Part 6
This was the best part of the camp for me. I twisted it a little. Hope you enjoy it!!
RV thought the astrologer resembled an oversized owl, but she offered them food which made her less hideous. She even brought them a drink. It tasted like burnt wood. RV spat the drink. But Panchi emptied the drink in 3 big swigs. RV swore loudly in his mind.
This girl was really hungry.
The astrologer left for some last minute work to be done. RV watched her go. He then looked at Panchi.
Her head was lolling on one shoulder. She was swaying on the spot.
"Moti you ok??"
She looked up. Her eyes were unfocussed. Her lips curled into a pout.
RV realized with a shudder. Panchi was drunk.
She babbled about her and him together in a relationship. She laughed about it. "Tu aur mein gf aur bf", she babbled blowing a big raspberry. "Aunty kin a satak gayi hai!!" She said laughing even louder.
RV felt a sharp pang of pain. It bothered him to know that it didn't matter to her anymore.
"Nah" RV thought to himself, She's just...drunk" he thought consoling himself. "But people spit the truth when they are drunk?" he contradicted himself.
"Nonu mujhse pyaar nahi karta", Panchi said staggering and holding up her fists to show a sign of protest to what the astrologer said. "Nonu loves Ruku Baby".
RV tried to silence her but ...
Reality dawned on him. Not even for once he thought about Rukmini. Why should he?. Was it that important. He was more worried about getting him and his best friend alive from the forest.
Panchi's babble died. She was snoring delicately. RV looked at her. The pain was mounting in his chest. "Why does she think I do not love her?? " He wondered. "Not that love but just love her like a buddy".
His own words weren't helping him pull his anxiety down.
He pulled a thin rug over her. She mumbled in her sleep something that sounded like "Not god enuf for him.."
He looked at her one more time just to make sure she was asleep. He walked to his straw bed that was made for him on the floor. He laid his back on the hard pillow. He wanted to wipe his thoughts, thoughts that shouted and echoed in his mind. He closed his eyes shut when a voice called him.
"Nonu", Moti screamed loudly. She woke up. Pushed her rug away and staggered towards him. She just slept beside him saying " Don't leave me Nonu!", She cried and then ... he could hear her buzzing snore again!
He put an arm around her to support her head. She groaned once and fell back into her dreamland
He looked at her and smiled. She was innocent, her face devoid of all the bad things of the earth. She was the best thing that happened to him. She was the best and RV would make sure that she'd get the best in her life.
A better life to be frank. He'd get the best life partner for her.
This thought couldn't float in his mind for long and the chest in his pain made him cough. A vivid image shot before his eyes.
Panchi, the bride, wearing red attire holding a big garland was walking shyly towards the aisle. RV was watching her through the center of the hall, the mantras and chants reverberating loudly in RV's head. She was happy, her smile reached her eyes. She was walking with her teary eyed mother and a gang of giggling girls. She was getting married...
RV closed his eyes tight shut. He opened them and blinked feverishly to remove the last traces of that vision.
No! He breathed faster. No, this can't happen. I mean who on earth she was going to marry? All he could imagine was a faceless prat whom he wanted to throttle. But then why was she so happy?
He knew that at one point in his life that Panchi liked him. But why was that important now? She moved on and evidently had a boyfriend. Never mind she broke up with him.
But being in a relationship was far more different than taking the vows of marriage. That meant she'd commit to someone for life. She'd only think about him. Her husband! Her life would revolve only around him.
But then, What about RV? Would she just forget him? Just like that!
NO
The pain in RV's chest was unbearable.
This will happen someday, and it's not just with her but even RV would have to move on with someone else.
RV thought he had a brain freeze. Another vivid image shot before his eyes
RV the groom, was standing in the middle of the stage waiting for his bride. His heart beating faster.
He heard the crowd ooh!" at the sight of the bride. Her face was foggy, probably because of the light that was thrown on RV's face by the videographer. He wanted to kick the videographer for that!
RV tried to focus his eyes on the bride, her flowing red attire sweeping the soft grass. Her anklets making a soft jingling with every tentative step she took. "Shubh Mangala Saavdhaan", The priests chanted, their nasal voices echoed off the trees.
RV's was taking sharp breaths.
Who was she?
She was close to the stage... if only he could see her face. He craned his neck feeling stupid about his actions. Her face was becoming clearer,
More clear...
and
She finally came into the light...
PANCHI.
RV smiled. His stomach did a somersault. His heart was ready to leap from his chest.
Idiot. He said still unable to hold his feelings "In the last vision the person she was supposed to marry and the person I wanted to kill so desperately was... ME!!" he thought, the feeling of a dandelion flowing in the wind came into his mind. The pain had eased. He was flying just like the dandelion.
He smiled feeling warm in the cheeks. He filled Panchi's bridal look in his eyes and shut them. He wished he had not done that.
He was back from his revere in the astrologer's hut. He was still smiling.
He liked it.
He liked it very much.
