The Buddy Project is the no. 1 show on Channel V. Did you expect the show to do so well?
Definitely yes, because we did a thorough research before working on this concept. The basic brief what we had in our mind was how to make it different and we were successful in terms of the first challenge. It is different from the other shows right now on youth channels. We were expecting the show to do well with multiple casts. We were expecting some good numbers. I feel the journey is long. Being no. 1 just on Channel V is nothing much to celebrate. As a channel, Channel V is in upward trend. Being no. 1 is good and it's a reward for our efforts. The journey is pretty long. The next target is to make the show even bigger and hit that people should start watching it in smaller towns also. That's the next target we have.
What motivated you to come up with a youth show?
Generally we like to make youth shows. Earlier we produced Miley Jab Hum Tum and that was also a no. 1 show and ran for more than two years on Star One and it was hugely successful running for more than 500 episodes. After that we were waiting for the right time and the right platform to start one more youth show. So, no motivation was needed for us. It came very organically to us to make these kind of shows. We also love to make other shows but this is the one thing that we really enjoy.
Are you expecting The Buddy Project to become an iconic TV show like Miley Jab Hum Tum?
I think it is on its way. It can become the same kind of brand. It's up on its way. It's a challenge for to make it memorable because on a GEC, once your characters and story have been established, then you are sorted for 3-4 months, until and unless you do something wrong. Whereas, on a youth channel, there are everyday challenges that one has to face. The audience is so impatient that one loose episode can spoil your next one month's TRP. Every episode has to be really crisp and fast. We need good quality in terms of the story and technical aspect. We need to be on our toes all the time.
Having gained so much popularity, are you looking forward to bring another season of Miley Jab Hum Tum?
First of all, the channel is not there now. I don't actually know, it entirely depends on the broadcaster. If the broadcasters will be okay with it, then we will be happy to bring season 2, we will be more than happy to produce it again and we will be happy to create another memorable journey for Miley Jab Hum Tum season 2.
Would you like to create the same magic with the same cast?
One hundred per cent. I would love to create the magic with the same cast but I can't say much about it as Sanaya Irani is already doing a hit show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? and Rati Pandey is doing Hitler Didi. I don't know how many of them will manage doing so, it might be better for us to go with fresh faces or maybe a combination of both.
What are your plans to bring out the second season of Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha?
We are still working on the story. It should be back in January, the first or second week. We are still having our discussions with the creatives as to how to make it more exciting and interesting for the viewers. People have already loved Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha. It's too early to say anything right now.
Will the audience see Kunal Karan Kapoor and Aakanksha Singh in the second season?
Yes, the main couple Kunal and Akansha will surely be there in the second season and the presence of the rest will depend on the story and track.
What was the reason to bring forth Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha's second season?
There was no particular reason. It will be the first show on this channel which will be coming back as season 2. It will be back with a fresh perspective, fresh approach, and new characters. The main reason was the scheduling reason. This is the reason why we are coming back with season 2.
May we please have a gist of the storyline of what our viewers may see in its second season?
It's too early right now. Even we are not sure about the story line. It will take few more days to take out a broad structure. We are working on it.
How has your team of Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha been supportive in letting the show gain immense popularity?
Each and every person was supportive and concerned. The cast and crew have worked in hard. All have told me even if they have got a break of few months, but whenever we will need them, they will always be available to work for Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha- be it our technicians or the cast. The thread which is binding to all of us including my directors, actors, writers and the crew is very strong. The kind of story and characters we created, it is because of that, that we are so emotionally connected with each other. I have got a huge support from the team. Even the channel was very supportive because when we got to know that the show was going off-air, we were disheartened and the people at the channel were also feeling sad.
You are involved in all departments with your wife Seema in your company Sunshine Productions. Does having your spouse work with you help in business control?
We are used to it as we are doing that for the past 15 years now. We both work as directors. There are certain areas where I look into it and there are certain areas in which Seema is specialized in. We have our dedicated spaces where she takes the charge and there are certain areas where I take the charge.
Do you want to make any reality show?
Before starting fiction programmes, I used to direct non-fiction programmes. I had directed Janta Ki Adaalat which was one of the big shows of 90's. It used to come on Sundays on Star Plus. So, we have that background. Currently we have our main focus on fiction programs but yes, in the coming years we might get into reality shows also.
Are parameters different while making a TV soap for youth and for family audiences?
The parameters are the same but approach is different. When we are making a show for a GEC, then the approach is slightly different. For example, if we talk about the youth shows, it must be fast having less holds. One episode might have 11-12 scenes. On the other hand, in a GEC programme, we always look for a pause. Both are good. The requirement is different and we enjoy both.
Any new projects in mind?
We are working on couple of shows- one for Star
Plus and more are under development. They are going to be family drama
shows.
