Many centuries have gone by, but rarely ever did we get to hear a love story that became a historic legend as the lovers that we've grown up hearing about. In the 21st century where women are having to fight for their rights and safety, on a daily basis, with crime rates risen to a rate which anyone could imagine, we can only discuss the

Fictional

A fictional story of a couple in the Renaissance times written by one of the famous writers, William Shakespeare. Both Romeo and Juliet belonged to families that have hated each other for years, the Capulets and the Montagues. Upon spotting Juliet at a Capulet party, which Romeo and his friends sneaked into, he fell in love with her instantly, and so did she.  During a fight, Romeo accidentally kills Juliet's cousin, Tybalt and as a punishment, the Prince of Verona declares banishment upon Romeo. If he was to be found within Verona, he would be hung to death. Hence, the only way for Juliet to be with Romeo was to fake her death and easily run away to Romeo but the fake poison given to Juliet by the Priest works for longer than expected. So when Romeo returns to Verona upon hearing about Juliet's death, he truly believes she is in fact dead and kills himself. Later, Juliet wakes up to find her love laying beside her dead, which then leads her to stab herself, committing suicide.

True Story

Ranjha, a Jat, youngest of four brothers, was the favourite of his father, which gave him the opportunity of reaping the benefits of the hard work his brothers did, while he did absolutely nothing. After his father's death, his brothers divided up the land between them which angered Ranjha, as they didn't bother waiting for even a day to pass, causing a fight which lead to Ranjha leaving his village, Takht Hazara.  [Other's say that Ranjha left because his brother's wives refused to feed him.]  Eventually, he ends up in Heer's village, where he falls in love with her and becomes the care taker of her father's cattle for 12 years. Heer, mesmerized by the way he played the flute, falls just as in love with him until one day, her jealous unmarried Uncle, Kaido, spots the two together and informs Heer's father. Upon begging and pleading, the parents of Heer decide to marry her off to Ranjha. However, Ranjha's brothers are humiliated by Heer's Uncle and elder brother when they arrive, causing them to leave without meeting Heer's parents. After a day passes by, Heer's alliance is fixed with a man, Saida Khera. Ranjha's brothers lock Ranjha up in a room until Heer's wedding is over to ensure he doesn't humiliate them further. Deserted and heart broken, Ranjha wanders all over Punjab until he meets a Jogi and becomes one himself as well. As a Jogi, he appears at Heer's village where she resides with her husband. The two then decide to run away with each other, but are caught by the soldiers of the King of that village. After hearing their story, the King orders that Heer and Ranjha be married. Before getting sent off, Heer's Uncle, Kaido feeds her a ladoo with poison in it and everyone back at Takht Hazara find her dead inside the doli when it arrives. Ranjha then stabs himself and dies alongside his love.

Childhood friends, Mirza and Sahiba loved each other deeply, until Sahiba's alliance is fixed with someone else.  Upon receiving a message from Sahiba, Mirza goes to get his love, going against his entire family who warned him about the Sials, [Mirza's brothers]. He arrives during Sahiba's mehendi ceremony and carries her away. Later, her brothers find out about this and follow them. Hours pass by and Mirza Sahiba decide to rest underneath a tree for a moment. While Mirza falls asleep in Sahiba's lap, Sahiba breaks Mirza's bows knowing full well that Mirza was a well known archer who could easily kill her brothers. She had thought that her brothers would change their mind and understand their love but once the brothers arrive, Mirza is killed. It's said that after Mirza's death, Sahiba kills herself with his sword.

True Story

Sohni, a potter's daughter, used to help her father create pots and decorate them for customers. Izzat Baig, a rich trader had arrived in Punjab for business reasons and stopped in the city Gujrat, near the Chenab river [part of Pakistani Punjab now] where he saw Sohni at her shop, and instantly fell in love. He'd arrive at her shop every day and buy pots. Shortly after, Sohni also fell in love with him and so, Izzat becomes a servant of Sohni's father just to stay with her, hence the name 'Mahiwal' [buffalo herder]. After people got to know of this, Sohni's marriage is fixed with another potter as the people deemed it unacceptable that Sohni be in love with someone outside of the community. Helpless, Sohni is forced into the marriage and sent off.  Like Ranjha, Mahiwal then renounces the world and becomes a fakir until he arrives at a small hut across the river of Sohni's new home. It is said that every night, Sohni would swim across the river to meet her lover secretly. One day, Sohni's sister-in-law finds out about this, and replaces the inverted hard baked pitcher which Sohni used to cross the river so she wouldn't drown, with an unbaked pitcher. The moment Sohni jumps into the water with it, the pitcher dissolves and drowns. Mahiwal, who watches Sohni drown from the other side, jumps in to save her and drowns as well.

True Story

https://i.imgur.com/gRVByoR.gif

Majnun, fell in love with Leyla, obsessively. He'd wander around the tribe camp reciting poetry written by him that often had her name in it. His unselfish-conscious attempts to woo Laila lead the locals to call him Majnun [madman]. When he went to Laila's father to ask for her hand in marriage, her father refused and married Laila off to someone else, afraid to cause a scandal since Majnu was considered mentally ill. As many other legendary lovers, Majnu heard of Laila's marriage and wandered off into the desert. His family, giving up hope of his return, started leaving food for him in the wilderness where he was often spotted reciting poetry or writing it out in the sand. Laila, who had moved to modern day Iraq with her husband, suddenly became very ill and passed away. Majnu was also found dead in the wilderness in 688 AD near an unknown woman's grave. On the grave stone, he had inscribed the following:

"I pass by these walls, the walls of Layla,
And I kiss this wall and that wall
It's not Love of the houses that has taken my heart
But of the One who dwells in those houses".

It's believed that most of Majnu's poetry was written before he became mentally imbalanced.
