Riya Mukherjee stormed out of the ETF headquarters towards the parking lot. What does he think of himself? Yes, she had been in the hospital a day ago, but that didn't give him any right to tell her that she wasn't going to be a part of this case just because she didn't have a goddamn certificate of approval from the doctor! Since when was ACP Arjun I-don't-believe-in-rules Raute so hell bent on going by the book? Even Rathore Sir was ready to let her work and he had to go and remind him of the rules?

The ETF Research Specialist took in a deep breath to contain her anger, but alas, her anger being as stubborn as her heart, decided to show itself in form of little tears in the corner of her eyes. Once her tears were out, her anger was replaced by acute hurt at being treated this way by him. Him. Arjun Suryakant Raute. The man she had tried to move on from, for the past one year! But her treacherous heart denied her each time she tried. Because each time Riya Mukherjee tried to forget that she had inadvertently and hopelessly fallen in love with a man who probably ranked minus in the emotional quotient, she was reminded of a man who was struggling with himself, a man who tried so hard to hide his good intentions that he almost came across as a lifeless person. Almost.

Riya didn't know why she loved him. She hated how he behaved with her, always so bereft, always so rude. She hated how he constantly undermined her capabilities. She hated how he was always so angry at her, always finding reasons to show her down. She hated how he hated her. But most of all, Riya Mukerjee was utterly and hopelessly in love with her boss!

Maybe, she was a masochist of a kind. But there was something so vulnerable about this broken man, Riya felt an inherent need to protect him, to help him fight his demons and to help him unburden himself of his oh so heavy and mighty baggage. No, she didn't want to be a Messiah. She just wanted some love from a person who she had tried so hard to forget only to fail in the effort.

Riya slumped in the driver's seat of her car and pressed her head against the steering wheel not caring for the wound on her head. She let her tears fall freely then. Maybe this really wasn't meant to be. Maybe, she was hoping for the impossible and maybe it was time for her to really try to move on.

Once she had cried until she could no more, Riya picked herself up. She noticed the red liquid on her steering wheel and cursed aloud. The wound on her head needed a re-dressing. Maybe, she should go to the hospital and get the wound dressed and get the doctor to sign that she was now fit for work. No, she wasn't letting anybody tell her that she wasn't capable of taking up a case just because she had been hurt during their last case, even if that anybody was the man she...Stop Riya! Yes, she had to get over it and gear herself up for the job she was so passionate about.

Her firm resolve seemed to falter the moment her eyes met with eyes she could recognise anywhere in the world. There in front of her, stood the tormentor of heart in all his glory. She felt her decision to try and move on from him falter a little, but she decided to collect her elements before she did anything stupid. She looked down and wiped the tears out of her eyes. When she looked back, he was still staring at her with an intensity that burned a hole through her heart. It was probably these mind-body-soul burning stares that had pulled her down from her gracious self to a woman mourning over unreciprocated love. God help her, he didn't even have to try to look hot! Riya inwardly cursed herself for her wayward thoughts before she put up a strong front and honked her car to make her intentions clear. Her knees might've been wobbly and there might've been a tight knot in her stomach, but Riya Mukherjee wasn't about to show him any sign of weakness.

She was about to honk again, when he moved out of her way. Before she could pull the ignition though, he was at her side, opening the door of her car. Seriously? What did the man think of himself? How dare he? She was about to grant verbal relief to her thoughts added with a few harmless expletives, when Arjun thought it was okay to pull her out of the car by her arm.

"What the hell? What do you think you're doing, Sir?" She tried to keep the anger from her voice, but she didn't think she succeeded. When he just starred at her, she continued further, "You think you can --" she bellowed out loud only to be cut off by him, "You're bleeding," he said as a matter of fact.

"Your excellent observational skills astound me, Sir," Riya muttered sarcastically and snatched her arm away from his hold.

"Riya!" He shouted, and she didn't know if he did that because of the tone she had used on him or because she had ruthlessly snatched her arm away from his hold. And from the looks of it, neither did he. Not that Riya couldn't do harsh and tough; she was an excellent martial artist, but she could do with some gentleness right now, and the way he had held her was sure to leave some marks on her otherwise flawless skin. She rubbed her arm absentmindedly. Was that concern she saw on his face? Of course not! Riya don't be disillusioned. It's time for you to move on. Her conscience berated her.

