Dabangg 2 First Day Collection. Earth Shattering Start.

Dabangg 2 has taken earth shatteringopening at the box office on Friday. If we take the sample data of few selected places like Delhi, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Rajasthan and Indore, D2 collections for Morning and Noon shows are just mindlbowing. D2 has recorded an occupancy of around 70% on average across all India. This huge considering working day today.

It is just havoc in places like Gurgaon and Hyderabad where it has registered an never heard before opening of 90-95%+ for working day. Delhi has picked up well after a slow Morning start. Mumbai is rock steady for Morning and Noon shows. Rajasthan, CI and CP  is registering excellent 80% occupancy all India. Northern India, specially Noida, UP, Punjab is also reporting well despite cold wave going on there.

Advance Booking Reports are also good for Evening and Night shows. Many shows are already Sold Out. Expect huge collection for Dabangg 2 as far as First Day is concerned. Though it is too early to make statement D2 is sure shot to pass 20 crore nett mark and even few more crores might add up, if Evening and Night shows turn out well. Salmania has officially griped the nation.

B.O. update: 'Dabangg 2' all set to create history!

By Taran Adarsh, December 21, 2012 - 13:51 IST
DABANGG 2 is all set to create history in India. Rewrite boxoffice records. Set new benchmarks. The latest Salman Khan starrer opened to a thunderous, earth-shattering, unimaginable response across the nation. While the morning shows took off with fervour, the noon shows maintained the pace across the country, despite the fact that the film has opened really wide in India [2250 cinema halls, 3500 + screens].

A slight dip is expected between 3 to 5 pm, since it's a working day, but the business is expected to witness a massive jump from evening onwards. The film is expected to be the biggest opener on a non-holiday, crossing the previous biggest non-holiday opener [ROWDY RATHORE] by leaps and bounds.

As per early indications, a 22 cr + start is being speculated, but if the evening and night shows are huge, the figure may cross the 25 cr mark, which is out of the world. The weekend collections are also expected to be record-breaking!

A still from Dabangg 2

Film: Dabangg 2

9. Dabangg: Worked due to its unabashed admiration for the '70s masala fillum and ability to recreate the formula in a contemporary set-up, maa ka badla and bhai ka pyaar et al.

Dabangg 2: Rehashes Dabangg itself, finding comfort in the formula rather than using it as a tool to entertain. Follows Singham and Khiladi 786, which tried hard to recreate Dabangg magic without being as successful. In other words, it's wannabe-Dabangg.

As a producer, Arbaaz Khan hit the nail on the head with the first installment of DABANGG. As a director, he establishes his credentials with DABANGG 2. He gets the mood of the lead actor, has the feel of Brand Dabangg and executes it the way it is meant to be - flashy, with lots of action interspersed with songs; this time from Zandu Balm to Fevicol. There's a double dose of oomph factor as well, with both Munni (Malaika Arora Khan) and Kareena Kapoor dancing to the beat.

You get what you expect, stylized, and digitalized action (Anal Arasu) with Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) beating the baddies to pulp. This time, the city is Kanpur, and he is out cleaning the mess. He is up against Bachha Bhai (Prakash Raj) a gangster with political ambitions, and the only time Pandey blinks is when he realizes his wife is pregnant. Otherwise, he is as fearless as in the first installment.

In DABANGG 2, Pandey has also made up with his (step) father (Vinod Khanna) and brother Makhan (Arbaaz Khan). This is one happy family. But with the focus solely on Pandey and his karname, the rest fade in the background. Even Sonakshi Sinha has nothing much to do except act coy and mouth a few dialogues.

Just like in Ek Tha Tiger, as soon as Salman's shadow is on screen, the ceetis flow. That's the hysteria he has now created. Get him on the screen, and he is sure to get a resounding welcome. As of date, no other Khan, or star has that impact. Maybe, Rajnikanth in the south.

The movie begins with a kidnap scene. Who else, but Chulbul drives to the rescue of the little lad. From there on its 'Salman entertainment' at its best.

