They
say, reality is stranger than fiction. But what happens when the two
are mixed and served on the same platter on prime time TV? You get a
spicy mix of entertainment! That's probably why Hindi GECs are
experimenting with the reality fiction format which have found a strong
connect with target viewers. Showmakers are taking inspiration from
real-life stories and recreating them with a dash of makebelief. Shows
like 'Webbed', 'Yeh Hai Aashiqui', 'Bhoot Aaya', 'Fear Files', 'Crime
Patrol', 'Shapath' and 'Savdhaan India' take their inspiration from real
life.
Akashdeep Sabir, creative director of 'Bhoot Aaya', a show with a mix of horror and realism, says, "We aimed at recreating real stories with real people not only appearing on the show but sharing their experiences too. There is a growing demand for shows which go beyond fiction. Reality, when blended harmoniously with fiction offers interesting content and the right kind of drama making it a wholesome entertainment package." Actor Vikrant Massey, who is currently presenting 'Yeh Hai Aashiqui', a dramatized version of real-life unconventional love stories, says, "I was keen to host this show because it's about unusual love stories which are against societal perceptions and the so-called rules and regulations."
It's not just broadcasters and producers who're taking the road less travelled. Actors too, are looking at working in different formats to enhance their acting skills. Arjun Bijlani who's back on TV after a two year break is currently playing the lead in the cookery-fiction drama, 'Jo Biwi Se Kare Pyaar'. Says Arjun, "The title was the first thing that attracted me to the show. It's a unique concept, something that has never been seen before on television, so I wanted to give it a shot. As an actor I wanted to explore something new and wanted to take a creative risk. The basic concept of the show, that men can try cooking if they want to do something romantic for their partners is entertaining and people can relate to it."
Reality fiction shows seem to be capturing the interest of today's generation and find an instant connect with them. Akashdeep adds, "Every five years, audiences' tastes change. Now the audience is giving a thumbs up to stories which are more real and not fiction. When we also have real people on the show sharing their real experiences, viewers immediately connect with the situations and the shows."
While fictional shows continue to dominate the airtime on weekend/weekday prime time bands, newer formats are slowly gaining ground and are finding their share of viewers. With more and more producers, show makers and actors willing to take risks with untested show formats it seems the audience can look forward to an exciting 'real' airtime on prime time TV.
