Deepavali is one the biggest and brightest festivals
celebrated by us indians ... In sanskrit it means
The Array Of Lights

"Thamasomaa jyotirgamaya" (Lead me from darkness to light)
is a Upanishadic prayer: This means that where there is darkness
light is needed. Sorrow,Peacelessness, Loss , Disappointment ,
Misery &  Lack of enthusiasm. All these are different forms of darkness.
To dispel the darkness from life, we have to usher in the light of prosperity
.

The belief and the myth are different in different
regions but the motto remains universal. Its a way of symbolically
"Enlightening  life with the ray  of hope & knowledge"

Historically, the origin of Diwali  can be traced back to ancient India,
when it was probably an important harvest festival.
There are various legends pointing to the origin
 of Diwali or 'Deepawali.'

However as per the legend in South India it is being followed
as the day Sri Krishna killed the demon Narakasura.
Some communities believe that when Narakasur was to be killed,
Lord Krishna asked him his last wish. Narakasura replied
hat he wanted to enjoy the last day of his life in a grand manner and
Deepavali was celebrated.
That was the beginning and the practice continued.

It is celebrated in the Tamil month of aipasi (thula month)
'naraka chaturdasi' thithi, preceding amavasai( new moon day).
The preparations begin the day before,
when the oven is cleaned, smeared with lime, four or five
kumkum dots are applied, and then it is filled with water
for the next day's oil bath. The house is washed and decorated
with kolam (rangoli) patterns with kavi (red oxide).

In the pooja room, betel leaves, betel nuts, plaintain fruits,
flowers, sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder,
scented powder are kept. Crackers and new dresses are
laced in a plate after smearing a little kumkum or sandal paste.
The day begins with an early morning oil bath, wearing new
clothes, bursting of crackers, visiting  temples. The exchange of
sweets between the neighbours, visiting the relations,
exchanging Deepavali special sweets are tradition of the day.
The most important value here is the
Union of Families

Beautiful Rangoli designs a joyful way
to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity
on this beautiful auspicious day

The burnings of small lamps
symbolize knowledge or one's inner light, which brings
 about inner peace and fights
off any traces of darkness and ignorance

Light some fireworks and firecrackers
to symbolize warding off evil from your surroundings.

Not to forget delicious cookies, sweets and foods
prepared with lots of love and happiness ...