Prakash Raj as Bachha Bhai is potent. He infuses terror when he comes on screen. Dobriyal too makes the best of the scenes he is given. Apart from Salman, it is also Arbaaz who is having the time of his life. The metamorphoses of Makhan from a shy, timid, guy to one who is game for a fight is a smart twist in the tale. As the director, Arbaaz is in control of things; he shows flashes of his brilliance, which were first evident in DARAAR. DABANGG has now become a brand and I'm sure, like Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa, Pandey will keep coming back to entertain us.

All in all, this is one entertainer. Don't go looking for flaws, just enjoy, DABANGG style.

Story

The first time I tried to catch this film was at its premiere show at a mall in a working class neighbourhood Kurla in north Bombay. People in and around the neighbourhood had realised Salman Khan was going to be visiting. Crowds, mostly young men, pretty much took over the fancy mall, screaming by the escalator, running around the lobby, charging towards the barricades. Forget trying to get into the multiplex, exhausted by the whole experience I ran away, almost fearing for my life.

The second time I tried to watch this film was at a 9 am, first day first show. The theatre was almost packed. The audience was laughing away, even before bothering to hear the dialogues. They had come decided that would just love the movie.

You can review films. How do you review blind personal faiths, without quite being accused of heresy, or worse, blasphemy? Critics stick out like sore thumbs in the face of a phenomenon such as this. Never mind if that thumb is pointed up or down. I suppose reviewers in Chennai would know a thing or two about this. Super-hero Salman, in that sense, is closest to a caricature called Rajnikanth down south.

This time as Inspector Chulbul Pandey, his job is to cleanse the north Indian town of Kanpur. Pandeyji is a one-man army tacitly ordained by the government to administer instant deaths. His boss, the superintendent of police (Manoj Pahwa), seems more like his servant as he says about himself: "All I have learnt in 17 years of service is not what to do, but what not to do." Pandeyji, who's just moved from the rural district Lalganj, is Kanpur's sole lawgiver and only hope against the might of a rather lame mafia-politician Bachcha Singh (Prakash Raj).

"Kung-fu Robinhood" Pandey is of course a great cop. While he brazenly pockets bribes, he admonishes traffic hawaldars for being rude as well. The earth shakes as his jeep cuts through the wall and he twists human necks and limbs, decimates enemies with bullets flying through the audience's head.

Sadly Pandeyji can't romance in the same way as before. He's married now. His wife Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha) shops with his money, cooks and cleans, which is how he'd like things to be. As he taunts one of the villains Chunni: With a feminine name like that, what's he doing here, "jaaye ghar basaye aur baap banne ka sukh de (he should go make a home and give the husband the pleasure of fatherhood)." But don't get him wrong. Pandeyji loves his subservient wife. He tells her, "You're not my slave. You can shout back if you want." This is reassuring. The family is his weakness. He also lives with his father (Vinod Khanna) and brother (Arbaaz). This might make him relatively boring. But they don't quite end up clipping the super-hero's wings. Beyond the character, the songs sound repetitive and the stunts are pretty much all that you've come to expect from any action packed revenge dramas. As I said, the audience won't mind and in any case, doesn't care.

Given the recent series of similar, serious blockbusters, it appears you need three things to make a film work: Salman, Salman and Salman. Since there's only one of those, he would do just fine. This relationship isn't complicated. He shows up on the screen. His audience lands up in the theatre. This is how the third-rate Bodyguard or Ready became instant hits. Nobody knows or remembers the names of directors or co-actors of those movies.

Abhinav Kashyap's Dabangg (2010), while a huge commercial success too, was still different. It was a film that was liked by audiences outside of the super-star's worshippers. Unlike in the past, Salman played a character, rather than only himself. The film had a definite setting and it was in equal parts a self-aware spoof and sizzling entertainment. This explains the sequel.

Within two years, that same film has roughly been remade by Akshay Kumar (Rowdy Rathor, Khiladi 786) and by Ajay Devgn once (Singham). Dabangg 2 is relatively better than those movies but it hardly compares with the original.

