While he has been away from the lime light for quite some time now, he is back with a new dance based reality show Bharat ki Shaan - Rum Jhum and talks about it to us...
Tell us about the concept of the show? How different will it be from similar shows already on-air?
Bharat Ki Shaan - Rum Jhum is a unique dance reality show - Indian Dance vs. Non-Indian Dance show which will be aired on DD National. Dance in India comprises of varied Dance styles. As with other aspects of Indian cultures, different forms of dances originated in different parts of India. Non-Indian Dance forms also has a profound impact in India. Therefore, in this dance series, our emphasis is on the illustration of various mesmerizing Indian dance forms and Non-Indian dance forms. The series will showcase immensely talented dancers of India and the nail-biting competition between the two teams. The prominence of Bollywood songs combined with the fascinating blend of Classical, Regional folk and Western beat to it, will keep the enthralling entertainment quotient always on a high.
Who are the other names involved in the show?
Anchoring the show we have the very charismatic and talented
Shveta Salve to keep the audience enganged. To judge and mentor the participants we have a range of excellent judges i.e., Sandeep Soparkar and Sandeep Mahavir; Ball room maestro and world renowned Kathak dancer respectively. As our Guru Shrestha' we have the legendary Dr. Sonal Mansingh (Padma Bhusan & Padma Vibhusan) who's interpretation of dance and knowledge will add value to our show and would also be our biggest strength to learn and follow.
Why is the show coming on DD and not on any other GEC which would have got you more visibility?
We respect all the broadcasters and each one of them has a different advantage but DD has a unique advantage as it has the maximum reach in India, be it from the metropolitan cities to the remotest of the places. We want everyone to be able to watch this unique show. Our audience is not niche but we're making this show for the masses and what better way to reach them than DD.
You have been the pioneer of musical talent based shows like Sa Re Ga, Antakshari, Star Voice of India, etc. What do you feel about the very many shows now on air?
TV has grown from one channel to hundreds of channels, be it from regional to news to music to sports. Hence, the audience's priority has also changed depending upon their varied tastes. So a lot has changed overtime. Various shows have been doing extremely well, however our forte has always been to make a family oriented show and get everyone on one platform; we hope to do so with this show too.
What are your future plans? Any other show in the pipeline for other channels?
We are working on a couple of new and unique shows. And very soon you'll see one of our shows which is very close to my heart' back on air.
