Ekta confident about Kis Desh Mein…

Soap queen Ekta Kapoor is very confident about her new find Additi, the lead (Heer) of her new show Kis Desh Mein Hain Mera Dil which will be replacing Kasauti. Ekta had a chat with us about the show.

On her new show, she says, "It is the story of two nations – India and Canada. The presentation and look of the show is unique. Based on Punjabi tradition, the treatment given is young and that is why I have taken fresh faces."

Shedding some more light on the show, she says, "Heer is a very simple girl who accepts all decision taken by her parents. Her parents decide a boy for her but destiny has something else in store for her. On the other hand, Prem (male lead) is mamma's boy but also the one who keeps the family together. There is one vamp in the show and that is destiny. They are needed for TRPs."

She is confident that the new faces will be able to make an impression. "They will surely create magic and will able to show the required passion. We had taken auditions from all over India but my team selected Additi. She was perfect for this role. Heer's Ranjha (read Prem) has not been selected yet but will surely be a very romantic guy."

Tasneem Sheikh, who will play the part of the vamp, adds, "Mine is a performance oriented character with various shades. I am there in the show to add tadka otherwise it would be like a meal without salt."

Kis Desh Mein Hain Mera Dil will go air from Monday, March 3 at 8.30pm. The star cast includes Deepak Qazir, Kshama Deshpande, Sadhna Singh,Virendra Singh and others.

Star launches Balaji's passionate tale of eternal love

After showcasing numerous serials that have won the hearts of viewers for years, Star Plus and Balaji Telefilms partner once again to launch a love story, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, starting Monday, March 3rd, Monday – Thursday, 8.30 pm only on Star Plus!

Replacing the timeless romantic saga, Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil is set to enthrall the audience with its young love story. The show is based on strong family values, interweaved with family relations and a love that blossoms despite all odds.

Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil is a story of promises and an immortal love that transcends all boundaries. It is set against a traditional Punjabi family backdrop. Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil is the story of two friends Balraaj Maan (Virendra Saxena) and Lalit Juneja (Deepak Quazir) who live in Ambala and the promise they make to each other….the promise which decides the destiny of their children Heer (Additi Gupta) and Prem.

Commenting on the launch of Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, Anupama Mandloi, Sr. Creative Director, Star Plus, said, "Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil is replacing Kasauti Zindagi Kay which has been a huge success on the channel and it is only apt that a beautifully crafted, passionate love story about an eternal, pre-destined love should take its place. The show is bound to enthrall women of all ages with its colourful characters, its rustic feel and the story of a young man and woman whose journey of love has been decided even before they came into existence. We are very excited with this new offering for the viewers and are confident that they will enjoy this fresh saga of love"

Ekta Kapoor, Creative Director, Balaji Telefilms, further added, "I would only love to describe this as an ethereal story from the heart. This show is bound to ignite the magic of love and romance on television once again. I hope that you enjoy watching it, as much as I have enjoyed making it". Leaving no stone unturned in making the show a grand success, Ekta has consulted noted numerologist Sanjay Jumaani and has asked Additi to add the extra 'D" to her name hoping it will bring good luck to her and the success to the show.

Character Sketches
Prem Juneja
Prem is Lalit and Maya Juneja"s son. He is the pillar of strength for the entire family and is looked upon at the time of any crises. He is an ideal son, brother, husband and a person with a golden heart. Prem has sacrificed his ambitions for his family by entering his family business and proving to be a helping hand for his dad.

For Prem, Maya"s words are the final nail in the coffin and he will do anything to make sure that Maya is happy. Prem is a good looking and a well-spoken man and has a great sense of humour. Prem is a man any girl would want to marry. He is the single thread that binds the entire family together.

Heer Maan (Additi Gupta)
Heer is the daughter of Balraj and Teji Maan. Heer is a lawyer by profession and is actively involved with NGOs. Heer is not a rebellious person but does not hold herself back before fighting for causes that she feels are right. Heer always abides by her parents wishes and can even give up her dreams if they came in the way of her family.

Stay tuned to watch the innocent love story of Prem and Heer in Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, starting March 3rd, Mon-Thursday, 8.30pm, only on Star Plus!

Balaji bares its teeth

Ekta Kapoor is keen that actors of her show look good. Recently she instructed Additi Gupta aka Heer of Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil to straighten her set of teeth

Vickey Lalwani

Additi Gupta

Smile please, Additi. Actually, no. Wait a second. Don't smile. Ekta has instructed the lead girl of her new show, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, Additi Gupta, to straighten her teeth so that she can have a perfect smile. Additi's teeth are a little uneven.

Says a source, "Ekta naturally finds Additi beautiful but she wants her to look better. Hence, she told Additi to get her teeth straightened. Additi's teeth are uneven and crooked."

