Dabangg 2 Takes Juggernaut Opening

Friday 21st December 2012 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dabangg 2 has taken a juggernaut opening at the box office all across India. The single screens that open early are fantastic and when they open at large at noon it will be historic.

The multiplexes have also taken a record start with housefull shows across the board. Basically the opening of the film is at record pace but what normally happens on working days is that multiplexes start better as lower tickets rates but pace slackens slightly from noon and a bigger drop around around 4pm and they pick up again in the late evening while on the holidays the whole day remains superb.

The opening of the film has assured it the biggest weekend in history of Hindi cinema and that too by a distance.

Dabangg 2 Opening Day Collection Update. Morning Shows.

Dabangg 2 has taken a fantastic start at the box office on the Friday (First Day) as far as Morning Shows are concerned. As we have received the sample reports from selected mulitplexes opening is around 60-70% on average. This is excellent for the Morning Shows. Single Screen Report is still to receive. Also, whatever information we have for D2, it has taken around 70-80% opening in few leading single screens. So, on average around an occupancy of 65-70% is registered for D2 in the Morning Shows. This is huge considering today is a normal working day.

Mumbai and Gurgaon centers are rocking with huge occupancies are registered. Many Sold Outshows already. Delhi is little slow in comparison to above said centers, but it is still good with occupancy of around 50%.

It is no doubt that Dabangg 2 has taken the biggest non-holiday opening ever in bollywood. But the question is whether it can touch or cross 20 crore nett mark. Yes definitely going by the Morning Shows estimates.

Occupancies of Selected Cinemas in Selected Centers (Morning Shows Only) -

Mumbai -
Movietime: The Hub, Goregaon - 75%
CineMAX: Infiniti 2 Mall, Malad (W) - 65%
CineMAX: Mira Road - 55%
Sun City: Vile Parle - 100% (Sold Out)
CineMAX: Versova (Gold Class) - 85%

Delhi -
CineMAX: Pacific Mall, Subhash Nagar - 60%
DT Star Cinemas: Vasant Kunj - 35%
DT Star Cinemas: Saket - 40%
Satyam Cineplexes: Janak Place - 50%

Gurgaon -
DT City Centre: Gurgaon - 95%
DT Mega Mall: Gurgaon - 85%

Box Office Update will be done accordingly when sample datas are received for rest half of the day.

Can Dabbagg 2 Do the Unthinkable?

Friday 21st December 2012 12.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dabangg 2 has taken a historic start which was always likely but the reaction of the audience at various centres across the country gives it a chance to the do the unthinkable and that is go towards a record figure on a working day.

Although it is a tall order as collections at multiplexes tend to take dips especially in the late afternoon shows but if the craze seen in the morning can keep that a dip at minimum then its not out of the question that history can be created.

Looking at the morning and what tends to happen in the afternoon and evening the film should surpass 25 crore nett for the first day with possibilities of higher total and a record first day although very difficult, cannot be totally ruled out of the picture just yet. The late afternoon and evening shows will give a better indication. The record collections for the first day are around 31 crore nett.

Dabangg 2 encashes two brands completely - Salman Khan and Dabangg itself. The film works more for the actor than for the film itself. A feast for the superstar's fans and a one-time watch for the rest.

It wouldn't be wrong to say Salman Khan is the Rajinikanth of Hindi film industry. He can swing villains around like a yo-yo, beat them down to pulp, fly from a place to the other, run faster than a cheetah and cause earth to shatter while making an entry. What's best, he can execute this all while making it look believable. So while people say a Salman Khan starrer doesn't quite need a strong story for his presence alone can make the movie work, Arbaaz Khan Debuts into direction by taking the legacy of Salman's blockbuster Dabangg forward with its sequel. Whether he brings a blend of story and star power or not let's find out.

Quite unlike the sequels being made in the industry which hold no relevance to their predecessor, Dabangg 2 takes off as a continuation of its first part. Chulbul Pandey, who's now a family man with a wife Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha), a father Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna) and brother Makhi (Arbaaz Khan), gets a transfer from Lalganj to the big city of Kanpur. The league may now have become bigger and the goons more villainous but it only takes two fights for this Robin Hood Pandey to claim his status of a super cop in the city. While he comes hard on the criminals and notoriously robs the rich and helps the poor, he also ruffles feathers with Baccha Singh a big political hoodlum. Worse still, he ends up killing Baccha Bhaiyya's beloved brother Genda (Deepak Dobriyal) setting off a rage amongst Baccha and his troupe that only wants to settle scores by killing Chulbul. The rest of the stories comprises of a battle between Baccha and Chulbul.

Debutant director Arbaaz Khan takes over the baton from Abhinav Kashyap who made Dabangg and instead of bringing in much change in the cast and story he retains almost everything from the first part. As an astute businessman and also the producer, Arbaaz keeps all the tried and tested elements of blockbuster Dabangg that potently raised Salman Khan to his stardom.

The film all in all has 5-7 fight sequences, 5-7 grand hero entries of Salman with loud background score, 5-7 songs and characters repeated from Salman's earlier hits. Some of the sequences are literally repeated in order to click with the masses. The film may just have one of the most done to death plots executed in a very done to death format but yet again it will still be watched and rejoiced by Salman Khan fans. Reason? For Arbaaz celebrates the stardom of his big brother and makes sure that his fans get their worth for money.

