E! Online is reporting that the two college freshmen from Mystic Falls will "experience the death of one of their fellow freshman when they hit college come October." But the death won't exactly leave them reaching for tissues for long. The site continues that the mourning of one of their classmates will lead one of the gals to "meet a possible new love interest."
Who is this love interest, you may ask? His name is Aaron, and he's described as a "handsome co-ed who may have a connection to the dearly departed." What this connection is (and if its supernatural) currently a mystery!
Aaron kind of sounds similar to a new character named Jesse that TV Linereported on in early July. Jesse, an upperclassman at Whitmore College, is said to be "hot, smart, confident and disarmingly sweet." Like Aaron, Jesse is also said to be a potential love interest for someone – Caroline. The catch is that while he'll catch her eye, he's not exactly vampire friendly. While it's not confirmed, it's possible that Jesse could have been renamed Aaron. If not it sounds like Caroline (definitely not Elena) will really be taking advantage of the boys at college, and leaving both Tyler and Klaus in the dust!
Jesse (and possibly Aaron) will be played by "Greek" star Kendrick Sampson. "The Vampire Diaries" will also be introducing actors Olga Fonda and Janina Gavankar. Fonda, who had minor roles on "Nip Tuck" and "How I Met Your Mother," will be playing a "mysterious European beauty who follows Rebekah and Matt back to Mystic Falls." Matt's Zach Roerig revealed at a "Vampire Diaries" convention in New Jersey that his character will be getting hot and heavy with Fonda's character … so hot and heavy that he teased that she end up in bed with Matt AND Rebekah. As for "True Blood" star Janina Gavankar, she'll be joining the "Vampire Diaries" cast as Tessa, "a beautiful, exotic and self-assured woman who comes to Mystic Falls to rekindle an old flame."

Elena and Caroline are getting the full college experience when "The Vampire Diaries" returns on October 3—or at least the full TV college experience. The Mystic Falls BFFs will move in together when they matriculate at Whitmore College in season five, which, as we've learned through many years of TV-watching, means parties, hot boys and inordinately large dorm rooms.
"Look, we can all joke about it, but in order for a scene to look good, you need a lot of space to shoot in—especially when you're a show that shoots on long lenses," executive producer Julie Plec admitted to Hollywood Crush recently. "So yes, our dorm room is a little bigger than the dorm room I had in college."
But that doesn't mean it's not gonna be awesome. "We establish a university that's old and steeped in tradition and it's been around for a while, and the room reflects that. It's got the big arched ceilings and a good, old-world feel to it. So you will laugh, because yes, of course it's a little bit bigger than it should be, but we're proud of it."
After a troublesome season four (that pesky no-humanity thing really hindered their friendship), the girls are back to normal and excited to re-start their lives in a place where nobody knows any of their baggage, let alone the fact that they're vampires. "They're really committed to enjoying life and enjoying college and being college freshmen," Julie said. It's a good plan—too bad it's not going to work. "Of course things will go instantly, terribly wrong, because that's what always happens, but they remain committed to trying to have a true college experience and it bonds them in a really good way."
While the girls are in good standing, their romantic relationships might not be. Caroline and Tyler are still together, but things aren't exactly progressing according to her plan. "Caroline went to all these great lengths to get Tyler freed from whatever mean and cruel servitude Klaus had him under and come back to Mystic Falls," Julie said. Unfortunately, he gets caught up helping out some werewolves and isn't in a hurry to return to the classes Caroline's enrolled him in.
"Part of their first relationship conflict will be at what point does he show up and how much does he really want to be there? One thing we really want to play with the two of them is when you go away to college, a relationship that was cemented so strongly in high school goes through a few bumps along the road," Julie explained. "We wanted a real human experience for them in addition to the supernatural stuff they have going on. They love each other deeply, but they're also on two very different paths, so we'll see where they land."
Meanwhile, Julie said that "Damon and Elena are living the ultimate hometown hottie long-distance relationship. We all had that, where we went off to college and tried to keep a relationship going with a boy that we loved. Sometimes you end up marrying that guy, and sometimes by Christmas break you're over. Part of the fun of Damon and Elena will be seeing how they handle being separated, and once it's revealed to them that Stefan's not just out living his life, that he's actually in jeopardy, what will that do to both their relationship and also to Elena's commitment to college?"
Luckily, there's a new hot dude at school, Jesse, played by Kendrick Sampson, to distract from all the drama. "At this point, Jesse is just a dude. He's a dude who takes an instant liking to Caroline, but of course her heart is a little bit spoken for. He's somebody who we may see a lot of because he's very charming and likable, and he's a new face at college that's got an eye on our girls. He's a nice guy, the actor is, and he's awfully pretty to look at."
Stefan's brother, meanwhile, will be playing a sort of guardian role for the newly resurrected Jeremy, who is not the most popular person at Mystic Falls High. "Jeremy's back with a cover story and a new reputation as the freak who faked his own death and burned his house down," Julie said.
There have been plenty of weird, unexplained disappearances and reappearances in town, but it's different this time. "The problem is they had, like, a full-blown memorial for him. There were flyers on the wall. That school mourned him, and here he is. The fact that the cover story is he faked his own death because he was troubled isn't going to fly so well with his fellow students and they're not going to be so nice to him about it."
It doesn't help that all Jeremy really wants to do is stand up to the various evil forces that come through his town on a regular basis. "Without Bonnie there by his side and with his sister away at college and with Damon being the sort of reluctant and snarky caregiver/guardian of his life, he's going to struggle a little bit back in high school when really he just wants to be fighting the supernatural battles with his friends," Julie said. "But Elena makes him promise he'll give it a go and stick it out, so he struggles.

Elena's love life has been flipping back and forth between Stefan and Damon for four years now, but now it sounds like a new man is about to become part of it.
Shaun Sipos, known from his role on Melrose Place, has been cast into the recurring role of Aaron in season 5 of the Vampire Diaries, who is about to become Elena's new best friend... and possibly more. You see, Elena and Aaron will meet in college and quickly form a bond due to their similar experiences with dark family tragedies.
It is probably a good thing they didn't announce this one at Comic-con this year as they might not have made it out of the building alive. We already have "Stelena" and "Delena" fans fighting, but if this new character really becomes a new lover for Elena, those two groups of fans could easily unite and rip the series to shreds. Did they really think this one through?
This news is also starting to paint a very disturbing picture for the next season. While it is normal for all series to get new guest stars every season, each of the already announced characters are likely to have very significant roles in this season, and almost all of them are a love interest for someone. We know that they have vacancies thanks to the Originals spin-off, but do we really need more love triangles? What about the existing characters and relationships?
Hopefully we can keep calm and see how things turn out when the Vampire Diaries returns on October 3rd.
