Epic Mahabharat on the floors!

Sunday, December 30, 2012 | 10:58:16 PM IST (+05:30 GMT) 19 Comments
Epic Mahabharat on the floors!

With the popular mythological series like Devon Ke Dev. Mahadev, Ramayan, Durga, etc. already doing well on-screens, another epic mythological series Mahabharat is all set to make its come back...

Siddharth Kumar Tewary, who is known for producing shows like Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hin Kijo, Phulwa and Navya is now coming back with the epic show Mahabharat. There had been a lot of speculations about the making and scrapping of the show. Now, the wait is over and our sources have informed us that the shoot has finally begun.

The war sequence is being shot in the outskirts of Jaisalmer. Buzz is going around that the show will be aired daily and not weekly but is yet to be finalized. Earlier, the show was being expected to take the time slot of Satyamev Jayate but it couldn't make it. The making of the show has not been easy for the makers, as it involves three years of re-search and pre-production.

The star cast of this show is going to have a mix of many newcomers and few known faces. All India auditions have been done but the final casting is still on as it will be having lots of characters. According to our reliable sources, Shaheer Sheikh has been approached to play Arjun and Deblina Chatterjee to play Draupadi. Anita Raj has been approached to play the character of Satyavati but due to some reasons it didn't got finalized.

The show is expected to go on-air after about 3-4 months.

Mahabharat back on television?

TNN May 22, 2010, 12.00am IST

Ekta Kapoor's Mahabharat may not have done too well, but that hasn't deterred channels from attempting to making this mythological show again.

The buzz is that the makers of Agle janam Mohe Bitiya Hi kijo are ready with their first pilot that they will be presenting to a popular channel. The show is likely to go on floors in a couple of months. As of now the producers plan on taking as many newcomers as possible as they do not want any recall value. "Existing actors are identified with particular characters, hence it makes sense to go in for fresh faces," says a source.

However, fresh faces can be a huge risk because often their performances lack depth due to lack of experience. Initially Mahabharat was supposed to be made by Bobby Bedi and Chandraprakash Dwiwedi, who had shot a few episodes. It was, however, scrapped by the channel. Edited by Proud-India - 10 years ago

The search for Draupadi ends

Date: 31st August 2013

Siddharth Kumar Tewary finally finds Draupadi

After a massive search, Star Plus' upcoming magnum opus Mahabharat has finally found its Draupadi. Pooja Sharma, a girl from Delhi who moved to Mumbai a few years ago to pursue her acting dream, has been chosen to play this iconic character. Her look in the show, along with the rest of the cast's, has been visualised by Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya and designed by Nidhi Yasha.

"We have learnt that Draupadi was a combination of an extremely strong and beautiful character therefore the colour red will be seen in most of her costumes. The fabric being used is lightweight sheer silk and all the costumes have also been embroidered by hand."" says Nidhi Yasha who spent over 4 years of pre-production on designing the look of the characters visualized by Bhanu Athaiya is geared up to bring out a magnificent treat for the viewers.

She also adds, "The jewellery that she will be wearing will have the lotus symbol depicting beauty and elegance. Creating her jewelry wasn't an easy task. Samples were sourced from Kolkata, Gujarat and South India. In fact, Draupadi is the only character wearing stone jewellery."

Tune-in to watch Mahabharat from September 16th 2013, Monday at 8:30 pm only on Star Plus.

Mahabharat look: Decoded

Costume designer Nidhi Yasha admits to having butterflies in her stomach as her effort of four years, Mahabharat , goes on air soon. She informs us that she and her team went through several rounds of sketching and designing before pitching the looks to the producer and channel. She says, "Perfecting every look was a long process since there are more than 100 characters. Even in terms of jewellery we did not leave any stone unturned, be it getting references from the south or referring to books from all over the world, as every author and painter has a different view of how they dressed. Each costume and piece of jewelry is custom-made. The costumes are heavily hand embroidered. We have used a lot of colours though there is no way to find out if there was some system to dye cloth during those times. We have gone with the references we found in books on the Mahabharat."
Speaking about her favourite characters, Nidhi begins with Krishna. She reveals, "We have tried to follow the image that Krishna has to the T. We have used a lot of pearls since Krishna came from Dwarka that has close proximity to the sea. Pearls also go with the gentle image he has. The mor pankh adds to the look along with a garland of exotic flowers.
Another look that Nidhi is very excited about is that of Draupadi: "Draupadi was born out of fire, so we used fiery colours for her. She was sultry, seductive and dusky. We have jewellery that is delicate, elaborate and highlights her sensuality. It has red stones to show her fiery nature. We have used a Lotus motif to highlight her background. The hair is worn ankle length, and her long torso is a highlight."
Nidhi says that Shakuni is a character that stands out and she is happy the look has turned out just as she had imagined right from the start. "For Shakuni, we used turquoise stone since it is popular in Afghan jewelry. Since he came from a hilly terrain, we dressed him in fur and a thicker textured fabric."
The costumes were originally visualised by the legendary Bhanu Athaiya and then designed by Nidhi.

Bhanu Athaiya designs the look for Mahabharat

articleTNN | Sep 2, 2013, 05.47 PM IST

Reprising characters of an epic on the small screen could be a difficult task and who would understand this better than the makers of Star Plus' Mahabharat.

To ensure that the epic does justice to the theme, producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary has roped in veteran stylist Bhanu Athaiya to design the costumes and look.

The 85 year old Athaiya won an Oscar for her costumes in Gandhi and is an apt guide for the epic. The woman that lives a modest life brings to life ideas that depict grandeur, wonder and beauty. The veteran designer is a consulting faculty for Star Plus' mythological saga Mahabharat and joining her on this show will be Nidhi Yasha. The epic which has taken 4 years of pre-production is geared up to bring out a magnificent treat for the viewers.

Talking about her association with Mahabharat, Bhanu Athaiya said, "I'm really delighted to be a part of such a huge TV venture. The entire look of Star Plus' Mahabharat will revive Indian handicrafts and traditional weaves. Different ancient techniques have been used to achieve the various looks. A lot of bright colored silks, hand-looms, gold and jewelry structured embroidery patterns have been used. My team and I were very meticulous about every detail to remain true to the character. We have worked hard on designing this show and I'm sure our effort will translate beautifully to the audiences."

Designer Nidhi Yasha, who has worked on several other mythology shows, said, "It took a study of over 450 books related to period textiles, costume and jewelry and four years of hard-work to arrive at the current look and feel of the show. An extensive study on jewelry structures according to ethnicity, fabrics, drapes and costume was undertaken. There was always so much to learn, experiment, explore as the subject of Mahabharat is exhaustive and designing characters summing up to over 100 was challenging but very rewarding."
