB: Women characters on TV who are moping over lost love
Tuesday, November 20, 2012 | 8:20:00 PM IST (+05:30 GMT)

There was a time when on Indian TV women were expected to go back to the husband who wronged her. However nowadays we do see women characters moving on with their lives after lost love but not completely..

In Bigg Boss Season 6 we see a very dignified Delnaaz Irani telling her former husband Rajev Paul who is desperately trying to win her back that it's all over. Delnaz is in fact well-liked by both the inmates Bigg Boss house and also the viewers to the extent that she is one of the likely candidates to win the game. In reality many viewers are appreciating a woman moving on instead of moping on lost love. So why do we in our serials often find it 'romantic' when we see a woman pining over lost love?

In the yesteryears on TV we would see the 'pious' wife fasting for the unfaithful husband who was in the company of 'the other woman'. He would forget anniversaries and Karva Chauth only to return home late at night and mistreat his wife. The wife was expected to tolerate the abuse and go on forgiving the infidel husband.

However over the years things have become far less regressive on TV. In 2008, it was refreshing when we watched the promo of Jaane Kya Baat Hui on Colors in which the protagonist Aradhana (essayed by Sweta Tiwari) indignantly said that society surely has double standards for letting off men lightly for the same offence for which they will harshly reprimand women. She was referring to infidelity in this case. The serial concluded with the unfaithful husband reforming himself and both being a happily married couple again. Though this ending went down well with viewers who are conditioned to prefer marriages finally working out; there were viewers who felt that in real life often the husband doesn't reform unlike what is depicted in shows.

In 2012, in Balika Vadhu on Colors we see Anandi all ready to marry Shiv whom she loves and respects. The writer Purnendu Shekhar however agrees that deep down she still has a soft corner for her former husband Jagya. He explains, "It is not easy for a traditional Indian woman to forget her first love, especially her childhood love." He however stands by the fact that what Jagya has done was very wrong. It has been a refreshing change to see Anandi with all her rationality choosing Shiv over Jagya. Siddharth Shukla who plays Shiv says, "A man shouldn't take a woman for granted as that's not the correct way of treating her. Anandi has realized her self-worth and will let no man walk over her self-respect." It's a very positive sign that the majority of india-forums.com viewers want to see Shiv and Anandi's story instead of Anandi and Jagya's story.

In Qubool Hai on Zee TV Dilshad essayed by Shalini Kapoor Sagar still has feelings for her former husband Rashid Ahmed Khan essayed by Vaquar Shaikh. It is but natural for a wife who after all shares two children with her former husband not to completely forget the father of her kids. It was indeed a somber moment when Dilshad mournfully tells her son Asad (essayed byKaran Singh Grover) that she is upset as she still doesn't know because of what 'mistake' her husband left her even after all these years.  Nevertheless she keeps a dignified distance from her husband. Shalini explains, "She is very dignified lady, she takes the fact that her husband had left her with a pinch of salt. She has brought up her kids single-handedly really well. She wishes to maintain her self esteem and silence. There is a lot of resentment and pain in her."

It's a very progressive sign that on Indian television shows on remarriage are gaining popularity. Aakanksha Singh who plays Megha on Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha on Colorssays, "It was initially difficult for Megha to move on after her dear husband Amar's death. Though she was realizing that she loved Mohan in fact as much as he loved her, she was in denial mode for a while." The happily married Megha and Mohan are now a favourite onscreen couple not only on india-forums.com but also in India.

In Kya Huaa Tera Vaada on Sony TV, the protagonist Mona (played by Mona Jaswir Singh) is engaged to Vinit (essayed by Darshan Pandya) yet having some feelings for her former husband Pradeep Singh (essayed by Pawan Shankar). Vinit however refuses to accept this leading to a distance brewing in their relationship. He doesn't even like it when Mona calls her former husband to discuss essential matters regarding their kids. Pawan Shankar explains, "In the Indian scenario women like Mona are the pillars of the family institution and so it is difficult to forget the bond."  Will Mona finally go back to the same husband who had left her for another woman? Pawan replies, "The producer of the show can answer better. I doubt."

In Bade Acche Laggte Hai on Sony TV Ram Kapoor (essayed by Ram Kapoor) and Priya (essayed by Saakshi Tanwar) are still deeply in love. Yet Ram refuses to admit it as is often brusque with her. The green eyed monster in him is also instigated when Priya uses her maiden name Priya Sharma and is in the company of Rajat Kapoor. Priya however still isn't taking her relationship forward with Rajat as she prefers doing Karva Chauth for Ram. Priya's mother-in-law Krsihnaji also encouraged Priya to maintain a fast when Ram is yet to verbally express that he accepts her as his lawfully wedded wife. Samir Kochhar who plays Rajat on the show explains, "There is still an attachment between Ram and Priya which is why she kept the fast."

The most refreshing deviation from this on contemporary Indian TV is perhaps Dil se di dua.Saubhagyavati Bhava?Sriti Jha who plays Sia/ Jahnavi told us, "Jahnavi finally walked out of an abusive marriage. When a husband has the habit of beating his wife regularly, this behavior pattern can't really be changed. It's important for the wife to walk out on him- that is exactly what we achieved on our show. This makes our show different from the rest as in other shows the wife often stays on in a marriage like this. When Jahnavi walked out of the marriage she got a new name Sia with which she also got a new identity. She also married Raghav. Even when Viraj (her former abusive husband) injected her with poison saying that he would give her the antidote only if she said that he loved her; she refused to do so and said that she loved Raghav and hated him."

In marriage vows you promise to love and honour your spouse till death do part. We conclude here that women on Indian TV should surely abide by this but only if their husbands also treat them with love and honour. If the husband treats the wife with cruelty and disrespect; it is no sin to walk out and get herself a partner she truly deserves. However if there has been mutual love and respect in the marriage like it had been in Sia and Raghav's marriage, it's romantic to be in love like Sia till you take your last breath.

Was out of work in between: Darshan Pandya
Darshan Pandya
Darshan Pandya who plays Mona's love interest in Balaji Telefilms' Kya Huaa Tera Vaada has seen rough patches in his career. Darshan was popular for the role he played in the serial, Aapki Antara.

But Darshan struggled in between. Says the actor, "After Aap Ki Antara, I was getting a few roles. But I had already portrayed those on screen. I was out of work in between. I wanted to do something different because I was being offered the same roles. I would rather take up a 9-5 job. That was a tough period for me. I was dubbing and doing plays. Luckily I was not so greedy, so I could survive".

The actor has been wanting to play a lead role but is happy playing Vineet in KHTV. "I have got more visibility through the show and general audiences are appreciating me. But what I'm the happiest about is that industry people are liking my work and that holds a different meaning. That appreciation is special. We all actors are insecure and we have to approach people for work. It happens to all. If the show does well on air, then you are liked. The minute it goes off air, no one cares".

'Kya Hua Tera Vaada' will take a leap soon
Kya Hua Tera Vaada
Buzz is that after Bade Ache Lagte Hai, the next popular tele soap to take a leap is Kya Hua Tera Vaada. Channel sources confirmed that the leap will take place around mid-December.

Chloe Ferns, creative director of the show, said, "We are still in the discussion phase." Pawan Shankar, who plays Pradeep Singh in the show said, "I have also heard rumours, but haven't got any official confirmation as of yet." And is he willing to be a part of the show after it takes the leap? "Maybe not. But it depends on the story. Earlier, the story revolved around Pradeep and his extramarital affair. If the story still revolves around us, I might consider."

Mona Singh and Ekta Kapoor remained unavailable for comment.
