Nine movies to watch out for in July and August

The Indonesian genocide of 1965-6 is a little-known but horrific episode in the history of the 20th Century: between 500 and 2 million Communist party sympathisers, many of them ethnic Chinese, were butchered following a failed coup by leftist elements in the Indonesian military. In Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary, real-life perpetrators re-enact the killings in the stylised manner of genre films, from gangster flicks to kitschy musicals. The film has collected a swag of awards at international film festivals. Released 19 July in the US and Canada, 30 August in Norway.

Woody Allen makes a return to the States and to serious drama after a string of comedies set in Europe. The film stars Cate Blanchett as Jasmine, a high-society New Yorker who flees to San Francisco after her husband's crooked financial dealings are exposed. According to the director, she enters "the realm of absolute unknown, moving from one coast to the other, from one social set to the other, one class to another." As with each new Woody Allen picture, critics and movie buffs will be asking: is this the master's return to form? The mutant Wolverine returns, this time to Japan to engage in a lengthy battle, in the sixth instalment of the X-Men series, following X-Men: The Last Stand. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan/Wolverine, with Famke Janssen returning as Jean Grey. James Mangold directs. Keri Russell plays Jane, a New York woman unhealthily obsessed with the BBC's 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (that's the one where Colin Firth's Mr Darcy emerges soaking from a lake). In this literate romantic comedy from Napoleon Dynamite co-director Jerusha Hess, Jane sets off into the Regency world of Austen's novels, as recreated by a British theme park, in search of the perfect gentleman. The film is based on Eric Danville's biography, The Complete Linda Lovelace, about the woman made famous by the 1972 po*n film, Deep Throat. Les Miserables' Amanda Seyfried fronts an eclectic cast, which includes Sharon Stone (playing Linda's mother), Peter Sarsgaard, Wes Bentley and James Franco as Hugh Hefner.
