Chapter 16

Sameer was lost in his thoughts smiling at the beautiful dream they had woven all night when his trance was broken with his phone buzzing. He picked it up without looking at the caller,

'hello,ACP Rathod,'

'Sameer mein aj wapas aa rahi hu,monday office join karungi,'an excited voice exclaimed,

'Sakshi?'

Sameer was scared hearing her voice.Her come back only meant Riya's departure from her home.He had kept Riya away from Arjun after their separation.He had blamed arjun for the drift between them and also his moving on in life with sakshi had added more oil to the already burning fire.

He respected,loved and cared for Riya like his own small kid.He was the happiest person when they had decided to tie the knot.He had blessed her,took care of her,earnestly gave in to her complains and wishes,spoke to her in distress,stayed with her and protected her in arjun's absence but he could never ever force her to give him the reason behind their impulsive decision of separation.

Sudden change in Arjun's rude behaiviour towards her surprised him and he didnt know how things changed between these love birds in such a short span of their marriage.Thus,for him blaming arjun and later keeping riya from him,was his ways of keeping riya safe from the pain and heart wrenching cries he had heard her give out earlier.

But now after so many days when he had spoke to her the day at his house,he had noticed the longing in her voice.Later when he had went to meet her at Arjun's place one morning,he had found calmess on her face.She wasnt happy but then the pain had reduced to a high extend.It was then he realised,there was some parts of the story he had missed.He knew Ayesha knew about it and thats why she never blamed arjun alone and even stood by him.

Moreover now after realising his love and affection for Ayesha,and spending time with her specially last night had taught him,how difficult it becomes to lead life alone after sharing a considerable amout of one's life with someone.He himself was surprised to know that the person who stayed all alone for the last 20 years,after his parents death,  had suddenly become so dependent on Ayesha,that he cant even think of a moment without her.

He chukled at his own desperation and the sound brought him out of his trance.He heard sakshi shouting his name from the other end and realised he is still holding the phone.He kept the phone on the ear back and replied back,

'haan sakshi,'

'kaha the tum?kabse chilla rahi hu?gala dukh raha hai mera,'sakshi again shouted at him,

'ahh wo mein yaha..tum batao kiya bata rahi thi?'

'wo mein aj wapas aa rahi,thori der mein flight hai,kal office join karungi,'

'okay,'

'Sameer,'

'haan sakshi,'

'wo koi bohot zyada difficult case chal raha hai kiya?'

'haan ek case hai,kiyu?'

'ohh nehi kuch nehi,thik hai mein rakhti hu,tumse kal milti hu,bye'sakshi replied and
disconnected the call.

Sameer looked at the mobile which still showed the call duration on the screen.He signed and kept it back.He picked up the glass from the balcony railing and walked inside.He found
Ayesha coming inside the room yawning loudly.

The sight of her made his lips curved.He waited for her to come to him,which she did with her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes.

'good morning,'

'morning,'

She raised her brow at him and he shook his head,sitting down on the sofa quitely.She misunderstood his gesture and thought he might be regreting for the earlier night.She sat next to him with a scared and confused face and held his arm.

'kya hua sameer?kahi tum kal raat ke liye..'

Sameer instantly looked at her.She saw her scared face and wrapped his arms around her.His lady has mistaken him.

'nehi ayesha.kal ki raat meri zindagi ki sabse achi raat thi,I cant regret that.'

Ayesha relaxed in his embrace and leaned her head on his arm.

'to kya hua?chehera aisa kiyu banaya?'

He signed and straighten,taking back his hand from her shoulder.He bend down a bit and looked up at her,

'Sakshi ka phone tha,she is coming back today,'

'What?mujhe arjun ko inform karna hoga,agar wo arjun se milne chali gayi to..'

