Lead characters of period shows flaunt jewellery worth more than 8 lakh

With period dramas ruling the small screen, the makers of these shows are leaving no stone unturned to transport viewers back to those eras. From Bharat Ka Veer Putra - Maharana Pratapto Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, the upcomingMahabharat and Jodha Akbar, exorbitant amounts are spent on traditional jewellery and even costumes. With the lead characters sporting jadau and silver jewellery with uncut diamonds and kundan stones, the cost of jewellery ranges between 8 and 15 lakh for these shows.

Jodha Akbar (Yet to go on air)
Jewellery cost: 7-8 lakh (approximate, for lead characters)
Ekta Kapoor's period drama Jodha Akbar which will be launched soon has elaborate jewellery designed for Jodha. The ornaments have a gold base and studded with semi-precious stones like emeralds, pearls, rubies and kundan. "The jewellery is designed keeping in mind the age and character of an actor in the show. It took around two months to design the entire jewellery," says jewellery designer Ekta Gupta. Jodha will be seen wearing a lot of jadau jewellery like kundan borla with meenakari work, neck pieces with uncut stones and polki in gold. Nidhi Yasha, who has designed the look for Jodha, has given a Rajwada 15th century look to her. "It's quite challenging to recreate history. A lot of research has gone into creating the looks of Jodha and Akbar. The ghagra worn by Jodha has gota patti work, kundan embroidery, multiple borders, lehriya, bandhej on it. It took around three to four months to complete the designing," says Nidhi.

Devon Ke Dev Mahadev (Over 400 episodes)
Jewellery cost:
15-20 lakh (approximate, for lead characters)
This mythological show, which started two years ago, has come in for much praise for its ethnic jewellery and costumes. "One has to study the character before designing for them," says Ekta Gupta who has designed the jewellery for this show as well. In the last two years, sources indicate that 14-20 lakh has been spent on the jewellery for the lead characters. Large amounts have also been spent on the costumes. "As it is a mythological show, one has to be little careful while designing the costumes as we can't hurt people's religious sentiments. I have used a lot of chiffon fabric with heavy embellishments, zardozi and brocade work. We have given a lot of drapes for Sati and Parvati's outfits. The scale of spending has shot up for these shows nowadays," says costume designer Neerusha. In fact one hears that for the marriage sequence, the costume of Sati cost approximately 1.5 lakh.

Bharat Ka Veer Putra - Maharana Pratap
Jewellery cost: 8 lakh (approximate, for lead characters for 30 episodes) The jewellery used for the show has a silver base with uncut diamonds and kundan embedded in it. "From neckpieces to headgear to bangles to borla, we have created statement pieces for each maharani. We have done a lot of research while designing the jewellery as the Mughals and Rajputs dressed very differently," says Neerushah. Each and every lehenga worn by the maharanis in the show weighs around 50-55 kg and is ranged between 50,000 and 1 lakh. "As of now, we have designed 10 costumes each for the three maharanis of Udai Singh. As every character has a distinctive look, we can't interchange their outfits. Every outfit has detailed zardosi work with kundan and swarovski," says producer Roopali Singh.

Mahabharat (Yet to go on air)
Jewellery cost: 4-5 lakh (approximate for lead characters ) In Siddharth Tewary's version ofMahabharat, over 5 lakh has been spent on jewellery till now. The show is yet to go on air after which the costs will shoot up. "I have created a lot of temple jewellery with semi-precious stones like feroza. Some of the jewellery used is even in real gold," says jewellery designer Ekta Gupta.