Arbaaz gives Salman a freehand to essay his part keeping his fans choices in mind and the latter who clearly knows by now what works with his fans takes his character of a mischievously smart and righteous cop forward by bringing newer shades to his character. The superstar brings a perfect blend romance, emotions, comedy and action. One also sees the macho cop's boyish side as he converses with his father.

Sonakshi Sinha this time around too doesn't get much to offer to the film except for 2-3 expressions and 2-3 songs but still looks a perfect match for the personality of Salman Khan. Prakash Raj comes across as a good replacement for Sonu Sood. His character and antics are similar to his earlier Bollywood films Wanted and Singham but still doesn't appear jaded in this one.

The rest of the cast including the likes of Vinod Khanna, Niketan Dheer and Deepak Dobriyal are decent in their parts. Kareena Kapoor's item number although has hit it off with the masses in the film appears needlessly inserted. Music by Sajid Wajid also is pretty much like a rehash of the first part.

To sum it up, Dabangg 2 encashes two brands completely - Salman Khan and Dabangg itself. The film works more for the actor than for the film itself. A feast for the superstar's fans and a one-time watch for the rest.

DABANGG 2 movie review: Salman Khan kicks ass, but the film lacks the punch!

Thanks to Salman's antics, a very predictable Dabangg 2 becomes entertaining, but only in parts. Read full review…

Explaining the plot of Dabangg 2 is easier than making morning tea. So here's how it goes: Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) has now moved to a bigger city – Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. A school boy is abducted by goons and needs to be rescued. Enter Chulbul Pandey (his bulging tummy is hard to miss; perhaps a sign that he is now a happily married man!) and a long fist and gun fight ensues. A chubby Chulbul saves the day. He takes the money from the rich father of the kidnapped boy and donates it to the police fund and to his personal charity, establishing the fact that he is truly Robinhood Pandey. Cut to the title song.

Chulbul and Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha) continue to be totally in love after marriage and sing love songs on the streets once again. Enter a mean looking villain – Bachha Singh played by Prakash Raj – a goon taking his first step into politics. Chulbul makes sure he does not let Bachha continue with his do number ka dhanda. An enraged Bachha sends his bro Genda (Deepak Dobriyal) to threaten Sallu's daddy (Vinod Khanna) who is now happily living with his beta. Despite the threat to his family Chulbul continues to be Dabangg and bumps off Genda to save a girl's life. Bachha decides to kick his political ambitions and avenge his brother's death. He attacks Chulbul's pregnant wife and brother Makkhi Singh (Arbaaz Khan). Rajjo loses the baby, and Makkhi conveniently survives a bullet. Being a Dabangg wife, Sonakshi tells his pati to kill Bachha. Cut to the climax – a larger than life action sequence ( and not without Salman's shirt coming off) and the villain is defeated! The End.

As is obvious by now, Dabangg 2 is too predictable. In fact, the plot is thinner than Malaika Arora Khan's waist! The subplots that explore Chulbul's relationship with his wife, father and brother make you wonder where the film is going. Their purpose is to add an emotional quotient to the movie, but there are far too many subplots and they slow down the pace of the film. Post interval, you constantly wait for something to happen, something to jump at you or surprise you, but when a development does come, it's too late and too lame.

Case in point: A pregnant Sonakshi rolling down the temple stairs while Arbaaz is being held back by the goons. This scene has been used in too many B-grade movies to be taken seriously.

Since the script is weak, director Arbaaz Khan relies on action sequences and cheeky dialogues to do the trick. But that gets too repetitive by the end of it. The production values dip on many occasions – the CGI effects in all the car driving scenes look straight out of the 80's when technology was not available. The direction is sloppy on several occasions.

Sonakshi has more to do in this sequel and she does a decent job of it. Arbaaz appears and disappears at will and makes no impression. Vinod Khanna gets a chance to show off his acting skills after a long time and he proves that he is still a formidable actor. The one person you feel bad for is Prakash Raj. The actor is getting typecast and he has nothing new to offer in this film. Dabangg 2 definitely needed a more menacing villain to make Chulbul look stronger.

Now for the few good things. Most of us will watch Dabangg 2 only for Salman and yes, he keeps up the good work and continues with his antics. But he doesn't get enough support from brother and director Arbaaz, who fails to recreate the magic of Dabangg which was a potboiler with a complex and pacey storyline and loads of punches. Chulbul had many more challenges to deal with because of the differences with his father and brother. In the sequel everything's way too hunky dory and Chulbul is just having a field day.

Some action scenes are well choreographed, but get repetitive after a point. The few entertaining portions come in the form of Chulbul's dialogues with his enemies and his interactions with his fellow police officers. Here I must add that a rather stubby looking Salman is in the company of older inspectors and hawaldars, and this could have been done in a bid to make him look younger and cooler. And that's really not cool! Sallu needs to get fitter if he intends to continue doing action movies.

Dabangg 2 might bring in the moolah, but may not succeed in winning the audiences' heart the wayDabangg did. So watch it for Salman if you must, but be ready to be disappointed. I suggest you settle into your couch and catch the first part once again on television instead!

Rating: 2.5/5
