"Drunk-driver in incredible escape after 6ft wooden post smashes through windscreen"

"Drunken pensioner crashed into two cars"

"Pensioner dies after she is hit by lorry"

"Woman and nine month old daughter run over by bus"

These are some headlines we read so often in newspapers, articles, on the TV, yet how much do we actually do, to prevent such mishaps from taking place? Not Enough!

After a recently tragic accident, which took place in Manchester, the CC team decided we need to bring to everyone's attention the importance of our safety on the road and highlight such tragic cases in a thread, and here we are today introducing one of the most important threads we have made til date:

The idea behind this thread is to inform you how serious road safety is... we are taught the basic safety measures from an early age from parents and school but just how much of this teaching do we actually put into practice when on the road? Not many, because if we did, the statistics of road collisions would tell a different picture;

  •  Over 1.2 million people die in road accidents and between 20 and 50 million people get injured every year around the globe.
  • Over 90% of accident deaths occur in low and middle income countries. And these countries only account for 48% of the world's vehicles.
  • 50% of people who die in road accidents are pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike users.

  • The estimated cost of accidents to governments world wide is $518 billion.
  • Globally, more than half of the total accidents that occur are with drivers between the age of 15 and 44 years, and the drivers in more than 73% of cases are males
  • Research shows that most of the accidents occur due to reckless driving and intoxication. In the US, about 70 to 80 people die every day due to accidents related to alcohol.

1. Intoxication

Many accidents are caused by drivers who are intoxicated from alcohol or drugs.

2. Bad Weather

The weather can cause bad visibility or cause bad traction on the road surface which can lead to vehicles colliding with each other.

3. Driver Error

Probably the largest cause of road traffic accidents currently is driver error. These range from following cars too closely, falling asleep at the wheel, driving too fast, unsafe overtaking and many other careless and unnecessary mistakes.

4. Distractions

This is linked to driver error but is more about the driver being distracted by something outside the car or inside the car such as changing cds and looking at your mobile phone etc

5. Road Design

This is when a part of the road or traffic control has been poorly placed or designed and can lead to increased accidents in the area. This could be anything from poorly placed signs blocking your view of incoming traffic at intersections to dangerous turnings off of busy roads.

6. Vehicle defects

Sometimes a road traffic accident will be caused by a defect in the driver's vehicle i.e. brake failure.

NOTE: We have decided to eliminate the horrifying details from the cases because they are extremely distressing. These are some of the millions of cases which take place every year.

"Seven Dead as Van Plunges into Bronix Zoo"

Location: US
Victims of Accident: 7 people including 3 children aged under 16 years.
Reason of Accident: High Speed

The van was believed to have been travelling at a high rate of speed and hit something on the road which caused the driver to lose control over the van. As a result, the van drove off the road and plunged more than 100ft into Bronix Zoo. Police said it flipped over the rail and then landed upside down causing all passengers to die.

"Man convicted for stealing handbag and shoes while women lay dead after fail-to-stop accident"

Location: UK
Victim of accident: 62 year old lady
Reason of Accident: Hit-Run...Fail-to-Stop crash

Sarvari Ashraf was crossing the road to attend her routine appointment at the hospital when she was struck by a lorry, after which 6 other cars went over her body making her it impossible for the police to retrieve all parts of her body during the investigation (her brain is believed to have been stuck on the wall of Tesco plc.)

One witness tweeted: "Just saw possibly the most disturbing thing of my life cycling along Upper Brook Street. Keep an eye out on the news, too bad to tweet it."

A man (caught on CCTV camera) picked up her handbag and shoes while her body parts lay on the road being ignored by heavy traffic.

"Child & pregnant woman killed in car accident"

Location: Kyoto, Japan
Victims of accident: 10 including 1 pregnant woman
Reason for accident: Careless driving by unlicensed driver

A primary school girl (Mao) and a 7-month pregnant mother (Yukihi) were killed when they and 8 other children were hit by a mini vehicle on their way to the local school. Two children remained unconscious while the other 6 were seriously injured.

The unlicensed driver was suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel which caused the accident. Reports reveal, that there were no road signs available and people have urged the government to introduce more road signs for effective road safety.

I'm sure you are all moved when you hear about the tragic accidents that happen on the roads...innocent lives are lost every day because of someone's carelessness either the driver's or the victim's themselves...

So don't you think it's time we actually did something about it??... lets all do our own bit and make the roads a safer place for ourselves and everybody around us... here are some basic safety measures we all should follow...they are pretty straightforward yet very few put these into practice...

  • Find a safe place to cross the road: zebra, pelican and traffic light crossings are ideal. If you can't find a proper crossing then make sure you can see clearly along the roads in both directions and that drivers can see you clearly.
  •

  • DO NOT cross on sharp bends, before the top of a hill or walk out from a row of parked cars. Take plenty of time to look around for traffic before you step out, and listen carefully in case something's coming that you can't see from where you're standing.
  •

  • When you cross the road make sure you're concentrating! It's easy to get distracted if you're listening to music on your headphones, or chatting and texting on your mobile.
  •

    • ALWAYS keep your eyes on the road whilst driving, look around and be aware of Hazards.

  • NEVER exceed the national speed limit of the road! Research shows that many accidents take place where drivers were driving at excessive speed limits.
  •

  • NEVER drink and drive!
  •

REMEMBER!When on the road, you are NOT only putting your OWN life at risk, but OTHERS too, hence take extra care.
