MUMBAI, February 20: The million dollar barrier was breached in the opening round itself when the Chennai franchisee of the Indian Premier League (IPL) bought Twenty20 World Cup winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for a staggering $1.5 million (approximately Rs six crore) here today.

Veteran Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya, at 39 among the oldest in the 77-player auction, was bought by Mukesh Ambani's Team Mumbai for $9,75,000, the second-highest winning bid after two rounds.

Team Mumbai, which did not successfully bid for any of the six players in the opening round, went hammer and tongs in the second round and outbid others to capture the services of India's number one limited overs slow bowler Harbhajan Singh for $850,000.

The side already has the services of icon player Sachin Tendulkar who was not part of the pool at Wednesday's auction.

The Mumbai franchisee will now have to tread carefully in getting the remaining players for its team as they have exhausted $3.5 million out of the $5 million cap in buying out 'Matara Marauder' Jayasuriya and 'Turbanator ' Harbhajan.

The cap includes the amount to be paid to Tendulkar which would be 15 per cent over and above their highest player bid in the auction, which after two rounds is the winning bid for Jayasuriya.

Indian Test captain Anil Kumble was bought over by Team Bangalore, his home city franchisee owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, for $500,000, double his base price.

Sri Lanka's highly successful wicket keeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara will represent Team Mohali, to be led by icon player Yuvraj Singh. Sangakkara was sold for $700,000, as compared to his base price of $250,000.

In the first round, Team Hyderabad successfully bid for the swashbuckling Australian wicket keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist for the same amount as Sangakkara. The reserve price for Gilchrist, who is retiring from all international cricket at the end of the ongoing triangular series in Australia , was $300,000.

Andrew Symonds was bought by Hyderabad franchisee of the Indian Premier League for $1.35 million.

Retired Australian leg spin great Shane Warne's winning bid, by Team Jaipur (Emerging Media), was the same as his reserve price (USD 450,000). Warne is 38 and has already retired from international cricket.

Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar (winning bid by Team Kolkata of Shah Rukh Khan for $425,000), Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene (successfully bid for by Team Mohali of Preity Zinta Group for $475,000) and his teammate and the worlds highest wicket taker in Tests Muttiah Muralitharan (Winning bid by Team Chennai for $600,000) were bought for prices well above the base prices quoted for these players.

The base prices for Akhtar, Jayawardene and Murali were identically fixed at $250,000.

After the first two rounds of auction, the franchisees had paid $7.175 million while buying 10 players.

Gosh, after this money ,money everywhere in cricket I doubt if our generation next will even touch their text books ,it will be sothe, jagte, utthe, baitthe cricket ,cricket, cricket, henceforth you'll see deepika after dhoni, not dhoni after deepika..take it from me..... ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜›

the best part is symonds is auctioned next highest to dhoni..the moral of the story is sledge, play unfair but real hard cricket then the player's value is sky high....symonds will be laughing his way to the bank ๐Ÿ˜ก

These players are getting paid a BOMB! and this is just the MINIMUM that they will be paid:O
I am sooooo happy for Ishant Sharma!! He is in the top 5 most paid players! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ and hes barely been out here for long! by the way, ishant was bought by the one and onl srk khan ๐Ÿ˜‰
there were loadss of others like the ambani's, reliance and wayy more hugeee brands!
was shocked to see ponting not even getting paid as much as yusuf pathan-a complete ammateur! ๐Ÿ˜†
indians players have to be the 1's topping the leagues right now, they are getting paid soo much!
just look at pathan and RP singh, sreesanth, gambhir and utthapa! its truly shocking! well atleast our players are ranked higher than ours ๐Ÿ˜† well we are the 2020 CHAMPS! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ no wonder dhoni is being paid 1.5 million!!
sachin is not far behind too, its not said how much the big 3-sachin, dravid, ganguly and sehwag and yuvraj are being paid but believe me its a BOMB! lol
i believe a few of the players mentioned above are gonna be paid over a million and no doubt sachin is 1 of them... ๐Ÿ˜‰

1 of the most shocking things had to be no takers for michael hussey:O yet his LITTLE BROTHER got a decent amount!
im just tryna figure out why there was no takers for chanderpaul? hes a decent player! umar gul only 150? hmmm

btw hun, i think dhoni was sold at 1.5 mil and not 1.35 ๐Ÿ˜Š
lastly, i really do salute VVS Laxman! he gave up the place of an icon player so that money could be spent on other players! a true gentleman (ahem wot can i say? hes indian:P)
love the way young 2nd class cricketers are given a chance ๐Ÿ‘
best of luck 2 mumbai! haha:P ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
no comment about symonds! i thought indians didnt accept monkeys? or i thought we are too racist to pay him soo much? now why is he not complaining about why indians are paying him too much?

looking forward 2 this! hpe they air it in UK! ๐Ÿ˜Š

nisha hun,i stand corrected๐Ÿ˜‰..i agree cent percent about your views on symonds...kaun karida usko๐Ÿ˜กwish he and bhajji r in the same team..that will be masala thadka dalke๐Ÿ˜†aur mam aapki analysis is good๐Ÿ‘