Riya sighed before she decided to answer to the loud call to her name, "What do you want, Sir?" She asked him, trying to keep her hurt and anger out of her voice.

Arjun was at a compete loss of words. What was he to say? That he had come running behind her to check on her after she had stormed out of the office? That he couldn't contain his anger at himself when he saw blood dripping out of her dressing? That a tight knot of hurt had formed in his gut when she had snatched her arm away from his hold? Those answers couldn't be good for his sanity. Nope. Definitely not.

She saw him take a step back from her, and move towards the other side of the parking lot to his car. He opened the door and brought out the first aid kit from the car drawer before he walked back to her. Riya scoffed at the attempt. The man seriously needed some lessons in humility and modesty.

"Thanks a lot, Sir. But I think I can manage this on my own. I should leave now since I'm not wanted here anyway," she said and turned to open the door of her car. But he had the audacity to close the door back again and that had her flared.

"What the hell do you want?" She shouted out loud enough for the watchman on the other end of the parking lot to stare at both them. One stare from Arjun though, and the watchman walked away probably to a place where he couldn't hear them again.

Then he looked at her and replied in a straight voice, "Firstly, don't, I repeat, don't ever talk to me in that tone again. It would do you good to remember that I'm your senior. Secondly, I'm going to take you to the hospital now and then drop you home, because as your boss, I'm supposed to make sure you don't do anything stupid, like drive a car with a concussion on the head or let your wound bleed." That being said, he was holding her by her wrist, this time his hold firm but achingly gentle, and walking her to his car. She wanted to say something. Something, anything, but words failed to form in her mouth as she gaped at the back of his head. Maybe she could've told him that she had driven her car on her way to work and she might as well do that now, but his tone, his demeanour and the way he held her hand didn't let her. Instead she obediently sat inside the car as he pulled the door open for her.

This was the exact reason why Riya hadn't been able to get over him. This, what he had just done to her...dragged her like he had every right to do so...like she was his...Stop reading more into simple actions, Riya. It would probably do you some good. Her subconscious brought her back to reality.

Sigh. What had she ever done to deserve this? Why did she have to fall for a man who could never understand how he was affecting her? Why did she have to love this man who probably didn't have a single ounce of respect for her? Why couldn't she just hate him for the way he treated her. Something had to be really wrong with her to fall for him.

Riya stared outside from the window into the grey concrete parking lot. Just then, his touch on her chin startled her. He was pulling her head to face him. Before Riya could question anything, he brought a Savlon-dipped cotton to the wound on her head and wiped the blood that was now trickling to the side of her face.

He was abnormally close to her. This close, she could see each and every line on his face. Only if she could touch his face, the jet black eyes, the perfect cheekbones, the light stubble that grazed his face giving him the rugged look. Oh why did the Almighty have to be so kind to this man! Her heart was racing and breaking at the same time. She was completely off the hook by this nearness, but he seemed unfazed. Apart from the permanent frown he wore on his face, Arjun looked like he did every other day: khadoos!

The rejection brought resentment along with it for free. Her eyes filled with tears and the harder she tried to not show her tears, the more difficult it got to control herself. She really couldn't help the sob that escaped her. The sound distracted him from the wound that he was trying to fix before he could take her to the hospital. When Arjun looked at her eyes, he was thrown off guard. Tears, there were tears in her eyes and Arjun shuddered at the searing pain that he felt in the estranged organ inside his chest.

"Riya..." He managed to whisper before she brought her left arm between them and pushed his arm that was dressing her wound, down. She turned her face away and wiped her tears. In the most unemotional voice that she could manage to utter, she asked him, "Shall we go now? Or should I take my car myself? I don't want to be a burden on you when you should be investigating a case that I'm not fit enough to be a part of."

He looked straight ahead not meeting her eyes. His next words surprised her. "I took the day off. Rathore has the case covered. There's nothing much to do after we busted the criminal last night."

