Travel FAQ & Important Websites
For Destination information Google your destination and no matter how obscure your query, most probably you will find plenty of information, some commercial, some written by locals and enthusiasts, so weed out what you need.
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ You will get loads of information from this amazing website .
www.virtualtourist.com This is another superb online resource .Written by travellers, it's a down-to-earth guide to accommodation, eating out, activities, shopping, everything!
For currency conversion go to www.xe.com/ucc/ for every possible currency conversion you could hope for.
Don't forget that actual guide books can be worth their weight in gold. Your local library will likely have some travel guides so you can borrow them when you start to research your travels. You can photocopy some of the essential pages if you won't be taking a travel guide with you.
If you want to know the weather of where you're going, Google 'your destination' weather'. At the same time realise that weather is never predictable.
Learn the language of wherever you're going, as much as you can. ...which is really helpful... and also if you have the time learn even more - the locals will respect you so much more and you'll have such a more enriching experience by being able to chat to locals.
Don't pack too much in. The world isn't going anywhere. What will you really see if you plan to visit 11 countries in 2 weeks? You will be exhausted, cranky, and disappointed that you didn't see anything. Take your time. You can always go back.
Always lock your luggage - the best locks are the numerical locks as opposed to the key locks (in case you lose those little keys!).
For what to do, what to see, what to buy, again, the above travel guides and web sites have all that info, but use it as a guide, not as a mantra.
Please add your own tips and links! Have a great time - travel is the most amazing thing you'll ever do!!
