Chapter Fourteen ā The Fake Truth
Since I didn't sleep all night, even when I tried it was of no use; I decided to get up at around eight in the morning.
I got up and went to Madhu's bedside to check on her.
She seemed comfortable as she slept.
I smiled at her and then turned.
I knew she'd have a slight hangover, and I had heard that caffeine helped with that. So I went down to make her a cup of chai.
By the time I walked back to our room, she was already sitting in bed rubbing her head.
She heard me walk in and looked at me. She looked terribly tired. Her eyes were red, probably from the rubbing.
"I have the worst headache...what happā¦"
"We'll talk about that later."
I walked towards her with the chai and sat on the edge of the bed facing her as I had done last night.
The only difference was, that I knew this time she wasn't going to push herself into my arms.
I handed her the chai.
"I heard this helps."
"Thank yā¦wait, helps with what? What happened last night RK? Why don't I remember much from last night? It's all a blur. Why didn't I change? And why'd you sleep on the couā¦"
"Shhh. Just drink the chai. Your headache will lessen and then we can speak."
"Rkā¦Did you drink alcohol?!"
I realized that she smelled the alcohol off herself. After all, she was still in the same dress.
"Uhā¦Madhu just drink the chai."
"Did you just call me Madā¦"
"DRINK THE CHAI!"
She went silent as her eyes widened at my loud voice. She hadn't heard that in a few days and so I guessed that it startled her.
She put the cup to her lips and began sipping away as I sighed and put my hand to my head. I closed my eyes.
I was frustrated. Not because of her constant questions, but rather because I loved her and couldn't tell her. On top of that, I yelled at her.
"Everything okay RK?"
"I said drink."
I didn't look up at her but I felt her eyes on me.
"I'm doneā¦"
I looked up at her and took the cup from her hands. She watched me as I placed the tray on the bedside table.
I looked directly into her eyes and spoke.
"I'm about to tell you about last night. Before you freak out on me, listen to all I have to say."
She nodded her head. The fear in her eyes showed clearly. She looked scared, almost as if she didn't want to hear what happened last night.
"Your drinkā¦it was spiked andā¦"
"WHAT?! Iā¦"
"BIWI! I said listen!"
"Oh right, sorryā¦"
"There's nothing to worry about. You came to me in your drunk state and I brought you homeā¦thenā¦"
"Thenā¦?"
"Uhm, then I placed you in bed and you fell asleep. I slept on the couch because I wanted you to have the entire bed to yourself."
I lied. Why? Well, because I didn't want to hurt her. I know she had every right to know what happened between us. I myself was dying to burst out and tell her everything that took place between us. But the time was not right. She wasn't ready to hear the truth. I planned to tell her when the time was right.
She smiled at me, which kind of caught me off guard.
"Really?"
I was confused; I didn't know what she was asking.
"Really what?"
"You brought me home and put me to sleep?"
"Yeahā¦why wouldn't I?"
"I don't knowā¦justā¦thank you RK."
"Please, just stop thanking me. And yes, I just said please. So respect that."
Madhu slightly laughed which brought a smile to my face.
"You seemed tired last night, you alright now biwi?"
"Huh? I was tirā¦no, no I'm fine."
She spoke quickly but I believed her. She only looked hung-over, nothing more, nothing less.
"Okay, well you get rest. I have to go for shooting."
"Today?"
"Yeah? Why?"
"Ohā¦I just thought you got Mondays offā¦"
Yeah, I did get Mondays off. But how was I supposed to tell her that I wanted to leave the house to be far from her?
I looked at her and saw a look on her face, which seemed as if she was begging me to stay. So I just asked her straight out.
"Do you want me to stay?"
She looked at me for a second as though she were thinking of an answer. Then she looked away from me and down at her hands. She spoke nervously.
"I don't know."
"I can stay if you want me too."
"Do you have to go RK?"
"Wellā¦no."
"I just, I don't know, I need company right now."
"Lately you've been wanting a lot of company."
"I have?"
She looked at me with a guilty look. I didn't understand that look on her face.
"Yeahā¦first you ask me to sleep next to you and now you're asking me to stay home from shoot. Even last night you asked me not to leā¦"
"I asked you not to what?"
"Nothing."
"Fine. You can go. Just go. Sorrā¦"
"Too bad. Now I'm staying. Nothing can make me go."
She slightly smiled as I smiled at her.
Then my eyes fell onto the space between her shoulder and collarbone. I noticed the makeup had slightly rubbed off and the love mark was becoming somewhat visible.
I noticed her head move. She was just about to follow my eyes to her shoulder when I suddenly looked up at her.
Her eyes instantly locked with mine.