When contacted, Additi confirms that she has been given such a directive. "I was anyway planning to get this repair job done in the next few days. I am aware that a few of my teeth in the lower front are crooked. If the repair job is done, I will have a much better smile." Additi added that she would be visiting a dental surgeon for the same in the next few days.

Ekta Kapoor

Not so long ago, Ekta consulted numerologist Sanjay B Jumaani to ensure that this show becomes an immediate success. He in turn told Additi to add and extra 'D' to her name. Does D stand for 'dental', Additi?

Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil has replaced Kasautii Zindagi Kay on Star Plus from March 3. The show is set in a traditional Punjabi family. The story revolves around a promise made by two friends and how the consequences of this pact affect the lives of their children. It's certainly affected Additi, but grin and bear it, babes! It's only for the better says Balaji…

Ekta's long title obsession

Being superstitious is good for the producers and directors but only up to some extent. However Ekta Kapoor thinks otherwise. She does not believe in giving short titles to her daily soaps, one of which is her forthcoming Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil, which was earlier titled as Khandaan.   Apparently, Ekta has also asked Aditi Gupta, who plays Heer in the soap to add another D to her first name.  Ekta's numerologist Sanjay Jumaani clarifies, "I have been suggesting the titles for Ekta's shows till now and fortunately it has worked positively for her. As far as the title change is concerned, we decided on Kis Desh… because it gels with the mood of the story where as Khandaan sounded more like any other family drama." Ask him about adding a D to Aditi's name and he says, " An additional D will bring more glory to her."

Additi to shed excess flab

After having added a 'D' to her name, Additi Gupta, who debuts with Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil is obeying all instructions from her director. Ekta is very particular about the way her lead actresses look. That's why she has taken Additi to a very well-known dentist because she wanted Additi's smile to be perfect. "Additi's teeth are overlapped due to which her character was not getting the desired smile. So far she has had two sittings with the dentist," says a source. The actress has even been put on a diet. "Additi is on a diet currently but she is not complaining because she knows that it's for her benefit," adds the source. Talk about muscle power!

Agree or disagree with her, like or dislike her family dramas but it's difficult to ignore Ekta Kapoor and her conviction about what gets eyeballs on television. in her opinion women make exciting stories and men don't. Hence her success formula is very simple — begin a show with a strong female protagonist, add characters as the story progresses, refresh the plotlines with new twists and turns but don't lose focus from the central character and the show will go on and on. Ekta has followed the formula for nearly eight years now and has delivered amazing results. Others also copied her formula and some achieved similar results.

But lately things have changed. The formula seems to be losing its appeal. The days of glory and crackling TRPs are a thing of the past. The super K shows are struggling for decent ratings. As a result Kasauti Zindagi Kay had to be pulled off air and Ekta has come up with another love story to replace the bold and amorous tale of Prerna's passion for men.

"The germ of love and emotions are same but the setting, presentation and characters of Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil are different," says Ekta, adding, "Prerna was bubbly and outgoing but Additi of Kis Desh Mein is demure and protected. Kasauti was a bold and passionate love story but Kis Desh Mein is a younger story about an eternal and predestined love that transcends borders."

Ask Ekta why Kasauti had to be cut short, and she shoots back, "How many love stories have survived beyond two to three years? Kasauti lasted for seven years." Since she believes in not ending her shows till viewers don't say enough is enough, did she take a cue from Kasauti's sliding popularity? And were the low TRPs a result of the show's new generation not making a connect with viewers? "It's not that the generation leap didn't work. Things were fine with the new generation but the older characters (read Prerna, Anurag and Bajaj) were showing signs of fatigue after seven years. I don't think it was possible to continue it any further," she clarifies.

Talking about casting new faces in all her shows, Ekta says today daily soaps require actors to work for 30 days in a month. "Older actors can't go through the rigour of taking that kind of work load. Also, older faces that have done television for a couple of years come with the baggage of an image that can make it difficult for viewers to relate to their new roles. New faces work better because they bring freshness," she reasons.

Draw her attention to falling TRPs of most of her shows or try telling her that none of her shows launched in the past one year have done well and Ekta says she doesn't have the magic wand to deliver good ratings. "My shows have mopped up 15 and 18 TRPs in the past. But I can't repeat such performance again and again. The TRPs of serials depend on the channel's ratings too. If channels don't do well I can't deliver great numbers. Kasturi is not doing badly. Kuchh Is Tara is the number one show on Sony. Karam Apna Apna is the number one show on Star's afternoon band. Kasamh Se is getting decent numbers. My shows on 9X are also doing pretty well vis--vis the channel's viewership. If channels lose their share I can't be blamed for low TRPs," she justifies.