'riya ko dekhegi,acha hai na,arjun ko waise bhi decide karna chahiye wo kiske sath rehena chahata hai,wo aise dono ko dhoka nehi de sakta ayesha,usse riya ko samjhna hoga,wo aise..'he couldnt complete ayesha flared up at him,

'acha wo riya ko nehi samjhta?kiya riya samjhti hai usse?usne jo kiya kya wo sahi tha?arjun ne sakshi ke sath galat kiya hai ye mein maan sakti hu,per riya ke sath,nehi she deserves this,'

'ayesha,tum aise kaise kehe sakti ho?khud ek larki hoke,ek dost hoke tum riya ke bare mein aise..kya kiya tha usne jo she deserves to be insulted everytime?'

'dost hu iske matlab ye nehi sameer ki galat ko support karu.Riya ne galti ki hai aur usse bas uski sazaa mili hai..'

'aisa kya kiya hai riya ne?'

Ayesha remained silent.

'Ayesha batao mujhe,aisa kiya hai jo tum janti ho aur mein nehi,batao'

'meine kisise promise kiya tha sameer,mein nehi bata sakti,shayad tumhe riya se puchna chahiye,ya arjun se'she said calming down looking at him.

She walked away inside the room.Sameer looked at her and kept repeating her words.It high time he needs to know the secrets now.

Arjun was waiting downstairs for riya to come out but as usual she was taking a long time to get ready.She had a bandaged hand and it was difficult to wear clothes with a single hand,but then arjun had completely avoided to help her this time,may be he didnt wanna lose his own control.

Riya came down in a loose sleeveless salwar,with a hand hanging on the bandage wound around her neck.She called him to get his attention and he stood up,turning to look at her.She looked beautiful to him,even when she was in her worst choosen clothes.He lowered his gaze feeling her helpless gaze and turned to walk to the door.He opened the latch and left the door open for her.

Riya stepped out without any more delay.She was not able to take the awkwardness between them.She waited at the door while Arjun drove the car in front of her and got out.He opened the door for her,which she acknowledged with lowered gaze and sat inside.Arjun came back to lock the door of the house and walked back to take the driving seat.

They reached the hospital in some time.Arjun tried to help Riya to get out but she avoided him.They both walked inside the hospital,posing two different individuals,not even looking at each other.

They waited for the call from the doctor.It was a long wait,making the two restless souls create even more distance between them.Arjun didnt once look at Riya,but brought a cup of coffee for her along with his tea,which she accepted without looking back at him.

The doctor didnt take much time and removed the bandage.She checked her hand and a final xray confirmed her hand was particularly fine.She recomended a few medicines and exercises for her.Her hand would take some time to get back to normal.Till then the exercises and small,restricted movements were recomended.Arjun did pay heed to all the instructions but posed ignorance to everything.

They left the hospital in the similar manner as they had entered.The drive back was a slient one.They stopped at a regualar resturant for their lunch.Though Riya never liked such road side resturants,Arjun always loved these places.It gave him the freedom to breath,the naturalness and the unique feeling of exclusion from the world,which the affluent resturant couldnt give him within their thick walls.

Earlier during their peaceful married life,riya had always prefered lavish and a spoilt life,owing to her upbringing,and Arjun had always maintained her comfort.But today,neither
Arjun wanted to get into the pool of memories and make everything more difficult,nor Riya wanted Arjun to sacrifice his own self anymore.The arguments which had earlier brought them closer,were completely absent today.Both were scared of their own insecurites now.

After lunch they headed back to their present house.On the way Arjun dropped in a medical store and got the required medicines.They reached back and Riya got down some way before the door,while Arjun went to park the car.

Arjun came back and found Riya speaking to someone.He called her and she turned around.Thats when he noticed the person she was talking to.Sakshi came running at him smiling cheerfully and hugged him,

'Arjun kaise ho?'

Arjun was stunned at her sudden arrival and closeness.Her weight against his chest made him lose his balance and he stepped back a few steps.He held her back to steady her in his arms.

He felt her smile against his chest and looked up at riya.She was quitely standing at the same place,looking at them with despair and loss in her eyes.She had finally realised what destitute and emptiness means.