What? Really? They'd already busted the criminal? Is that why he told her "to go back home and rest because delicate darlings like her needed the rest"? And when she had refused, he had played the "certificate of approval" card. And she had stormed out. Riya knew the man couldn't do sweet. But he didn't have to be so callous. All the hurt could've been avoided had he not been so hell bent upon finding reasons to prove that she was not good enough for the Emergency Task Force. Riya felt irrational anger plague her head which was starting to hurt now. This didn't change anything. He didn't love her and that was a given.

He turned on the ignition and she prayed the lord that the ride get over soon; the tension between them could be cut with a knife.

He knew he was the reason that the fiesty Riya Mukherjee had been reduced to tears. He knew somewhere he was responsible for all that pain and he cursed himself for being so unkind to her when in practise, he was proud of Riya. He didn't know why then, was he scared to show her how much he admired her courage and her passion towards work. And what was that he felt when she refused to let him dress her wound? God knew, Arjun had been dealing with these questions ever since he had met Riya. She confused him and forced him to deal with things slash feelings he didn't remotely want to be associated with. That was probably the reason, he was always so angry at her.

Arjun pulled the car in front of the hospital. She got out so fast, Arjun thought she was probably repulsed by him. He swallowed the lump in his throat and got out of the car.

"Sir, thank you for driving me. I think I can manage further on my own. I'll take a taxi back home," Riya told him just when he was about to follow her into the hospital.

"Why don't you stop hurting your head too much and let me do the thinking part?" he said in a no-nonsense tone. He walked past her towards the hospital, but when she didn't follow him, he turned around and gave her the trademark Arjun look that had the entire ETF cowered. Riya quietly followed him inside.

Once out from the doctor's, after the re-dressing her wound and fetching the certificate of approval, she was forced back into his car. If he said he would drop her home, he meant it. He pulled over outside her house.

He suddenly seemed to remember that the car ride was over and so was his time with her. But she had been eerily quiet throughout this whole ride and it upset Arjun. It was because of him, he was the reason that she was hurt...

"Thank you," she murmured before trying to open the door only to find it child locked. She looked at him inquisitively and he shrugged. She tried to open the door once again to no avail.

When she looked at him increduously, he spoke, "Why were you crying Riya?"

If she was surprised by the question, she didn't show it, "The wound...on my head...it was hurting, that's all,"she lied through her teeth.

"Only the truth, Riya," he said angered. His tone got her enraged too. He didn't have any right to ask her that question!

"Why do you care, SIR? " She challenged.

When he had no answer to her question she said in an emotionless tone, "Thank you for everything" and bent towards his side to disable the child lock. Arjun sat there paralysed as she stormed out of the car towards her house leaving him staring at her retreating back.

She had only just calmed her erratically beating heart, and her anger, and was about to rationalise her behaviour with him, when the doorbell cut into her thoughts. She sighed loudly and opened the door only to be shocked.

And just like that she was pushed to the adjacent wall, and his lips crashed down upon hers. She was shocked, was the understatement of the century. Here was the man of her dreams, the man she had longed for, day and night, the man she thought she could never have, kissing her like there was no tomorrow. She felt paralysed, her palms fisting at her side. His hands snaked around her waist and smoothly rubbed her waist, coaxing her to return the kiss. Riya felt her lips automatically move and grant him an entry. She let him have his way with her because frankly all the voluntary processes had been zapped from her body. She couldn't think and she didn't want to. It was exhilarating, whatever was happening, it was out of the world. Her heart was doing over time and her knees would've given up long back had he not been holding her by her waist. She felt his hands move up, and cup her cheeks. It was overwhelming, how he was making her feel. Riya couldn't control the tears that escaped her eyes.

He pulled back when he felt her tears on his cheeks. Looking into her eyes with assurance and trying to catch his breath, he wiped her tears off. Her eyes flashed a thousand emotions and she looked into his eyes inquisitively as to what had brought this moment of passion. He simply whispered, "This is why."

Riya looked confused before she realised he was answering her question as to why he cared. She looked into his eyes, surprised, still not believing what had just happened. He smiled at her surprised and shocked expression before kissing her cheek and turned around to walk away. But before he could walk out of the door, he turned back and said, "Samjhe ya samjhaoun?"

Her flushed face and the slight smile that had formed on her face as her mind processed the situation was an answer enough. She ran towards him and threw herself in his arms before speaking the words that she had never thought she'd be able to tell him, "I love you, Sir."
