Importance of Naag Panchami ??

I know that it's a bit late for me to put up a topic about snake worship but i'm really intrigued by the custom. Of course, there are several sites with information about why snakes are considered sacred by many, cutting across faiths. But I'm still unable to apprehend much of it. Could somebody please shed some light on the importance of "naag pooja" ?? Also, while at it, I'd also like to know about "sarp-dosha" ; the importance of snakes in astrology & anything else people here may have knowledge of. 😊
