Big B vs Salman Khan - who will rule the idiot box?
Big B vs Salman Khan - who will rule the idiot box?

Both Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan have had a long standing stint in Bollywood and now, the two seem to rule the idiot box.

Big B will once again host the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati 7 while Salman Khan will be up to his usual antics in Bigg Boss 7.

With his baritone voice and charismatic personality, Amitabh Bachchan's style and his fan following has made the show an instant hit. He was briefly replaced by Shahrukh Khan, but Big B seemed to bounce back. Last year in the opening episode of KBC6, the show raked in a TRP of 6.1. That same time, Salman's show was also to air on another channel and when asked at a press conference about the tussle between KBC and Bigg Boss, he remained elusive and evaded the question.

While Big B may rule the hearts of the masses, Salman hold his own equally when it comes to fan popularity. Salman's unique style of having fun with the contestants while being strict at the same time proved to be a hit for the show. That apart, Salman's way of handling the fights and controversies on the show make it an interesting watch.

This year too, both KBC 7 and Bigg Boss 7 will mark a new season on TV around the same time. While Big B's KBC is expected to bring in a high TRP rating once again, Salman's Bigg Boss with it's theme of Heaven vs. Hell, has generated a lot of curiosity and everyone seems to wonder how different will it be from last year.

While the common man makes his appearance on Big B's show, Salman's show has a list of interesting celebrities this year. Speculations are rife that celebs like Pratyusha Banerjee, Kushal Tandon, Suraj Pancholi and Harbhajan Singh will be a part of the house.

Amitabh Bachchan's show will air Monday-Thursday prime time (8.30pm-9.30pm) while Salman's show will also air on weekdays from Monday-Friday (9-10pm).

Salman's had some staggering hits on the box office but will he be able to hold stiff competition against big B who is an excellent conversationalist?

It remains to be seen if Big B will beat Salman Khan on Television or will it be vice versa? Tell us your views!

KBC hosts its first of celebs in this season.

Like every season, KBC hosted its first round of celebrity guests last weekend, for season 7. While money making reality show has a lot to celebrate in the aftermath of its latest Mahacrorepati', who won a clean 1 Crore on 12th September, the celebrations simply got a little stretched up to last week as well, for the new Bollywood releases.

While Shahid Kapoor and Illeana D' Cruz were spotted promoting for their latest bigwig, Phata Poster Nikala Hero', which just released last friday, what was even bigger and grand was last night's episode, which marked the presence of the latest heartthrob of Bollywood, our very own Rockstar Ranbir Kapoor and his serenading beautiful mother, Neetu Singh, who is no less than a rock star herself.

The duo came to the show to promote their upcoming family entertainer Besharam', which is all slated for release on 2nd October, 2013. The film also stars Rishi Kapoor, who unfortunately could not be present, yet his presence was made complete by making the audience hear him, not once, but twice, on phone!

Last night episode was a complete entertaining show, where Amitabh Bachchan and Neetu Singh Kapoor, re-ignited their days of movies together.

What was simply endearing was the jig which the duo performed on Ranbir's request. It was a song from Yaarana' called Saara Zamana'. Nothing could beat this chemistry, which was enjoyed by many seated amongst the audience.

While the audience grooved and tapped with this music from the yesteryears, the youngsters were enthralled when Ranbir Kapoor joined the girls, on stage to perform on Badtameez dil'. The night couldn't have been better and it was a huge blast!

With some heart touching moments between the son and mother and some more about his moments of inspiration from Amitabh, the show did touch a few chords here and there in the audience, who were totally awed by the three stars, seated and having a friendly candid chat!

What was thrilling was to see the duo play and answer well to most of questions, donating a clean sweep of Rupees twelve and a half lakhs to their charity, which works for orphaned children.

It was not just the cause, which was noble, but also the game, which was beautifully co-ordinated and played by the mother-son duo! The game was well played and so were the light moments of jokes and the prankster call to Rishi Kapoor!

The audience simply hopes that with some more big Bollywood films making way this year, KBC ropes in the big starts and simply shows a glimpse of all, making the year a memorable and a truly star studded one!

When Amitabh Bachchan does 'Agal Bagal'

When Amitabh Bachchan does 'Agal Bagal'
Agala Bagala with Big B
Look like Big B has taken the theme of Kaun Banega Crorepati 'Seekhna bandh toh Jeetna bandh' quite seriously.

Recently, Shahid Kapoor had taught Amitabh Bachchan a few dance steps which he quickly learned.

In the upcoming episode when B Big comes to know that hot seat contestant Deepika cannot dance, he decides to dawn the role of her dance teacher and teach her a few moves. AB and Deepika then groove on the song 'Tere agal bagal'.

KBC ratings fall accentuates Sony's troubles

Kaun Banega Crorepati, the flagship show of Sony TV, is in its seventh season. The show, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, has nine sponsors on board and started airing on September 6.  This season of KBC is expected to rake in revenues of more than Rs 200 crore.  But the show is facing decline in ratings.

The Season 7 of KBC had a successful opening, but subsequently the show has suffered a ratings drop of more than 50 per cent. As per the ratings data sourced from TAM subscribers, the show had opened with an average weekly rating of 4+, but has gone down to average weekly rating of below 2, in the week ending on September 28 (HSM market CS4+).

In terms of TVTs, the show garnered an average of 6134 TVTs in Week 38 (September 15 -September 21), and 5176 TVTs in Week 39 (September 22 - September 28). In Week 39, the channel slipped to number six position. The show had opened with 8,950 TVTs on September 6 and garnered 8,460 TVTs on September 7.

Senior media planners we spoke to, on condition of anonymity, have agreed that KBC content has been successful till now, but Season 7 is not only facing viewership fatigue, but also stiff competition from other shows on different channels.

"The show is respected, but has nothing new. Viewer fatigue is one of the prime reasons for decline in stickiness of the show. The audience today is very volatile and it enjoys certain content only if it refreshes itself. The content and theme of the KBC has been same since years and people have moved on. People watch it for some time, and at a time of commercial break, they switch the channel. Time and again, they come back, and the process is repeated. This reduces the stickiness and time spent on the show. Large number of viewers now wants to sample content they have not sampled before," said a senior media planner.

Another reason, which has emerged, is the competition from other shows and increase in the channel sampling ability of the viewers. A CEO of a leading media agency shared, "There is a huge competition from other shows, and post digitisation, a viewer has many options. Sony has even tried to refresh KBC in certain ways, but the competition is stiff. This has affected them in a big way."

Although another senior industry expert mentioned, "The show might be losing on the ratings front, but its loyal viewership will remain steady. The target group that enjoys KBC will keep doing so."

Some experts we spoke to also share that lately MSM dispute with some leading cable operators, including Hathway Cables, may have also led to the downfall in the viewership of the show.

Will this affect the inventory cost?
Senior advertisers and planners we spoke to shared that in case of KBC, there will be no impact on locked up inventory, as the prices have already been sealed. But citing that the ratings of the show have going down, advertisers are demanding increased visibility at the same price.

Another advertiser said, "There will be an impact only on the spot-buy inventories. Contract inventories sealed earlier will not get affected."

However, a senior advertising professional maintained that, "Sony is admirable in the sense that it has always stood by the advertisers. The channel works in close partnership with advertisers, taking a long-term view instead of short-term gains."
