Why Pankaj Kapur as the lecherous old painter Don Pedro in 'Finding Fanny' is one of Indian cinema's most interesting artists

New Delhi: Wiping his hand across the scraggy stubble, the old, cynical artist Don Pedro Cleto Colaco looks leeringly at the the voluptuous old widow Rosie Eucharistica. "I want to paint you," he says, bowing down low in a smooth movement. The older, but still attractive woman, blinks, taken aback. But she's clearly impressed.

This scene, from the upcoming film 'Finding Fanny' is certain to bring a smile to the audience's face. Critically-acclaimed actor Pankaj Kapur is simply perfect as the lecherous, eccentric, funny and very "real" artist Don Pedro. And actress Dimple Kapadia is charmingly convincing as the loud, selfish and sexually-charged old widow, Rosie.

'Finding Fanny' a English/Hindi film which is set to hit the theatres on September 12, has been directed by 'Being Cyrus' and 'Cocktail' director Homi Adajania. The film, stars Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Kapadia and Kapur in key roles.

Kapur, who was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj's 2013 film 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', is hilarious as the eccentric painter.

The following article may contain spoilers for the film 'Finding Fanny'. If you haven't seen the film, come back to the article later.

The film, which borders from average to slow in most parts, is raised above the ordinary by these two veteran actors, particularly Kapur. Don't get us wrong, Naseeruddin Shah as the bumbling Ferdie is charming and endearing, but the performance (or the role itself, to be fair) doesn't come anywhere close to what Kapur delivers.

"I got a very good vibe from Homi. I felt very comfortable in his presence. I felt he was chilled out and a nice guy who came up with an interesting script. He gave me a lot of confidence as a person. The kind of role I play in the film is very unique and something that I have never done before," Kapur said in an interview to PTI.

Kapur, who was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj's 2013 film 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', is hilarious as the MF Hussain-esque painter. With lines full of double meanings and incessant ogling at the voluptuous lady, their little banters and awkward scenes are some of the high points of the film.

In one of the particularly hilarious scenes, Don Pedro is riding in a car with the rest of the motley bunch. Rosie has fallen asleep, and Pedro takes this opportunity to whip out his sketch book and slyly slide Rosie's skirt above her knee. He then hastily begins to draw in his little book. "What are you doing," asks Deepika Padukone as Angie. Lost for words, Pedro fumbles, tugs at his neck-scarf and stars singing loudly, to the astonishment of others. A few moments later, he starts doing the same things! Oh, and he also refers to Rosie's pet cat as 'pussy'.

Kapur also gets to share some hilarious but meaningful lines with Naseeruddin Shah. Shah as Ferdie, who's afraid of the dark, refuses to go out in search of fuel, and they're stuck at some random countryside. Ferdie insists on going in the morning, as he's afraid of the dark. Don Pedro, who wants to get rid of him so that he can continue with his seduction techniques, responds, "You should go now! It is very difficult to overcome the fear of dark, especially in the day. Too much light my dear."

"It's a great pleasure to work with fine actors, and Naseer is one of the finest actors that we have. It is always great working with him but in this given case, the three other actors were quite a joy too. They had a down-to-earth approach, great professionalism and discipline towards their craft," Kapur said in an interview to PTI.

60-year-old Kapur will now reportedly be seen in Vikas Bahl's upcoming film 'Shaandaar'. Going by his glorious track-record, we can't wait to see what this brilliant, versatile actor will do next.

Story: Ferdie and friends set out to find his love - is Fanny found?

Review: So, Finding Fanny reveals not one but two surprising ladies - Deepika and Dimple, who run away with this lustrous film. Angie (Deepika) is the daughter-in-law of Madame Rosalyn (Dimple), two lovely widows living in the Goan village of Pokolim, a place that's gently fallen off the map. Time quietly passes Pokolim by - until its postmaster Ferdie (Naseeruddin) has his proposal to Stefanie Fernandes returned, unopened after 46 years.

Angie's determined to help devastated Ferdie find answers. She enlists the rusting Impala of Ruben-like painter Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapoor), lusting after amply endowed Rosie, the group driven by Angie's snarling, stubbly ex Savio (Arjun). Do they find Fanny - and love?

Finding Fanny sails on the fresh breeze of Deepika's smooth performance, her lonely Angie happy, yet tremblingly vulnerable, her face covered with a lace-like tension when she asks Savio, "Are you...married?" Alongside, the movie's mast is Dimple's unabashed, terrific Rosie, whose backside drives Pedro to paroxysms of painterly lust, who throatily screams, "Stupppid! I'll castrate these dogs one day!"

Naseer as bumbling, fumbling Ferdie is the perfect foil to the luminous ladies - he recalls a desi Mr. Bean, showing just enough spark to sidestep being a has-been. As sardonic Don Pedro, Pankaj Kapoor has the funniest lines, delivered with sleazy flourish - "You Casanova of the Konkan!", he goads Ferdie, while Arjun Kapoor makes a knuckle-sucking sexy Savio, who adores Angie but can't say it - till she climbs atop him on a gorgeous, phosphorescent night.

Finding Fanny is funny, dark, yet bright, a shimmering ride through a Goa far from the tight-rooted Trikal, the touristy Dil Chahta Hai. Its drama keeps surprising - but also meanders, including around an overacting Russian and an unnecessarily macabre cat. It evokes an Almodovar-Anderson-Marquez-in-Goa feel, but occasionally, its cleverness grows obvious while little details - catch the changing colours of Ferdie's petrol can - are overlooked.

However, these are small creases on an otherwise scrumptious cake. Move your fanny for this one. For the most part, it is utterly, bitterly delicious.

Creature 3D V Finding Fanny This Week
Thursday 11 September 2014 11.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

This week will see a clash between Creature 3D and Finding Fanny with the films aiming at totally different ends of the market. Finding Fanny will mainly find takers at the premium multiplexes in the metros of Mumbai and Bangalore and at some properties in the Delhi NCR area.

Finding Fanny has some face value with Deepika Padukone who has had a great box office run in the last year or so with blockbuster films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express but that may not count for much as Finding Fanny has nothing else really going for it.

Creature 3D will be looking at mass circuits like CPCI, Rajasthan, Nizam and Gujarat to amass the numbers. Creature 3D will easily release on more screens but as Finding Fanny has a running of less than two hours it will get a lot of shows at multiplexes. If Creature 3D was a horror film it would have a good chance of coming out on top but now it will be about how it can match up to Finding Fanny in the bigger circuits as in mass circuits it will be way ahead.

If Creature 3D can put up numbers similar to finding Fanny in Mumbai and Delhi/UP then it could get the better of the bigger film on the opening day.

^^I think FF will start slow in the morning shows..It will do better in the evening,as the film is seen to be catering to a mature audience.

Word of mouth will make it or break.

It was never going to be easy..but Homi has got two new films and Dinesh Vijan is collaborating with Dharma...Quality will never go waste. There will always be takers.👍🏼