Ask her why the sudden cloud of secrecy and speculation about her mega production Mahabharat for 9X and Ekta evades the query saying, "I will not answer this question." However, she doesn't mind telling which one is her favourite serial. it's neither Kyunki nor Kahani. Not Kasauti either. Well, it's not a Balaji show at all. "My favourite serial is Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand," she says. Her favourite actors? "Ronit Roy and Hiten Tejwani," she replies. And who could be her favourite actresses? She takes a long pause before answering, "Smriti Irani and Prachi Desai."

New Prem kahani 😃

harshad Chopra (of Left Right Left fame) has been chosen to play the male lead in Ekta Kapoor's new show Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil (on Star Plus).

Says Harshad, "Yes, I have been selected for the role of Prem in Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil."

A source from Balaji Telefilms also confirms the news and says, "Yes, we have chosen Harshad to play the male lead in Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil. We felt that he had a lot of potential after seeing his work in Left Right Left."

Harshad who recently quit Amber Dhara refuses to tell us the details of why he left the show so suddenly. When quizzed about him being ousted from Tony and Deeya Singh's Left Right Left, our source says, "He had constant squabbles with the production house. Things got out of control at a point. Finally, he was asked to leave."

Scheme, Dream n Sob

Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil
Monday-Thursday, 8.30pm, Star Plus

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ) meets Pardes in Rang De Basanti land, and that's speaking strictly of the soap's broad references. If one goes by a scene-by-scene break up, more filmy formulas, including same-to-same dialogues will tumble forth. The blatant nature of the lift is indeed quite baffling. For instance, one of the establishing shots of the opening episode had Balaji's favourite patriarch Deepak Quazir (who plays a business honcho Lalit Juneja) don a suit and a hat feeding some pigeons painted in white in some square in 'Caneda' (Mumbaikars however, would immediately identify the location as one from the much filmed Hiranandani Square in Powai) literally mouthing the same lines that Amrish Puri spoke in the opening scene of DDLJ.

Cut to Punjab next, where another patriarch Balraaj Maan (Virendra Saxena of Jassi's dad fame in repeat mode) is wishfully watering a lush field spread over acres, while his daughter, Heer is reprising the Tujhe dekha to yeh jana sanam track in another corner of the field with a dressed-as-SRK-lass to the same strum effect. For more of the Yashraj effect, there's a mom who believes and lectures her lovesick daughter on the 'how and why jodis are made in heaven' (reference Dil To Paagal Hai).

Ok, these are scenes two and three, the first actually was of Siddhivinayak, Balaji, Shivji and all the other Gods of the Hindu pantheon at their respective famed places of worship visualised off a little girl's prayer tray. Not discounting the liberal shots of the Golden Temple, given that one half of the narrative is set in Punjab's Ambala, while the other at the moment revolves around homesick Punjabis in 'Caneda.' But if I am not mistaken, weren't the Golden Temple shots shown as an extension of Ambala? But then if Powai can become Caneda, anything can be anywhere in Ekta Kapoor's la-la land. Time and space have hardly been an issue in her soaps, though nothing still beats the flexibility of age on display.

Anyways coming back to the story, Heer was engaged to Prem (Juneja's son) when they were kids. But then the elder Juneja shifted to Canada with Prem becoming just a name for the Mann family with the passage of time. As regards the bride in waiting, Heer, she, since then has been running around Ambala's yellow fields guessing and singing about the whereabouts of her groom to be (as in Kis desh mein hai mera dil…!).

There are other tragic tracks too like the flashback bit on a runaway girl's story from Heer's childhood who opted for death (or escape) with her lover in a locked thatched hut on fire (a la Om Shanti Om) to escape vengeful relatives. So here's adding, one more to the list of film inspirations. Actually one can watch the soap can have a lively dumb charades or also play a 'Spot the lift' (oops! inspiration) quiz.

That's the latest on the new love story by Balaji that replaces their 'epic' TV saga of seven years Kasautii Zindagi Kay. But certain timings still remain unchanged. If the former had Komolika, the new show's vamp quotient was established on day one itself in Tasneem Sheikh's another nagging-miss act that's a shade better than her ever squirming Mohini-attam in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi. The Balaji creative team does have a soft corner for its vamps with Tasneem's character monopolising the screen presence to ample ammo effect. The rest of the cast, well, in time-honoured Balaji tradition are strictly functional within the limited acting range on offer for an actor in any Balaji show. As regards the males, God save them!

Verdict: For fans of the Balaji kind of story telling here's another edition of the production house's much used (and abused) love story with spanners saga set to ample scheming, screaming and sobbing effects with new faces on a new terrain. A prolonged outdoor (which is quite refreshing at the moment) could be the soap's lone differential, but given the pressure of a daily, it won't be long before this team too reverts back to garish studio indoors.
