'Adaalat is not an educated show on law' - Ronit Roy

After portraying the powerful role of Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi in Imagine's Bandini, Ronit Roy is now essaying the role of the daring and a different lawyer K D Pathak in Sony TV and Contiloe's new show Adaalat.

Tellybuzz spoke to this vibrant actor about his role and experience in the show as K D Pathak.

What made you choose this character?
The genre was different from what I have done before and the main challenge was to entertain the audience in the role of a lawyer. Normally lawyer is a person who is very boring, costumed in black and white and to make that man an interesting and an entertaining one was a difficult task.

Through this show what are you trying to portray?
We are not trying to portray anything here because this is basically a courtroom drama and is not an educated show on law. This is an entertainment package which shows K D's perspective of life.

The show has been compared to earlier serials like Siddhant which was on Star One and Barrister Vinod etc which did not work very well among the audience. So what is that you think is there in the show that can get the audience glued?
I cannot say about the other shows as I have not seen them. The main elements in this that can capture the audience are the entertainment, the crime and its solution with a humorous touch, in the courtroom which has a suspense related to it. Also law is a very serious subject but we have dealt with it giving a lighter approach to the subject so that people can understand easily the 'what, why and how' aspects of the crime.

What is the research that has gone into the show?
There cannot be much research on the set and the costume because the lead is from a court and the outfit is of a lawyer. But for a character there is always an exterior and an interior phase. So the interior aspect of K D was a difficult to shape up because as a lawyer the manner in which he thinks and views the cases had to be different and we wanted to create a universal appeal for K D.

What type of cases does K D solve in the show?
K D is a lawyer who deals with all kinds of cases because he just believes in delivering justice to all. He now deals with crime cases which are usual but in the later period of time he will deal with cases that are serious like child molestation and euthanasia which are controversial in society.

Are the cases dealt in the show real or fiction?
As I said before, the show is a fiction and hence the cases shown will also be fictional including the characters. But whatever be the case, it will be similar to case in true life in some or the other way. But it is a show that is designed to entertain people, and the cases will be shown taking up the cinematic liberty to fantasize it.

Television today shows a lot of obscenity and vulgarity, so will K D take up such cases?
I agree that there is obscenity shown in different shows on Television, but it is always said that parental guidance is an important factor for a kid to grow. So if any such cases come up to K D in an unavoidable situation, he will take it up.

Is K D modern in his outlook?
K D totally has a modern outlook and is a man of today who lives in 2010. There is nothing non-modern in him apart from some of the character traits that are imbibed from his family, which I believe is inborn in every individual.

Tell us about one such case that K D has solved, and does K D have negative points?
You have to watch the show for the cases K D has solved and regarding the negative points I feel that everyone has one or the other weaknesses in them. In this show K D is very chivalrous but a very shy person and gets conscious when girls get close to him.

How is it working with Contiloe?
It is a superb experience to be associated with a production house like Contiloe and we have a great team which is ready to spend a lot of money in production. The team is really hard working and well organized and managed.

How do you feel portraying K D Pathak after essaying the powerful role of Dharamraj in Bandini?
I felt pretty much the same because both are powerful characters.

How could you differentiate Mahiyavanshi and K D Pathak?
We cannot compare both the roles because both of them are from different walks of life where one is a person from the rural outlook and the other one is a metropolitan lawyer.

As Mahiyavanshi you have given a lot many decisions in Bandini, so what is the one case from Bandini that you will take to K D if given a chance?
KD cannot take other cases because he has his own set of cases to solve in his way.

You have been choosy about your roles, what was the reason?
Yes, I am choosy regarding the roles I do because I am offered a lot of shows but the script and the role have to be different from the others that I have already done.

Will you appear in the next season of Kitchen Champion?
If the channel approaches me then I would definitely like to be a part of the show.

We heard that you were approached to do a reality on Sony on wife swapping, will you accept it?
Yes I was offered to do the show, but I am not doing it.
