Sigaram Thodu Review

Vikram Prabhu's Sigaram Thodu is a well written edge of the seat thriller laced with commercial entertainment ingredients. The film works largely due to intelligent writing of its director Gaurav Narayanan and his packaging mixed with father-son sentiments.

A lot of detailing has gone into the script. The plot is based on the recent series of ATM credit and debit card skimming and how organised gangs are making money out of cards. Gaurav has done research on it, and explained it in a way that the common man can understand the scam involving credit cards.

Murali Pandian (Vikram Prabhu) is the only son of Chellapa (Sathyaraj) an honest police officer who now works in the crime and records bureau of the department. Chellapa wants his son to follow his footsteps and win a gallantry medal, but Murali has his own reason not to be a cop. He prefers a 9 to 5 job and aspires to be a bank manager. Murali falls in love with Ambujam ( Monal Gajjar) and she also never wants him to be a cop. However due to circumstances he is forced to take up a police job and go after a gang which attacks ATM's!

The film belongs to Vikram Prabhu. He has chosen a good script and does full justice to the character he portrays on screen. Murali Pandian is a thinking cop and uses his intelligence more than his brawn. Vikram has improved not only as an actor but has also danced well and in action scenes looks convincing. Monal looks cute and does her role with ease.

Sathyaraj is simply terrific, especially in the emotional scenes and his fight with baddies. The patriarch steers the film to the winning post, with a very realistic performance as an honest cop and a dedicated father. Sathish as Vikram Prabhu's friend is a welcome relief along with TV actor Mahesh who provides some laugh in the second half. The fraud godman scene is hilarious. Gaurav as one of the villains impresses.

D Imman's music and BGM is in tune with the theme. "Anbulla Appa" by Yesudas and "Pidikuthe" are the pick of the lot. Sigaram Thodu is technically slick. The top angle shots of Vijay Ulaganath are stunning especially the Uttar Kasi portions in the first half. Added to that Praveen KL's editing makes it racy. On the downside the film could have avoided unnecessary romance and plane humour in the first half.

On the whole here is a film that strikes a balance between style and substance. The director and his screenplay have been able to construct an engrossing actor -driven thriller with panache.
