Show review: Buddha

Saturday, Sep 28, 2013, 11:54 IST | Agency: DNA

Buddha
Zee TV , Sunday, 11 am

It's for the first time that Buddha has been brought alive on the small-screen and naturally aroused a lot of curiosity.

What's it about: It's the story of a warrior-turned-philosopher and founder of Buddhism, Buddha. The serial starts with King Suddhodan returning to Kapilavastu, victorious from a war and greeted by his two wives, Mayadevi and Prajapati, who are sisters. Suddhodan, addressed as Dev by his wives is yearning for a son to take his legacy ahead. Meanwhile Mangala, the wife of Dronadhan, Dev's younger brother is plotting for her son Devdutt to be heir to the king. However, the king performs a yagna to beget a son and soon Mayadevi is pregnant. Mangala tries her best to kill Mayadevi but is unsuccessful.

As is the custom Mayadevi is on her way to her maternal home Devadaha to give birth to her child but delivers enroute in Lumbini and names him Siddharth. His birth heralds celebrations and a seer Asita visits Shudodhan only to tell him that his son Siddharth will be a holy man renouncing the kingdom and worldly pleasures. This doesn't go down well with the king.

What works: The sets are grand but more importantly they look aesthetic. What stands out are the costumes. Right from the jewellery to the apparel, everything about it looks authentic. Understated and elegant, there is a classy feel to it. The special effects are good, the blooming of a flower, the white elephant that appears in Mayadevi's dream are computer graphics but blend nicely with live action. Also, the incidents in the story may have occurred aeons ago, but they have a modern connect. For instance, a selfish woman wanting the best for her child at the cost of others, the selfless love between two sisters etc. Remove the elaborate sets and costumes and you could be watching today's story. Also, the serial moves at a perfect pace allowing you to savour the story, which is good.

What's doesn't:
With costume dramas becoming a weekday primetime affair, wish even Buddha was aired in the evening slot rather than only on Sunday mornings.

Performances: Sameer Dharmadhikari as Shuddhodan is first-rate. His angst at the lack of a heir, devotion towards his wife Mayadevi, happiness at the birth of his son and his transformation as a ruthless king who wants to keep Siddharth away from any kind of sorrow at the cost of others are essayed brilliantly. Gunjan Upari as Prajapati is vivacious and lively while Dipika Upadhey as Mayadevi did her part well. Nigaar Khan's Mangala " the vamp, is slightly over-the-top. The last episode saw the introduction of 10-year old Siddharth in the form of Vishal Bansal and he looked cute.

Way ahead:
The makers should take advantage of the fact that there hasn't been anything on Buddha and make this show an all-rounded one with not just about his life as prince but touching on other aspects as well like his teachings etc, in an interesting manner. Chaya Unnikrishnan

Television these days is giving a tough time to the big screen by introducing shows like Anil Kapoor's 24, aired on Colors TV.

The first week airing of '24' itself has made the audiences addicted to its storyline and the show has also become the talk of the town. On the other hand, Amit Behl, currently seen in Zee TV'sBuddha, is one actor who has missed out on being part of the series.

A source said, "As the series is a remake of Hollywood's 24, Amit was offered the character of the guy who shaves off Jay Singh Rathor's daughter's head. However, the actor was not able to give out dates for the role as he is already busy with Shyam Benegal's Samvidhan."

We contacted Amit Behl to know more on the same and the actor shared, "Yes, I was offered a role in 24 but due to my prior commitments I could not take up the role. But we are in talks for their next season. So let's see, may be next season I will be part of 24."

Great going Amit!

Buddha will spread message of non-violenc

"The first shot of mythological show "Buddha" was taken on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at the Film City here and the makers say it will spread the message of non-violence and equality among the youth.

Being produced by Spice Global, the show is based on the life of Prince Siddhartha and his transition from being a prince to Buddha.

Calling "Buddha" a personal commitment to himself, B.K. Modi, global Chairman, Spice Global, said: "Buddha is perhaps the most important personality to have born in the recorded history of India and we are sparing no effort in making this effort special. Today's youth has to be free from all prejudices and hypocrisy. They need to connect with youth globally to spread the message of non-violence and equality."

"We have put together a very competent cast and are close to finding the actor who is going to play the role of Buddha. This epic will showcase to help the youth to be fearless and move confidently for success in their lives," Modi added.

The first shot of the serial was shot by the actors Sameer Dharmadhikari and Kabir Bedi, who play important roles in the serial.

Glad we didn't make film on Buddha: B.K. Modi

Glad we didn't make film on Buddha: B.K. Modi

Industrialist B.K. Modi, who is making a mega-teleseries on Buddha's life under his banner Spice Global, is glad that he didn't make a film on Buddha's life.

He feels that they would not have been able to do justice to Buddha's character in a film.

It's been more than three years when filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker and Modi announced the making of a film on Buddha's life, but it was shelved.

Later, it was reported that Shekhar Kapur may helm the ambitious project.

"I am glad that we didn't make a film because in a two-hour film, I wouldn't have done justice to the Buddha's character, Buddha's teachings, Buddha's life," Modi said here Saturday at the launch of the series on "Buddha".

"Buddha", a 52-episode series, will tell the story of Prince Siddharth and his transition into the Buddha.

Talking about the format of the show, he said: "It's not 52 serials that we are making, we are going to make 52 films of one hour each."

"So it's going to be something which will give us enough time and enough subject to discuss all aspects of Buddha that the story deserves," he added.

In the show, actor Kabir Bedi will be seen playing a sage who forsees Buddha's coming. Besides, Sameer Dharmadhikari and Gunjan Uprari will also be seen in prominent roles.

On being asked about the film on Buddha, Modi said: "May be after the serial is complete, we may take up again the film project."

The teleseries will be aired on Zee TV.
