Dude, tell me about it. If you think the Harshad-Preetika shipping is atrocious, you don't even want to get acquainted with the sheer MADNESS that is the shipping of Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson (two One Direction members). Like seriously, it cannot get any weirder than that. I'm not bothered by the shipping of this pair itself, but by the extent to which shippers can go.
Basically, rumors about their relationship have been flying ever since the band was formed, and their body language during interviews and public appearances seemed to cement the gossip. For two straight men, they were practically all over each other. So the fans combined their first and last names to create "Larry Stylinson". They haven't admitted to being in a relationship (both have/had girlfriends in the past) but most people are convinced they are hiding their sexuality to keep the band appealing to teen heterosexual females.
There is all kinds of scary stuff on the internet about this couple - including really, really, really graphic fanfiction and fanart. I haven't read the fics but I did accidentally come across some artwork. Trust me, I wish I could UNSEE some of the things I saw. *shudders* π People are hating on their girlfriends and calling them "beards" (which, as I recently found out, is a word that refers to a member of the opposite sex who's hired to accompany a homosexual person to public events to hide their sexuality).
The Larry Stylinson shippers are EVERYWHERE - YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, you name it. The depth and zeal of their Louis/Harry analysis is unprecedented. And the guys know this because they're active on social networking websites themselves. Yet somehow they never concretely deny the gay rumors. This fuels all the speculations even further. π
I'm not homophobic. I think those two would make a cute couple if the rumors do turn out to be true (and based on their statements/behaviour I am sort of convinced they are a couple) but these are real life people we're talking about. Writing raunchy fanfictions about REAL people is something I find extremely disturbing. Pushing them into relationships, picking apart their sex life, fighting vehemently with other fanbases over them, drawing pictures of what supposedly goes on behind closed doors, etc is just so cringe-worthy. Makes me feel SO glad I'm not famous!
