As much as I would like to appreciate Aamir and his research team for their detailed research about the issue, the details and facts of their survey from India are deeply disturbing.

It is understood that people who are in responsible positions turn insensitive to the victim's pain, physical and emotional.

At a personal level, individuals have to change one's attitude towards victims. This change can only be seen when people believe that the victim's HONOR is not lost after such an unfortunate incident. They are definitely physically and mentally violated but people have to stop associating DIGNITY with such gruesome incident. A woman's dignity is intact even if a sexual assault occurs. Her dignity lies in her surviving spirit. Probably every woman can be a survivor if the society does not treat her differently.

Medical professionals should be sensitive to wards the victim instead of treating them like specimens and corpses they have dealt with in medical colleges. Students complete their medical syllabus long time ago and it is a general belief that they are updated about the latest developments in science. But most of the times, they are not. In corporate institutions, it is mandatory for the scientist involved in diagnostic services to acquire certification from government bodies in India and accreditation from institutions abroad which is a mark of quality in services. Similarly doctors need to be subject to constant tests of excellence through events of "Continuing Medical Education". Their involvement in such events as participant or as speakers should fetch them CME credits that can be utilized for assessing their continued excellence in the field. If found unworthy, simply terminate their services.

I don't think any amount of ideas and suggestions from general public is going to pretty much change the way the Indian judiciary works. Enough and lot of discussions have been held, especially after the "Dec 16 incident of brutal assault and murder". Though it has been declared that the accused would be hanged until death, the judgment is yet to materialize. The "supposed" juvenile is left with minimum punishment who happened to be the most gruesome and violent in his behavior. The current bunch of manipulators in politics within the ruling party and opposition would continue to retain our India to remain indifferent toward such assaults. Zero tolerance is not being seen among politicians. When common man has to constantly prove his competence and excellence to retain his own job, even if it's a monthly pay of Rs. 5000/-, how is it that uneducated, illiterate or even learned manipulators with criminal records are allowed to lead the constituencies and the nation. In this scenario, nothing much can be expected. All suggestions would just be in print not in action.Edited by _Avatarana_ - 10 years ago

So true dear I totally agree with u judicial & medical services are really insensitive towards all this n more heart braking is that in our medical & judicial services do not let that lady get out of all this but they push her into more pain during the case &medical tests disgusting. But I belive in one strong thing that in this male dominated society a women is seen as an object of pleasure not a human being n once this mindset changes these cases will surely drop down

THIS!

More important than judicial justice, it is important that we as a society don't strip the victim of their honor and dignity. Even if the courts convict rapists, the hardest thing victims deal with is being treated like a victim.

To go further. Rape is not a woman's fault. Her short skirt or revealing cleavage is not an excuse. That she was out late or got drunk is not an excuse. That she had a boyfriend and has sex is not a free pass for other men to  violate her.

A raped woman is not broken or destroyed. She is still a whole woman and desirable as a friend, a girlfriend and wife. She should be treated equally to any other woman in society and be able to live her life just like any other woman would.

While we work on our judiciary, we as individuals within society have the responsibility to change the way we think as well as help people around us develop more positive attitudes to rape victims.