As prophecied, if the world did come to an end on the day of the film's release (December 21, 2012), you'd feel like a moron spending the last day on planet earth filling your mind and lowering your IQ with rubbish like this. Otherwise, you'd feel just fine, surrounded by Sallu's bhakts who were probably in the theatre knowing that their super-hero in fact would save the world for them. He does. And yeah, like any other faith, this kind of idol worship is really hard to explain.

'Dabangg 2' review: Salman 'Kungfu Pandey' lives up to the hype!

'Dabangg 2' review: Salman 'Kungfu Pandey' lives up to the hype!Resham Sengar

It's December 21, 2012 and finally the wait is over. No, I am not talking about the Doomsday but Salman Khan's eagerly awaited sequel to his 2010 blockbuster hit 'Dabangg'. Directed by debutant director Arbaaz Khan, 'Dabangg 2' is a complete package and a wholesome entertainment that is not-to-be-missed even if you are not a Salman Khan fan.
Though the sequel begins, progresses and ends in the way reminiscing of the first part, yet the makers have not left any stone unturned in presenting 'Dabangg 2' as an out and out entertainer.

In the sequel, cop Chulbul aka Robinhood Pandey has taken a transfer to Kanpur from Lalganj in a bid to perform more heroic deeds. In the opening scene, the larger-than-life Chulbul Pandey aka 'Kungfu Pandey' now, ditches the door to make an entry to beat up goons; instead he barges inside by breaking through the walls in his jeep.

The whole story focuses on Chulbul Pandey's task to eradicate the terror been spread by a powerful super goon cum aspiring politician Bachcha bhaiya (Prakash Raj) and his gang in the town much like the way Chulbul went on to thwart Chedi Singh's plans in the first installment of the film. As the events unfold, Pandeyji is seen killing Bachcha bhai's younger brother to save an innocent girl's honour and thereby putting himself and his family at the receiving end of the super goon's fury. To know how Chulbul deals with the situation this time, go and watch the film.

When it comes to assessing Salman's performance, all could be said is that he is the show stealer here and deserves applause for his mind blowing and effortless action scenes. He plays the bad-ass-cop-with-a-golden heart attitude with lan. Salman has proved with the 'Dabangg' series that he was and will always be an undisputed iron man of Hindi cinema. Period.

Sonakshi Sinha as Rajjo looks better on screen this time. Her acting seems to have improved, perhaps because her experience in the craft has widened ever since she made her debut in 2010. But honestly, in a film where highlighting Salman's machismo is the sole focus, Sonakshi doesn't have much to do. Yes, Salman and Sonakshi complement each other on the big screen and together they have infused life into their marital romance quite well in the film.

Producer-director Arbaaz Khan also reprises his role of Makhan Chand Pandey but keeps his role quite limited and subdued even this time. But the major glitch is that Mahie Gill's character Nirmala. Despite being taken forward in the sequel, Mahie is not given enough scope to perform considering the fact that she is a powerful actress.

The other star of the film is Prakash Raj who the makers have cleverly roped in to play Bachcha bhaiya. The National Award winning actor delivers well, as usual. And just like his role in 'Singhan' this one is going to go down the memory lane as well as one of the best villains we have had in the recent times.

Music composers Sajid-Wajid fell short of creativity this time to compose good tracks for 'Dabangg 2'. The songs such as 'Pandey ji seeti', 'Dagahbaaz' (which seems like an extension of 'Tere mast mast do nain') are boring and can lull the listener to sleep. It is 'Sanson ne' which can be rated well for its soft romantic notes. The most popular track on the charts right now – 'Fevicol se' is good too but only because of Kareena Kapoor and not at all for the vulgar lyrics of the song.

The dialogues stick to their eastern Uttar Pradesh lingo and are extremely amusing. Also, the death defying action scenes are very well performed. In fact it was quite a sight to watch Salman Khan partially lifting an SUV single handedly! Call it mindless yet it is enjoyable.

'Dabangg' was directed by a well-honed Abhinav Kashyap which did superbly at the box office. So there were bound to be expectations from Arbaaz too. But the actor cum director has kept the standards of the film intact like a pro. So much so that it was hard to believe that a newbie in film making has directed the film.

So, go on and book your ticket to enjoy this paisa vasool film with your friends and family and don't forget to grab a tub of pop corn!
