I had not planned to put this sonnet here but after reading this I should, as this poem is an epitome of strong friendship between William Shakespeare and his friend the Earl of Pembroke...

Nor Marble Nor Guilded Monuments,by William Shakespeare

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments

Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone, besmear'd with s**ttish time.
[the word with the stars here means untidy time]

When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword, nor war's quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.

'Gainst death, and all oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.

So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers' eyes.

I will try my best to explain the meaning in short:People build monuments and statues covered with Gold in memory of princes and people but only few of these get over the ravages of time.Monuments and statues decay but this sonnet which William Shakespeare wrote will live forever in the hearts of the readers. On the judgement day that is after his death, when Earl of Pembroke will see that he still lives inspite his death he will realize the value of this sonnet and William Shakespeare's deep friendship.😊
