Federation Cup Basketball: ONGC, Tamil Nadu basket titles

Bangalore, Feb 3 (IANS) ONGC swept past Indian Overseas Bank 72-46 in the final to annex the men's title in the Federation Cup basketball tournament here Sunday.

Bangalore, Feb 3 (IANS) ONGC swept past Indian Overseas Bank 72-46 in the final to annex the men's title in the Federation Cup basketball tournament here Sunday.

The women's title went to Tamil Nadu who pipped Maharashtra 63-62 in the final that could have gone either way. P. Anitha (22 points) was later adjudged Most Valuable Player, leading Tamil Nadu from the front.

Starring in ONGC's triumph were Vishesh Briguwanshi (18), Trideep Rai (17) and M. Riyazuddin (17) as they built on their commanding half-time lead of 37-16 to emerge deserving winners.

The women's final was closely fought with Tamil Nadu just about managing to nurse their seven-point (38-31) half-time advantage to hold Maharashtra at bay. For the vanquished, Manisha Dange (17) was the top scorer.

Earlier, defending champions Punjab Police avenged their league defeat to overcome Indian Air Force 86-66 to finish third among men while Kerala overcame South-East Central Railway 88-66 for the bronze medal in women's section.

Along with Anita, Briguwanshi was also declared the Most Valuable Player in the men's section as a reward for his consistent performance through the tournament.

Results:

Men (final): ONGC: 72 (Vishesh Briguwanshi 18, Trideep Rai 17, M Riyazuddin 17, Yadwinder Singh 12) beat IOB: 46 (Mihir Pandey 16). HT: 37-16.

Third-place play-off: Punjab Police: 86 (Ranbeer Singh 25, Amritpal Singh 25, Amrinder Singh 12, Harminder Singh 11, Harvinder Singh 9) beat IAF: 66 (Narender Grewal 16, Joginder Singh 12, Shivraj Singh 11, Praveen Kumar 10). HT: 46-37.

Women (final): Tamil Nadu: 63 (P Anitha 22, Raja R Priyadarshini 17,M Adhirai 10) beat Maharashtra: 62 (Manisha Dange 17, Shrin Limaye 14, Radha Krishnan 12). HT: 38-31.

Third-place play-off: Kerala: 88 (PS Jeena 25, PR Surya 23, P Lijimol 22) beat South East Central Railway: 66 (M Pushpa 18, Kavitha 13, Bharti Netam 13). HT: 33-37.

Most valuable player - Men: Vishesh Briguwanshi (ONGC). Women: P Anitha (Tamil Nadu).
