The show aims to encourage every Indian woman to adorn themselves with the magalsutra

Mangalsutra Ek... Maryada, the highest revenue earning serial on Doordarshan in the afternoon slot is to complete 250 episodes on August 22nd. This show aims at encouraging married Indian women to wear the mangalsutra. According to the producer and director of the show Somji R.Shastri, " This show has inspired many women across India to start wearing the mangalsutra all over again'.

Aditya Narayan Pratap played by Kiran Kumar, the protagonist of the show strongly feels that all Indian women should wear this pious sign of marriage. Kiran who plays a judge on the show says, "I like playing a judge for whom the law is above everything. He even sacrifices his family to ensure that justice prevails."

Jayashri Rao who essays the role of Ritika, the ideal Indian woman with the perfect blend of tradition and modernity. She is a sincere IAS Officer who an is a dedicated wife and wears a mangalsutra says, "This serial shows the Indian woman in a powerful avatar- there is nothing that the bharatiya naree can't do."

Interestingly this show has a woman writer Archana S.Shastri who believes that every married woman should wears this piece of jewel. Through her pen she aims at refuting that the mangalsutra is a symbol of chauvinism and is wanting to prove that it is actually about women emancipation.

This is the epitome of absurdity.

Defining the role of a married woman and what she should do and shouldn't do- seems to me that the show is seeped in patriarchal motives!

so what does this show wants to portray - married women who dont flaunt a mangalsutra are bad wives and disloyal to their husbands ?? nonsense !!

mangalsutra is never used in bengal..so bengali women are not loyal...do you want to say that??..i wonder who watch this show??

Exactly. And it's not traditionally worn in the East either. I've never seen my mother, my aunts, my grandmothers, my teachers or my friend's mothers wear the mangalsutra. Look if a woman wants to wear a certain symbol, that's fine- but to actually run a whole show with the single point agenda of making woman wear it- that's rubbish!!!

amazing ... its like you think that they can't get more regressive than what you currently watch ... and then you realize that there is a whole extra level of rubbish out there
