Chapter Seventeen – The Pale Face
A few days passed. Madhu and I had gotten a bit more comfortable with each other. We slept in the same bed with the pillow wall between us of course.
She would serve me chai in the morning. I would help her with anything she needed. Well, almost anything.
We had both promised to forget the night of the party and the morning after.
Though I never really did forget it, I pretended to.
I feel as though she never forgot it either though.
And in a way, I believe that the party night managed to bring us closer, even though it did make us initially fight the morning after.
Then one day, I woke up later than usual because I was tired from shooting on set for long hours the previous day.
When I sat up, I saw Madhu walk into our room all ready.
"Where are you going?"
"I have to take ma to chemotherapy again RK."
"Oh…I'd come with you but I have to go to set in an hour."
"No problem, I'll be home before you are!"
"Don't remind me. I hate long hours."
She laughed as I sighed and sat up on the edge of our bed.
"Your chai is on the table beside you, and I'm late…soo…"
"Bye biwi."
"Bye!"
She turned and rushed out of the door. I turned to look at the chai waiting for me and I smiled.
I picked it up and sipped away at it while thinking about Madhu.
Her thoughts brought a smile to my face.
I remember being unable to wait for the perfect time to confess my feelings for her. I wanted to tell her. But I had to wait. Had to wait for her to fall for me too. So my plan changed. My plan was no longer to make her like me; it was to make her love me.
I went to shoot and returned home late at night.
I walked to my room and saw Madhu asleep already. It wasn't THAT late at night. It was only 8:30pm.
I walked towards her bedside and looked at her.
She looked…yellow almost…she was pale. She looked tired even though she was asleep.
I was about to wake her to check on her but before I could even touch her, her eyes opened slowly.
"RK?"
She spoke quietly and she seemed exhausted again.
She slowly, with a bit of trouble, managed to sit up.
I stared at her with a worried look and she noticed it.
She smiled.
"I'm okay RK. I just feel sick when I have to see ma going through treatment. I'm scared…"
I sat on the side of the bed beside her and held her hand.
She looked down at her hand a bit shocked and then up at me. I knew she couldn't believe that I was holding her hand, so I let her go.
I looked away and apologized quickly.
Then I suddenly felt her warm fingers around my hand.
"It's okay."
She smiled and spoke so softly and sweetly. I placed my other hand on top of hers.
"Sasuma will be fine."
"I know she will RK…"
"Then why are you scared?"
"I don't know."
"Biwi, then don't be scared. If you don't know why you're scared, there's no reason to be."
"You're right…"
"I always am."
I smirked and saw her smile at me once again.
"Now you get some rest. I'm quite tired myself from filming. I'm going to head to bed as well."
"Okay, goodnight RK."
She let go of my hand.
"Goodnight biwi."
I fixed her blanket and got up to go to bed myself.
