The proper usage should really be "Southern Indian" not "South Indian".

South being technically a noun form, is used when it is part of the name itself (example : South Korea, South America, etc).

To indicate the southern part of a place, correct usage should be "Southern Indian".

Of course, it is very common to use "South Indian" but grametically not correct in my opinion.
